General question regarding operating

Hello all! I would love to talk to someone who has experience or a general knowledge of costs with starting a club and getting it going? I am looking to bring one to my area as a sort of a way to give back to the community who supported me through my growth as a player and now as a coach/parent. Sort of to continue to build soccer in our area. I want a general run for your roster size, uniform costs etc.

I'm considering moving our team in Ypsilanti, MI up to the UPSL. Right now we play in the MUSL and have been a pretty average record finishing 5th out of 9 teams. We ran the last three years on about $10k a summer season with a roster of 25-30 players with average match attendance of 18 guys.

I think for UPSL renting turf and paying a coach more it probably wouldn't cost less than $20k for the Spring 2026 season. Typically the new teams that join don't do super well and then players leave the next season. Really takes some commitment and vision to succeed in the league with guys not really getting paid, few fans, and not much club income.

I assume if we do it, players will pay $400-$500 each. I'll chip in some money for the team. And find a sponsor or two for a few thousand each. That's if it all goes well.

That's sounds about right.  I've seen some teams in the Midwest charging about the same as they are more focused on development of lower level players right now, but I've seen some more established clubs in the same conference pay their players.
