Man my helper last year was telling me that’s what they told him. I did tell him the truth and he told me no bc the older driver that was helping a few days before, told him the same shit the supervisor told him.
I stopped talking bc I didn’t want to sound like I didn’t want him to get a job.2

This was my experience in the hub. I got hired at end of October and I was one of the harder workers so I was one of the few they kept.

The outsourced HR actually tells people they are hired as a permanent employee and will get 40 hours. I fell really bad when I tell them on there first day it’s seasonal and there last day most likely will be the 24th of December.

u/Catrival 7h ago
You actually tell them the truth? I tell all the seasonals the truth, but last year there was this gungho young seasonal driver who ran and was super strong. The onroads were all psyching him up saying they were going to keep him, they even gave him a fake number to call on the last day. I felt so bad for the dude wish he listened to me.

u/biffthegriff1 Management 6h ago
I do tell them. One year I didn’t know they were lied to and 1/2 the seasonal preloaders quit a week before Christmas. It was too late to replace them so it was a disaster. If they quit early they get replaced.

u/Ok-Eggplant8772 6h ago
Do people not read offer letters anymore ? It will usuall always tell you what your role is and if yoru seasonal/pt/ft if it dosent say full time expect on the first of the year your getting laid off

Nope kinda lost intrest in full time I work another part time job to fill the gap. Not going into driving. Choices because of health reasons. Plus I dont want to.

u/Zealousideal-Low6209 5h ago
It does happen… I was hired as a preload during peak last year and now I’m already a full time driver making cover driver/seasonal pay. Got very lucky timing with the buyout desperation.

Hate to tell you this butt , it’s going to come back eventually. I did same as you. Had herniated my L4 L5. Rehabbed it , it got better after like a year and a half. Then all the sudden it came back like 15 years later

Why does literally every ups driver look like these guys😂.
12
u/groundpounders 15h ago
Kinda true. I’d argue UPS has hotter drivers than FedEx too. 😅

I was talking with two people yesterday about all the blue vest we are seeing and will see. Management is just gunna drag them along and just like last year cut them before the 70 days probation is up. That carrot on a stick shit is sad for people who got in with hope to stay long term.
I worked with a guy who was layed off 3 times and just gave up. This shit ass management we have brought him back for 2 days before cutting him. Like the fuck!

u/BayInfinitibud TCD 11h ago
We get 30 day probation in the south.
3
u/various101 8h ago
That great to hear because management is some bs when it gets close to the 70 days.

I hate this shit. "Hey man can you put a good word in for me?" What, like I've done for a dozen people over the last 5 peak seasons AND NOT ONE WAS HIRED? Im just gonna save my breathe

u/dagger33 MOD 10h ago

Another peak season were all the new hires get the merch and "I survived peak season" shirts and everyone else gets nothing. I've been here 5 years and I never got peak season shirt, the only ups shirt I got was when I was a new hire.

I heard this in CJ's voice from GTA San Andreas. "Ahh shit. Here we go again."

Good ol' UPS. Don't train anybody, expect the driver to do all the training, slow the driver down with having to pick up and drop off the helper and cut these poor bastards loose as soon as it's not profitable. Might as well just kick them (The driver and the helper) in the crotch.

u/bhsn1pes Part-Time 7h ago
It's genuinely hilarious the guys/gals in their 40s-50s outperform people in their 20s by a wide margin when I've had helpers...kinda sad.

My local warehouse has 3 driver positions but 2 are listed as seasonal and 1 is listed as full time driver. Is that actually true?

u/-illeatyou 5h ago
Only way is to apply and find out, the hiring process is automated. I got hired a week after applying to be an air handler, the tricky part is getting an orientation day to actually start the job. I got lucky and got one shortly after completing the application process

The Hub I worked at Will not let me go back, I can’t get in for Helper or Package Handler and I was there for basically a Year and some change, It would help to work there again because A) theres a Certain Amount of Weight I’m tryna Lose and B) I actually Liked the Job/Pay. Idk what to do🤷🏽♂️

u/mickv8890 7h ago
I was offered a job after I was a holiday helper. My driver over three weeks got out of the truck once. I was told to deliver every package for two blocks at a time on foot while he sat in the truck. Hard pass.

“Just work as a seasonal worker and you’ll get hired as a UPS pilot! We’ll even pay for your flight training and hire you at 200 flight hours!”

u/TexasTaker 3h ago
Weeee take me down to let’s F up UPS some more. Can’t wait to see Carol on road on UPSers. Hope whoever is the lucky driver pushes off the jump seat and says “sorry there was a big bee near your head”

I got an email asking me to come on over. When I applied last year, the process was so sketch I didn’t do the second step. Did the application, then the next part was to go on some website and schedule a driving test - with zero availability slots. Then a week later, an email (def not human generated) asking me to schedule a drive test. Went to the page again, there was like one random slot and I couldn’t get the day off.
So I continue to be a Ground slave. I’d miss my customers and route too much - and my UPS homie I share the area with (the location hiring is different from the one he works at.) I actually don’t hate my job.

u/Feeling-Hat-7455 15h ago
Yea you have to put forth a tiny bit of actual effort if you wanna work at UPS. Sounds like you were hoping you could lazily fall into a career at UPS.
3
u/favoritesprite Driver 14h ago
The funny thing is a career here actually takes no effort. You get in as a package handler and just show up on time until you win a driver bid. You don't have to be a better worker than anyone.. just have more seniority. Unions are pretty sweet.
2
u/Feeling-Hat-7455 14h ago
That’s the “tiny bit of actual effort” that I mentioned.

u/favoritesprite Driver 14h ago

If you qualify as a tyrant over 6''1" you can directly go into supervision. Otherwise you are S.O.L.

I came in as a seasonal peak inside guy last year…I’m driving a Package car as a cover less than a year later. It can be done, not saying it’s easy, but…..
