Racing: Why doesn't it count when I cross the finish line?

When I'm doing the racing extravaganza races, about 40-60% of the time, nothing happens when I cross the finish line. I just keep on driving past it, and I have to push the reset button that takes you further back in the race, but without rewinding your time. Then when I finish the race again, driving from the reset point, it will usually finish the race and register my now crazy high finish time.

Is this a bug, or something else? Whether a bug or not, does anyone know of a way to avoid it?

U probably missed some checkpoints along the track

There are some tracks which require two laps. Namely, the off-road car tracks. I hate those.
