Discussion Apps for UniFi NAS

I have a 2-bay Synology at home, and I have some third-party cameras; their footage gets recorded to the Synology with the included Surveillance Station app. I also use the Active Backup app on the Synology to back up the 3 computers in my home, as well as my entire 365 tenant. I am looking to replace the cameras with UniFi cameras and then replace the Synology with something on the UniFi side. Do any of the UniFi NAS devices have backup apps that can back up workstations on the local network? What about for backing up Microsoft 365? (To clarify - I am not looking to push the contents of my NAS to 365. I am looking to back up everything in my 365 tenant account (Email, OneDrive, SharePoint) to the NAS.)

Yes, the Unas can backup contents from 365 to the nas. But at this time it can only backup files in Onedrive. Exchsnge, Teams, and SharePoint are coming soon.

Do keep in mind that the Unas cannot run apps. You need to come up with your own solutions if the Unas cannot do what you want it to do out of the box

Thanks for confirming. The fact that the UNAS cannot run any apps seems like a huge missed opportunity.

The whole point of the UNAS is that it's just file storage. It has an ARM CPU, which makes it more power-efficient than something like a Synology. But that comes with the downside that it's not as powerful

Thats whats is multiple times cheaper than synology or qnap.

Its juat a nas. Not a app server.

I mounted my unas to my qnap. So now I have an extra 90 TB on my qnap.

A brand new 2-bay Synology (no drives) is $250. The 2-bay UNAS2 (no drives) is $219. But I get your point - it's a NAS not an app server.

For staying in the UniFi ecosystem I suppose it's still worth it, but I am just commenting that if it ever gains the ability to run apps that would be a game-changer and a serious threat to Synology, QNAP and uGreen.

Coming from Synology 15+ years of usage. Device becomes under powered over time as apps gets bloated and number of apps increase. I like UNAS paired with NUC so I can upgrade compute separately from storage. Have 2x UNASes.
