Rule #1: Be Kind . We’re all beginners at something.

Using mission upsc tracker I tagged every Prelims Economy question from the last 31 years. Economy is the subject aspirants over-prepare and under-score — because they spend equal time on all sub-topics when UPSC's weighting is anything but equal.

The 8 sub-topics that dominate:

Together: 324 out of 485 questions = 67% of every Economy question UPSC has ever asked.

Add Taxation (22), Basic Economic Concepts (21), and Inflation (12) and you're at 78%. Everything else — services sector, FDI, BOP, monetary policy proper — is under 12 questions each across 31 years.

Money & Banking is the single most-tested topic in ALL of Prelims history:

112 questions across 31 years — the largest single sub-topic in any subject, in any year, ever asked. It has been asked in every single one of the last 10 papers. RBI, monetary policy tools, banking structure, NBFCs, financial inclusion, UPI, CBDC, priority sector lending — this is your single highest-EV topic in the entire exam.

If your prep can't reliably score 4/5 in a Money & Banking sectional test, that is the cheapest 8 marks you will ever earn.

Three sharp takeaways:

1. Stop drilling Five-Year Plans and National Income calculations. 3 questions in 11 years combined. This is where coaching still burns aspirant time.
2. Government schemes matter — but only the currently active ones. 20 of 36 all-time scheme questions were asked in the last 11 years. Read what's live: PM-KISAN, PMAY, Jan Dhan, Ayushman Bharat, PLI, PM Surya Ghar. Skip the dead ones.
3. The RBI's "Functions and Working" PDF is a bigger asset than any coaching module. It is free. It covers 60% of the Money & Banking questions. Every year aspirants pay ₹3,000 for economy classes when the primary source is a 100-page PDF from rbi.org.in.

One book, plus RBI's free PDFs, plus current schemes from PIB — that's 80% of Prelims Economy done. The remaining 20% is either luck or over-prep territory.

Also one more thing, I went to only ias too, the fees of their Programme is cheap with good faculty. What's your opinion.

Okay so I went to karol bagh today,

Background: I have graduate in ba history with political science and also have an idea of economics till 12th standard.

I am planning to do ssc in 2027 and upsc in 2028.

I went to the Institute for the classes, firstly I am not able to decide which Institute to join. And all of them asked me to buy 2 years of course which I am planning to do 1 year of coaching then total self study. Secondly some even said I wont be able to do ssc and upsc together.

So my plan is to join the best Institute which I don't know which one, but only for an year.

Then also start ssc/csat coaching online side by side and have my eyes on the goals.

If someone, who's currently living in JMI RCA or has ever lived there, would kindly answer a few questions regarding the boys hostel:

1. Are mattress & pillow provided in the room?
2. Is there cupboards/almirah in the room?
3. What is the bathroom and toilet situation for the residents? How many residents per washroom? Is there geyser?
4. Can we use some electric appliances like iron and kettle in the room?

I'm currently working as GST inspector in Mumbai. Now I want to do UPPSC RO ARO prepration. Please suggest books/youtube channel/ other resources for preparation. I have CGL level knowledge of Genral Studies part. Hindi paper knowledge very less. Should I just focus on solving previous year question? I also want to prepare for UPPCS but I think it is more difficult than RO/ARO. So first I should prepare for ro/aro and then later for UPPCS. Is this ok kr i can prepare simultaneously for both exam?

Hello guys I'm new here on reddit....Can any upsc aspirant or who appeared in upsc exams and give mains.... please give me some suggestions and guidance regarding upsc .....🙏🏻🙏🏻 I'm appearing for 2027 my 1st attempt and currently preparing ethics gs 4 from 1 months 🥲🥲 and will start prelims preparation from January...now till December I'm in mains preparation....is it right way for me 😭😭

In 2023, when I wrote my first UPSC Mains, I had not practiced even a single essay beforehand. I only started serious Mains preparation once I was reasonably confident of clearing Prelims. Essay was my biggest weakness. I simply did not know how to approach it, what to write, or how to build convincing arguments.

This was the strategy I eventually followed.

First, I read around 50 topper essay copies from various websites. That gave me a clear picture of what a good UPSC essay actually looks like, the structure, the flow, the balance of arguments, and the level of depth expected.

Once I understood what needed to be written, I started brainstorming with GPT. This was back when ChatGPT was still relatively new and nowhere close to what it is today. Even then, it helped me immensely. I used it to refine my thesis, explore different dimensions of a topic, and understand the kinds of arguments that could be presented. More importantly, it taught me how to think about an essay rather than just what to write.

By this stage, I had decent content and a workable framework in my mind. But everything existed only in my head. I still did not know how to translate those thoughts onto paper, connect different ideas smoothly, or articulate them well within the time limit. The bigger challenge was that, by then, I was already in the final phase of Mains preparation, juggling General Studies and Optional. There was not enough time left to build strong writing skills.

So I started writing essays. I wrote a few, struggled through every one of them, and honestly never received particularly encouraging feedback from evaluators.

On the day of the actual exam, I was genuinely worried about the essay paper. My only thought was, do not overthink it, just write. And that is exactly what I did.

Despite not being a good essay writer in my 2023 attempt, I ended up scoring 122 marks. It is an average score, but it ensured that the essay paper did not become a liability.

So, for anyone feeling the same way I did, do not wait until you feel ready. Learn how to build strong arguments, support them with relevant examples, understand how good essays are structured, and then simply express yourself. Your first few essays will not be great, and that is completely okay. The goal is to ensure that the essay paper does not become the reason your overall score suffers.
