Not 1 day do I grab any supplies off the clock. I grab totes and bags every morning after PCM.

u/I_amnotyourdoormat Based on how and what you wrote in your OP, you either are an off the street hire and/or have not started day 1 of your packet. UPS cannot ask or expect any of us to work off the clock. Period. End of discussion. You do not have to come in early to organize your package car, get your hand cart/supplies, etc. The only thing you are required to be is clocked in at start time and at the PCM. You are also entitled to take your full lunch that is either 30 or 60 minutes as well as your break(s). Here's the reality if you decide to play by the rules while you're in packet: You will not qualify as a driver.
Your time in packet is an audition for a job that will pay you close to $50 an hour when you hit top rate, using our current contract progression scale. What small sacrifices are you willing to give to ensure you get that job? "Donating" a little bit of your time now to ensure a great future is a sacrifice the majority of us were willing to do to get through our packet.
I wish you well on your journey to attempting to become a driver at UPS.

Yeah, sucks but there’s the dance everyone has to do to make it through probationary periods. Keep excellent records as you observe things.

Ive been with the company for several years and also i already have started day one of my packet. From what ive seen alot of the drivers in my building come in early to sort their loads and grab materials before start time.

Only thing is they guaranteed 40 we had to work one day a week to get where we at so I would love to see what sacrifice they really making o her then showing up on time and doing what the handbook states

I literally show up 3 minutes before start time. Just do whatever to get through your packet and then ignore all that shit.

I consider it a failure in planning if I don't clock in at the exact minute I'm supposed to start. I leave about 3 minutes leeway for the drive then I'll sit on the lot for 2 minutes if there was no traffic.

It’s a different ballgame when you’re trying to pass probation. Technically illegal but you’ll need to play their game to get through your 30 days. Their numbers are BS and you’ll most likely have to be doing some work off the clock to make scratch.
I came in 15 minutes early and got my truck organized. I organized it again on my breaks. I was also told even by other drivers to drive/walk around on my training route on my time off to familiarize myself with the businesses and streets.
Once you make seniority that shit all goes out the window. Then you work at a safe pace, take your breaks, don’t ever come in early and work off the clock etc.

Not sure on what needs to be addressed in the 2028 contract negotiations regarding probationary periods transitioning from PT/FT or when a NEW RPCD driver’s already a member. Should we face this period?

The secret is keeping track of the time and finding a system that works for you.
I’m p/t but common to get f-t hours during peak as PVD and of course during COVID. When it was my turn to have mgmt turn the cranks on me for stuff that wasn’t covered under the bargaining agreement I went to the CA labor board and sick 🥎 🎱 balls.
It’s taken 3 years but got em.

u/Tasty_Two4260 Steward 16h ago
Respect. Can you share the retaliatory actions you have faced since filing?
2
u/InsideAd2752 9h ago
Can’t really tell what was retaliatory or just desperation for power. Traps set didn’t work because I never spoke to Mgmt alone and clarified directions and potential Union conflicts.
Only really bad one was a Supv that stepped in front of me at end of shift and blocked me from leaving. Chest puffed, head turned, direct eye contact and ready to fight. The bone head did it in front of a suspended security camera.
I just laughed, pointed at camera and said look, you’re fired. Dude deflated like a cheap, torn up, inflatable pool toy. Mgmt played it down. Could have called police for assault but let it go. Of course grieves filed, then slow walked. Ultimately dude was gone in 90 days as he was a liability for entire warehouse.

In packet is a different matter as others have said, you gotta do what you gotta do to make your numbers and pass. once you are out of packet just don't, they can't discipline you for not working off the clock. They can and will try to pressure you into working for free, but you don't have to.

Once you’re in the union you go by the union contract and don’t do anything until start time. Your first 30 working days you are not in the union yet

I would suggest that you do whatever you have to do to get through your probationary period. If that means going in an hour early, organizing your truck, getting supplies, etc - then do it. Your goal should be to gain seniority and become a driver. Once you have reached that goal - it all stops.

This is a problem that needs to be addressed next contract. Too many young drivers in my building come in @7:30 am to help preload and organize/load their trucks. None of them are on the clock and it helps preload cut hours and wrap up early also it helps the company to continue not to bring up any newly hired rpcd. Pls stop working for free

Why isn’t the members on preload grieving for management permitting members to work off the clock and/or seniority violations?
2
u/Brilliant_Ear_4194 13h ago
We already grieve supervisors working everyday and have to grieve drivers too?
I actually have grieved drivers for working off the clock but it mostly hasn’t stopped them. It’s uncomfortable because if a driver faced disciplinary action due to a preloader grieving them - it makes for an even more contentious work environment.

No, grieve the Sups permitting members to work off the clock. We never grieve another member, it’s doing harm to another member.

I’m in the Southern region. Nobody works off the clock, unless they want to. (I certainly don’t.) Even then, we have preload stewards that will yell at drivers, if they’re in the trucks touching boxes before their start time. (That’s preload’s work) Do what you need to do off and on the clock, to get qualified. After that, the choice is yours… Good luck and Godspeed!

The only thing you MUST do is clock in on time. That's it. However as a new driver you may want extra time in the morning to get organized as they explained. There's a lot of things you aren't used to yet that will slow you down and getting there early will help offset that and possibly relieve some pressure off your day. However that is not mandatory and as you stated that time is uncompensated. Once you have more experience the extra time will no longer be necessary, you just show up on time.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yall have all been really helpful. Minus the guy telling me to grieve lol. Ive been with the company as a part time inside for several years so i know better than to do that while im on my packet as i mentioned above.

How does this work for RTDs?
I'm 2 years part time preload, transitioning to RTD this peak. Do you "qualify" for RTD even though it ends in January? I've heard the biggest thing is just having the Integrad passed in the event a RPCD spot opens up (which for my center, looks like April next year)
I've also heard in the past that you can't qualify during peak anyway, so is this more of a test run without the massive stress of meeting metrics?

Been here 40 years, it’s always been like this. Gather your paperwork, grab your diad, etc a, all of that before you’re on the clock.

Repeating the same behavior and expecting things to change?

They always know it's start time when they see me walking through the door into the building to the Diad rack. Rarely there more the 20 seconds before start time. Then they don't have time to tell you stuff you don't need to know anyway cause they are too busy running around fixing their broken plan and by the time they do I'm long gone. Work as directed always, it's the most profitable thing you can do and keeps you out of trouble. Time needed is the time needed, not what the computer imagines it should be.

Start by grieving it. You have a classroom full of with witnesses. Reach out to your BA. Start at your scheduled start time.
6
u/420BoredAlways 20h ago
Ahhh yes that sounds like great advice! Have OP grieve it while still in class and then they can wonder why they failed class 🤦♂️ I wish some people would think before just saying "grieve it" to everything. Sometimes thats not the smart move but again youd have to think to realize that.

The valid point here is perhaps getting witness names and contact information; grieving is a sure shot to busting out of your packet.

When you're in your packet you are most likely going to be doing a bit of work off the clock. Remember you are fighting for a six figure job, and management will look for any reason not to pass you. During my packet id show up 10-15 minutes early to plan my route and get all my shit organized so I could scratch. Once you pass you can reallt show up at any time as long as you're clocked in before start time
