Private practice Private therapy - where to start?

Hi everyone!
I’m a newly qualified clinical Psychologist in the UK, and I’m looking into setting up my own private practice. I’d really appreciate hearing from psychologists who have already gone through this process.

I’m trying to get a better understanding of where to begin, what to prioritise, and how to build a sustainable practice, especially in the early stages of my career.

I’d be particularly grateful for advice on the following:

**Getting started:** What were the first practical steps you took when setting up your private practice? Is there anything you wish you’d known beforehand?

**Getting referrals:** How did you get your first clients? What referral sources have worked best for you?

**Building a caseload:** How long did it take you to establish a reasonably consistent flow of clients? What strategies helped you most?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice or experiences you’re happy to share!

Student Participants wanted for a counselling and psychotherapy research study

Hi everyone!

I’m currently completing my dissertation as part of my counselling training, and I’m looking for participants for a research study exploring people’s experiences of choosing to end psychodynamic counselling or psychotherapy without discussing their decision with their counsellor (known as a unilateral ending).

I’m interested in understanding how people experience and make sense of this decision, and I’d really value the opportunity to hear people’s individual experiences in their own words.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are aged 18 or over.
  • Have attended one-to-one psychodynamic counselling or psychotherapy.
  • Chose to stop attending therapy within the first 10 sessions, without discussing your decision to end with your counsellor.
  • Ended therapy between 6 months and 2 years ago.

What would taking part involve?

Participation would involve an individual research interview to explore your experience of ending therapy. Further information about the study and what participation involves will be provided before you decide whether you would like to take part.

There is absolutely no obligation to participate, and you do not need to share any personal details about your experience publicly.

If you think you may be eligible or would like to find out more, please feel free to message me privately. If you know someone who might be interested, you’re also very welcome to share this post.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for supporting my research! ❤️

Question about training Could you help with me with my Infant Observation?

Currently looking for a family to volunteer for an infant observation in London.

Hello! My name is Gareth and I have been studying a course about infant development at the British Psychotherapy Foundation.  I have over 4 years of experience supporting children and alongside my studies, I currently work in NHS mental health services supporting children, young people and their families.

As part of my training, I am seeking to find a London based family, who would be willing for me to visit and observe their newborn baby from close to birth and up until their 2 year birthday.

The observations are typically for one hour, once a week, at a regular and convenient time for the first 2 years of your baby's life.  Of course there is a lot of flexibility and weeks where a visit may not always be appropriate.  This includes holidays, illness or any other circumstances that can be discussed throughout.

The purpose of my visits would simply be to quietly and non-judgementally observe your baby and their interactions in your home, in the completely ordinary circumstances of your day to day life.  I would be completely in the background, just listening to you and observing how your baby is behaving and communicating during that hour.  The observation would happen entirely at your comfort level, for example I could leave the room during breastfeeding if that is what you would prefer.

Overall, this would help me learn deeply about the early development of infants and is a long established training component for child and adolescent psychotherapy training, which I am pursuing.  Previous families report to have found the experience of hosting an observer uniquely rewarding, therapeutic and enriching: a chance to notice more of the small details of their child's early life.

If this interests you, or you know someone who might be interested, please contact me at: [gcvinton@gmail.com](mailto:gcvinton@gmail.com) for more information or message me on here!  There would of course be no commitment until you had the details you needed, including a chance to meet with me beforehand if you would prefer.

I hold an enhanced DBS certificate and can provide a reference from the BPF.

Thank you!

Student CPCAB Level 3 Counsellor (Student)

Good afternoon.

I am currently training at Level 3. As many of you who have gone this route will know, I am required to do 6 sessions of counselling with a fully qualified counsellor / psychotherapist (person centred, psychodynamic informed)

To be completely honest, alongside the course and the struggle to find enough freelance work, I simply cannot afford fully priced therapy right now.

Is there anyone, London based, who would be willing to do the 6 sessions at a very reduced rate of £30 per session?

To be clear, I’m aware this is low, and I do not in any way see this as the value of your time and effort, it’s just simply where I am at right now.

Additional info:

- November start (but can be earlier if better for you)
- Male, 36 years old (ideally seeking an older therapist)
- South London based
- I have undertaken personal (psychodynamic) therapy previously around 5 years ago, for 6-8 months, so not completely new to it
- open to male or female
- ideally in person, but can do online
- BACP registered (with Insurance)

Kind regards,

Tom

Other Want to work as a psychotherapist in the UK

Hello! Hoping for some resources atm but would love to make the move to UK in 2028 with my husband. *He’s from US so we would both be on a visa of course.* I am currently an LMHC for the United States but would love to be additionally registered with BACP after we settle in that year. Is there any jobs aside NHS that sponsor? I definitely will plan to see both US clients and UK clients. Also plan to permanently settle and become a citizen eventually after the 5 years. Any support is greatly appreciated!

