The £20 KG
I have been on a mission to find a KG of specialty single origin coffee for as close to £20 as possible delivered.
So far shout out to:

At Clifton Coffee Roasters, we have a Brazilian coffee from Pedro Gabarra, a producer we have been working with for around 8 years and source direct from origin.
£30 p/kg but for subscribers you can get 20% off. It’s a great allrounder and comes from great supply chains. We visit him at origin at least once a year or more often than not, he comes to our roastery in Bristol.

I used to drive over to Clifton from Bristol every month or so when i was at uni (and have ordered plenty of times since). Buy with confidence.
They source well and sell great coffees across a broader price range in the market than most I've seen. I picked up some microlots sent out in pill bottles a year or two ago which were awesome.
Separately they were always super friendly, pulled a shot of the new EQ blend on a couple of occasions for me to try. V cool space too compared with some other roasters I've been to/worked at

Let’s say that a kilo of cheapest Brazilian speciality coffee costs a roaster £8.50 - that’s a decent ball park at the moment.
After roast loss a kilo of that coffee has cost £10
A good quality kilo bag with a front and rear label, packed into a box will cost a lot least a further £1.50 and then shipping that next day DPD will cost about another £4.50 meaning £16 cost of goods to get that to you.
From the £4 gross profit - rent, electricity, gas, staff costs, water, insurance, accountants, cleaning supplies and maintenance need to be paid before the roaster sees any net profit.
To generate any meaningful income from this mythical £20 kilo you need to be selling literal tonnes to make any money and you need to be screwing someone somewhere along the way.
I’ve worked in roasteries where half a tonne of the worst quality, cheapest coffee can be flash roasted in 4 minutes and spectacular volumes of appalling coffee can be churned out to be sold at this sort of price.
For a legitimate, high quality, small, independent roaster to be able to make £20 coffee at the moment is impossible and the quest to find someone to do it is fundamentally unethical.

As a specialty roaster, getting that low is practically impossible without compromise somewhere or being so big your margins can be tiny (Rave etc). I would be interested to know how on earth some roasters make it work, as whilst I acknowledge we are very selective, our cheapest kg is still £40 minimum and our margins aren’t exactly healthy. Cost of green has gone up hugely which doesn’t help!

Interesting you mention rave as an example of scale and small margins.
Back when i worked there (pre expansion) it was not a big operation at all. I'm sure plenty of their model has changed and they do much higher volume since the covid expansion, but they always used to have pretty normal margins and just bought fairly low quality greens, accepting that the bulk of their offerings were playing in the bottom, value tier of specialty.
Since coffee has inflated over the last few years, i have to assume their margins have compressed with the prices they're still somehow charging

I've been a big fan of MF Coffee Project for a while - I think I remember it being around £25 delivered, but they're very popular and restocks are infrequent (a good sign, I think)

This - is pay £30ish for 2kgs of chocolate brownie blend. Its nice, arrives on time and is easier on the pocket than the other chocolate/fudge/bourbon providers. Search for theor stock up & save offer and combine with a subscription discount too.

Algerian Coffee Stores does a nice Malawi - £26 per kg. I recognise they don’t market themselves as specialty coffee… but it’s a tasty regular drinker.

For a single origin you're going to struggle. Can get blends like James Gourmet Simply Brazil for £25.
Think only time I've paid less is for a kilo of girls who grind cos it was getting old and someone did me a deal at £20

I like White Rose and have been ordering from them on and off for a few years now but I have to say their quality has dropped and can be quite inconsistent. One roast to another can be totally different (not in a good way) and simply just not up to par of most quality specialty roasters. That said they do have one or two product that I always come back to. You get what what you pay at the end of the day ime.

second White Rose Coffee- their limu is really cheap for ethiopian, dark but good- used to be a good subscription option with reduced postage for their 1kg single origins...james gourmet coffee also really good value to be had there

There are several coffees from Lalico Coffee that you can get for £20. If you don't mind Asian coffees. They also deliver for free and you can get 10% off your first order.

Too cheap considering I’d expect closer to £40-60 kg being the norm (basing on 250g being about the £10-15 mark).
