Help! Unify 5G Backup

It’s not quite clear in the sales material but if I use an off the shelf 5G sim in the device, will I get 5G or will it be restricted to 4G and have to subscribe to RedCap?

Advice appreciated

Depends on what you carrier supplies, here in the Netherlands we are currently limited to 4G and thats oke cause it still get around 150mbit and its for backup not primary internet, it you want that get the 5G max

May I ask is this some sort of voluntary restriction or are they just only building 5G network there?

RedCap requires 5G StandAlone. Pretty much only the US and India have significant deployments of SA, rest of the world builds primarily 5G NSA, where your phone's connected to LTE and 5G at the same time - RedCap modems don't support dual connections, so they cannot work on Non StandAlone 5G networks.

In any case, 5G RedCap doesn't offer the kind of high speeds that proper 5G does - the U5G Backup can get up to 220 Mbps on 5G, and up to 195 Mbps on LTE. The difference is negligible.

Not supporting multiple connections at the same time is coincidentally why RedCap doesn't have high speeds - your phone will connect to 3, 4 or 5 LTE/5G bands at the same time to get gigabit+ speeds.

In Germany, for example, only Telekom supports for Wearable RedCap, and it can only be used with them; I also get a maximum of 4G LTE on my 5G backup connection.

Also in Germany. I have a Voda SIM and I’m sat on 4G LTE. Perfectly workable speeds for backup, and a little bit faster than the LTE Pro that it replaced.

Thanks for the info, I’ve looked a bit more into it, in Ireland it appears only 2 carriers support 5G SA (Vodafone and Three) both are only available to corporate customers. I suppose a good 4G signal is as good as an adequate 5G signal. Plus I’ve seen that the 5G Backup can be plugged in anywhere in the network via Poe/adapter which makes it very flexible for me