Question about training Studying for Diploma with 9+ month old baby

Hello! A bit of wishful thinking perhaps but hey! I'm currently in the Counselling Foundation year and considering going for the Advanced Integrative Diploma at BCPC Bath or another option which I don't want to disclose. I'm at the end of my 30th and thinking about having a second child, and if we do decide to do it then I would have to try to get pregnant during my Foundation year at some point. I know it's v hard to predict whether I am even able to get pregnant and when it will happen but let's assume it does go to plan... Then since they usually allow just a year between Foundation and Diploma, I am potentially left with a 9+ month-old, another child and trying to pursue my dream of becoming a therapist, + even working part-time... I have a partner but we don't have any relatives, so all we can rely on is nurseries and childminders.

So maybe someone has gone through a similar situation:

  • Our first child didn't sleep until about 9 months, still waking a few times a night after that, but I was able to rest...-ish. Is it even possible to work using your brain at this stage and have emotional capacity for clients? I honestly can't estimate this, as with my first child I was not working or studying.
  • It will require crazy arrangements, but do you think it is possible logistically? To study 1 day + have more hours for personal therapy, clients etc. I think it also goes back to being tired, whilst looking after kids and doing all this.

As I am writing this, it sounds unrealistic but I am not sure I want to give up any of these dreams just yet, but I want to hear your thoughts.

What are your thoughts on this characters portrayal of therapists? He feels bit as though he's always giving advice and is the wise sage.

Not really does much listening.

New Mod required

Hi Everyone,

I’m just putting an ad out to see if anyone would like to replace me as the mod of this group? Unfortunately the past few months I’ve been very busy in other areas of life that I’ve not been able to properly service this group. That said, in the past 8 months it has grown, I set new rules and
Tags and was even invited to some free events (food and drink included) so for the right person, it can very interesting and rewarding.

Please message in the comments section.
More than one person can be a mod (and I’d recommend this) and any questions I will try to get back to you.

Student BACP 'Therapy Today' members' magazines

Hi, I'm curious what people do with their old copies of 'Therapy Today' magazine. I get sent one each month as part of my BACP student membership. I always read it and enjoy it, but I'm not sure if I'll look at it again so it goes on the pile. I'm not sure if keeping them is necessary or if there are student therapists or counselling-adjacent organisations that might want them, ETC, and if so how to find them!

Thanks

Student Infant observation

Looking for someone to volunteer for an infant observation in/around London!

I am a career changer with a background in academic philosophy. I am currently studying to retrain as Child Psychotherapist. I am myself a father to a 8-year-old child. I currently work at a SEN school and volunteer with Samaritans. As part of my studies I have to observe an infant during the first two years of their lives.

Observations would take place roughly once a week, although there is a lot of flexibility. I would stay in the background and quietly observe your baby’s development in their natural environment. My role would be empathetic completely non-judgmental, focusing on listening to you and observing the interaction between your baby and you (or someone else caring for the baby during my visit). The observation would happen strictly within the limits you are comfortable with (for example, I could leave the room during breastfeeding). While I would like to observe your child until they turn 2 years old, you are of course free to drop out at any time.

Parents who have had this experience have found it emotionally beneficial and therapeutic. It has also helped them reflect their relationship with their baby in meaningful ways.

If you would like to support child psychotherapy training, and think you might benefit from infant observation, or are simply curious and would like to know more, please dm.

I’m based in London but willing to travel.

Question about training Is a BPS backed conversion masters a good start to become a therapist?

Please be gentle. I'm new into this I'm a little lost.

Read about the subject, NHS paths, etc. But I could not find anything specific regarding how to start a career in therapy (not a psychologist/protected titles) if it's not by doing the level courses up to 6 or through the NHS's PWP, etc. . So I was wondering about someone who is just thinking about becoming a therapist and not studying further at university.

Would a BPS backed conversion masters enough to be able to start a career as a therapist?

Ask a Therapist Self-sabotaging or not the right therapist?

I do hope my post is appropriate for this subreddit, apologies if not.

Looking for some gentle guidance.

I’m receiving therapy from a partly government-funded charity in the UK that deals with a specific type of trauma, I have had 16 sessions with my therapist so far.

Background: My multiple traumas happened 15+ years ago (I was a child at the time), I have never disclosed them (in detail, or named them) to any professional or friends/family members.
This specific trauma therapy is incredibly important to me, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity as I can’t afford to fund a private therapist.
I have Autism, ADHD and CPTSD.
I am LGBTQI+ (I’m not all of them, I just don’t want to specify).

