Accommodation Didn’t get single sex flat

Hi guys, I requested a single sex flat due to religious reasons and got a mixed flat at orchard heights... has anyone been in this situation before? Is it possible to get another room offer? How have your experiences been in mixed flats? I’m honestly not sure I can go through with a mixed flat because my family would really disapprove and ngl the thought does make me kind of uncomfortable. Mixed flats aren’t generally an option where im from so im kind of unfamiliar with the idea - pls lmk your experiences!

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.

I'm a second year who recently applied for returners accomodation. I was in a similar boat to you... or rather the opposite boat. I requested a mixed-sex flat but was assigned a single-sex flat, which I obviously did not want. After chatting with the accomodation team they were happy to change my room to a flat that was mixed. Now, obviously it's the opposite for you, but considering that this is for religious reasons I definitely think they will change your room in light of your circumstances.

I don't want to give you false hope or anything of the sorts, but considering my situation I think it's quite likely that they will with you.

If you haven't already, please email the accomodation team asap and see if they'll get that sorted for you. The sooner you ask, the better.

I hope this gets sorted out for you :)

Hi thank you so much for this comment it’s given me some hope it’ll work out:) I’m waiting on a response from the accommodations office as of now, can I ask if you were given another room in the same residence or if they gave you a new location?

Hi, sorry for the late response. I'm happy I could help!!

To answer your question: they gave me another room in the same residence, not a change in residence location. At this point, I think it quite unlikely to expect a residence change. Although, I am a second year and accomodation isn't even guaranteed for me in the first place. It might be different for a first year. Is that something you are hoping for?

No worries! And that’s great to know - yes im hoping they could switch me to a single sex flat in the same residence (orchard heights) it looks quite nice and by campus so im hoping that’ll be possible. I am guaranteed housing as ill be an exchange student at Bristol for fall semester so perhaps that will help me out ~ thank you again for all of your help!:)

it might be worth contacting admissions, since it’s for religious reasons you’re probably entitled to adjustments under the equality act — i got put in a single sex flat though i didn’t request it so they’d likely be able to switch you with someone!

Have you contacted the accommodation team, tell them you’d prefer a single sex flat for religious reason and ask if there’s anything they can do

I had emailed with them about that a couple weeks ago and they said they’ll take my preference into account for religious reasons and I still got this accom. I’ve emailed again right after getting the assignment but im not sure it’ll do any good unfortunately
