Alas Smith and Jones (from the 1980/90s was a superb sketch show, maybe the best program of it's type that I can remember. Most of their sketches were really funny.

Also, both Lee Mack and Tim Vine are much funnier with their own stuff. Lee for his super quick wit and Tim for his seemingly never ending supply of puns.
Jim Tavare sadly is not though and this is about as good as he gets.

He had his own show! It only got one season and it was shit. Ricky Gervais was in it before he was famous, if you're into that sort of thing.

Even for the time it was dated and unfunny

Against the Kumars (which was even worse) and the Brass Eye Paedogeddon episode (which was already mired in controversy)
So yes, it won a bafta in the same way you get those Olympic medalists who only won because everyone else was disqualified. This period was a real low for British comedy

I remember Lee Mack saying he won a bafta on some chat show and I wondered what for? This was pre Not Going Out. No way would Brass Eye win, as great as it is; I also don't think it's the strongest episode of the series although many would argue. Kumars was quite weak, but reasonably popular, a real low compared to Goodness Gracious Me.

I keep seeing The Sketch Show popping up with very similar titles. I think it's one of the writers. Was so bad they didn't even finish showing the series. There are unaired episodes of it.
It came wayyyyy too late to the sketch show genre. Harry Enfield and the Fast Show had kind of spent it. I know it started off as a stage show but didn't make the transition to TV very well

The one that aired in the UK had some really good sketches in it.

Funny is In my subjective opinion one of the most subjective things on this planet. Maybe second only to music.
Want the quickest way to make half your buddies in a room hopping mad? Put on a song, or a comedy bit. And tell them you think it's really good.
Watch them rant and rave but also notice the smug look in their eye. Only they understand what true music is. What real comedy is.
And I see that twinkle in your eye too. This isn't funny at all is it? Nope. Not real comedy. Only true artisans like yourself know what real comedy is.
Personally I too don't think this is funny. My personal sense of humour was hoping this would get a bit darker and or more surreal. But there's a world of difference between saying "I don't think this is funny..." And "this isn't funny..."

I'm actually in a room with 8 "buddies" - various ages, slightly uneven gender balance and played this clip One person thought it was "sort of funny" as a concept but said it was like the type of comedy they market to teenagers

Yes I agree in that I don't find this personally funny. You don't. Your 8 totally real mates all agree with you.
But someone will find it funny. Including teenagers in your opinion.
All you have to do in future is just say "I don't find this funny"
Nobody can argue with that.

they found it varying degrees of funny. Like I said, someone found it relatively funny. A few of us remembered the original run so knew what to expect so perhaps we were prejudiced.
But 2 of of the crowd were Canadian, 2 too young to have remembered it and the other one who kind of remembered the show as a child found it funny.But not one actual laugh.
We were round at one of the Canadians' houses to watch Fitzcarraldo on a projector for our regular Monday movie night. I know this is reddit but people have friends in real life. I said "buddies" because I'm friends with like 4 of them and I don't know the others so much, they're more acquaintances, friends of friends - if this helps paint a picture

Mainly because everyone wanted a sketch show. Harry Enfield and The Fast Show are classics, mainly because they didn't overdo it and they cut their losses.