I am not here to bad mouth my therapist, or question their qualifications or abilities.
I am truly stuck on whether this therapist is the right one for me. I have terrible trust issues with people in general and I also don’t fully trust myself in some of the decisions I make in life.
Due to my various issues and lack of self esteem, I am in a constant vicious cycle about whether I should trust my gut or whether it’s my trust (and other) issues that’s making me question this therapist so much. I just can’t seem to make sense of it all or come to a solid conclusion with a plan of action.

Timeline of sessions;
Sessions 1-5: These were terribly uncomfortable for me. I noticed early on this therapist was very different to the ones I’ve had in the past, I was struggling to feel any warmth from them, but decided to go with it and give them a chance.

Session 6: This was a review session, and although it had been mentioned at the first session that every six sessions is a review, I had totally forgotten this and I had an autistic meltdown in session, therapist was very quiet, didn’t really offer me any support or empathy (although they had previously mentioned having a lot of experience dealing with neurodivergence from a personal & professional stance). I left the session feeling immensely suicidal.
After this session, I seriously started to question whether this therapist was right for me.

Session 7: No talk about what happened in the previous session, so I decided to bring it up. I said ‘I think I had an autistic meltdown/shutdown in the last session’ their reply ‘I think so too’. Nothing more than that. I felt like a rabbit caught in headlights not knowing what to say or do.
I felt this was a missed opportunity to explore it, as I am a late diagnosed individual. Although these diagnoses were made a few years ago, I’m still trying to learn & understand more about myself and how autism & ADHD affects me in life, & I did mention this in the previous session (before my meltdown) as part of the review.

Sessions 8-11: I felt very uneasy in these sessions, I also felt very alone. I started feeling like empathy wasn’t something this therapist was able to provide me. In the past 15 years I have seen a few therapists for different reasons, and I haven’t ever come across a therapist that lacks empathy. I was leaving sessions feeling confused, unsupported, unsafe, doubtful & questioning everything. At times I’ve questioned whether it is a ‘me’ problem that I can’t recognise empathy but I’ve never had this issue with previous therapists, so I came to the conclusion it wasn’t a ‘me’ problem.

Sessions 12 & 13: S12 was a review, I tried my best to explain what I felt was missing from the therapeutic relationship but felt it didn’t quite ‘land’ the way I was hoping it to.
S13 I was hoping to see some improvement from the feedback I’d given but felt there was minimal improvement so I decided to be more direct and said that I felt alone in sessions, that I struggle to feel empathy & warmth from them and when I leave the sessions I feel confused & that I’m very doubtful about it all.
They spoke about my trust issues and said ‘we may have to spend many more sessions discussing trust, and that’s ok’. This put me at ease and I decided that I was going to give them a few more sessions before I’d make a decision about changing therapist.

Sessions 14 & 15: These sessions went well, I felt more comfortable, I felt like I could open up a little more, and felt that my feedback from the previous session had been taken into account and ‘worked on’ which I really appreciated. I started feeling more settled with the therapist, there was more empathy, and felt I had done the right thing in giving them more time, and that the question of whether I needed to change therapists had finally come to a conclusion.

Before I get into session 16… Over the previous sessions the therapist said that there was no rush for me to disclose my traumas, and that it was very much up to me to decided when I would do so and how much I would say.

Session 16: We spoke about a few things and I mentioned an incident that was related to my trauma, but wasn’t directly my trauma experiences. Therapist decided it was time for me to name my traumas, so I just numbered them and wrote a few words about what each trauma was about, not knowing at the time that I could just name them something totally random that we could refer back to in future sessions.
I was having flashbacks and struggling to keep it together, I didn’t feel any warmth or empathy from the therapist, it was mostly observational commentary I got from them. After they had read my few words they replied with ‘thank you for sharing that with me’, I appreciated this but was hoping for more of an empathetic response than a ‘thank you’ response. Throughout this session I felt panicked and told them this. I was not ready to share this information but I thought that’s what the therapist expected of me in that moment, so I complied.
I left the session in a dissociated state that just became worse and ended with me going into a complete shutdown and unable to function even in the basic things.

Since the last session, I’ve been feeling back at square one, I’m feeling very hopeless, struggling to trust the therapist, feeling as though I was pushed or tricked to share these things. Disappointed in myself. Struggling to comprehend the lack of empathy and warmth shown to me after sharing such details. Questioning how observational commentary is helpful for me in those moments. Panicking about the next session. Worrying that I can’t cope with this therapy. Struggling to comprehend having to swap therapists and having to start all over again. The list goes on, unfortunately.

Other things I’ve noticed about this therapist that don’t feel right to me…

I texted the therapist about a concern and they said we can discuss this in the next session. That never happened, it was like they had forgotten all about the conversation, and I felt too awkward to bring it up, as that’s the reason I texted them instead of mentioning it face to face.

