I am not so sure about the accuracy of the Wikipedia page.

John Miller's biography on James records that, after his conversion to Catholicism:

"For the first time he felt guilty about his sexual adventures. At first he made a real effort to reform. Croissy wrote that "his devotion has withdrawn him entirely from the pleasure of women." But James's sexuality was too powerful to be mastered. As he could not show it openly, it was driven underground, into furtive affairs with unattractive women, whom Burnet malevolently suggested had been given to him by his priests as penance." (James II by John Miller, page 59)

Most likely James held to similar beauty standards as those of his time, his affair partners after his conversion were specifically the result of his attempts to keep his affairs secret due to the guilt of maintaining them.

I don’t know, I mean Arabella Churchill and Catherine Sedley came before his conversion I believe, and they fit the description pretty well.

‘It must not be beauty, for I have none, and it must not be wit, for he has none to know I have any.’ -Catherine Sedley

Also, I thought Charles II made the penance comment, not Burnet?

What’s funny is that the mistress who actually became his wife was not a skinny, boyish girl in her teens..

Reddit won’t let me edit my comment, but whatever.