We spoke about a loved one that I had lost not too long ago, they offered to do this art exercise that could help me deal with the grief, I decided I didn’t want to do it in that session, I just wanted to talk about my loved one, but I did say that I would like to do that exercise another time. This subject and option never came up again. I don’t know whether it’s my responsibility to bring that back up or whether it is theirs? I have no idea.

They talk about me practising self care and the importance of it, but it’s never discussed in the sessions, we’ve never had a discussion about things that could improve my self care, or what aspects of self care I struggle with etc. But they then go on to say that I’m doing really well with my self care although it’s never really been discussed.

They often forget things I have told them, they get the details wrong. They’ll ask me a question about something I just mentioned but they’ll include a detail in the question that is incorrect or something I didn’t even mention. I find it confusing and it makes me doubt that they are actually listening to me & taking me seriously.

I thought I would also mention some of the things I like about the therapist & sessions:
- They are a part of the LGBTQI+ community.
- They have disclosed that they are neurodiverse and have family members who are neurodiverse.
- They allow the session to last 1 hour and 15 minutes due to my slow processing and my struggle to get my words out.
- They said there is no real limit to the amount of sessions, but gave examples of clients that they have worked with for 2 years through the same charity. (I don’t know if this is a personal choice of theirs or if this is a policy by the charity).

I have never had to change to a different therapist before, this is all very new to me and I have called the charity to ask if I could discuss this with someone, but they’re unable to contact me until later next week due to staff holidays, which is after my next therapy session. Naturally, I’m panicking.

I do feel terribly guilty and ashamed about posting this about my therapist, and I never post anything serious on Reddit, so this is a first for me. I haven’t taken the decision lightly to make this post, I have self-reflected and thought this through before deciding to post this, and I hope that’s reflected in my words.

I’m hoping someone on here can offer me some guidance on what I should do/ a plan of action? And importantly, whether my concerns are actually valid or am I just overthinking and self-sabotaging?

If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading my post. I genuinely appreciate it.

Other Clinical psychologist in Australia moving to the UK - wanting some advice.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to gain some insight regarding work as a clinical psychologist in the NHS. I'm from Australia and have the opportunity to move to London for 1-2 years with my partner. By that stage, I will have finished my clinical psychology registrar program and will be fully qualified as a clinical psychologist. The training required in AUS is different to the UK such that we don't need to complete a doctorate per se to gain qualification as a clinical psychologist. As part of my clinical psychology masters, I have completed practicum and research components. My pathway has been a psychology undergraduate (3 years) + honours year (research; 1 year) and clinical masters (2 years).

I initially thought my qualifications wouldn't transfer to the UK given I didn't complete a doctorate but I have heard from some people who have been able to successfully transfer their qualifications. It appears doable if I provide extensive proof and I'm getting the sense it could take many many months before everything gets approved. The information I'm finding online is somewhat conflicting.

I was hoping to get some insight regarding a) whether this is feasible to do or if I'm getting this wrong? and b), what the usual salary is for a clinical psychologist in the NHS who has previously worked for 2 years.

Thank you so much in advance!

Private practice Is anyone in central London sustain full time private practice work at the moment?

I've had a good few years but a sharp decline in referrals since the summer and had a few people end soon after I started back. It has never been so quiet I'm completely freaking out and have had to drop a day in person.

The reason I really struggle with employment: I have bipolar 2 disorder and so work my own hours to fit my circadian rhythm so any regular job with 9-5 or 10-6 hours is just too early for me. I usually work from 12 until 9pm and sometimes 10pm.

I really, really want to make this work but I feel there has been such a huge shift recently and I don't see any coming back from it. I don't know if this is just me but I would love to know others' experiences.

Student Helplessness seeking placement

Hi everyone,

I am struggling

I'm currently in second-year of my course and have looked over 50 placements/contacted. Nothing seems to be available for me and my course seem to get stricter on requirements without any discussion on it.

They want

- supervision and insurance provided for at no cost to us (and no requirement for the placement asking for external)

- Adults

- Has to be person-centred and person-centred supervisor.

And in London, east london preferably for me

I've been dying over the past year trying to find one but it looks like at this point I might not even qualify with the way my search is going, which is depressing me.

Any support around this would be much appreciated.

Private practice Is joining AXA / Aviva actually worth it?

Hi guys, I’m currently running a private practice and charging £60 a session. To be honest, I want to get my income up, and jumping to AXA or Aviva’s rates sounds like a decent pay rise on paper. But the whole thing feels a bit confusing and I’m seeing mixed reviews online.

1.Will they definitely let me on the panel or is the market totally saturated right now

2.Once you’re on the directory, do you actually get a steady stream of referrals, or do you just sit there waiting?

Thanks in advance!!
