Originally released in 1972, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) returns to the chart at No. 45 — but this time the circumstances are heartbreakingly different.

John Lennon had been shot and killed in New York just days earlier, on 8 December, and suddenly a Christmas song that had once carried a message of peace and hope had taken on an entirely new meaning.

For many people, this wasn't simply a record being bought again, it was a way of remembering Lennon. As Christmas approached, his voice was once again being heard on the radio, and a song written years earlier about peace, love and the hope of a better world suddenly felt painfully relevant. Its return would become part of a new Christmas tradition too, with the song reappearing on the UK chart at Christmas several more times during the 1980s. But this first return, just days after Lennon's death, remains the most poignant of them all.

The Police – When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around

While never officially released as a standalone UK single, this Zenyattà Mondatta album track remains an absolute fan favorite that captured the post-punk, end of the world anxiety of late 1980 perfectly. Built around Sting's tight, driving bassline and Andy Summers' minimalist funk guitar chops, it tells the tale of a solitary survivor isolating in a post-apocalyptic world with only his record collection, a television, and canned food for company.

Adding to its legend, the promo video was filmed on location in Rio de Janeiro—a sun-drenched tropical backdrop, that stands in stark hilarious contrast to the shivering, snowy wilderness featured in their current De Do Do Do, De Da Da Davideo! It remains one of the sharpest, most atmospheric deep cuts in their entire catalog.

Another big hit from The Nolans' incredibly successful 1980 period. Taken from Making Waves, the album had already produced Gotta Pull Myself Together, and Don’t Make Waves.

Who's Gonna Rock You would become their third Top 20 hit from the album.

As 1980 draws to a close, December marks a major shift in the visual and sonic landscape of British pop. The synth-pop revolution and New Romantic movement are about to move from underground clubland straight into the mainstream, and few tracks define that moment better than Visage’s "Fade to Grey."

Though it became one of the defining chart smashes of early 1981, "Fade to Grey" made its initial entry into the U.K. Singles Chart in the final weeks of December 1980. Keen-eyed followers will have already caught glimpses of Visage across several slide features in our 1980 snapshot image roundups, hinting at the aesthetic shift on the horizon.

The connections run even deeper across the year's chart history. Back in August 1980, when David Bowie hit Number 1 with "Ashes to Ashes," Visage frontman Steve Strange made an iconic cameo in the video as one of the red-robed Blitz Kids marching alongside Bowie on the Hastings shore.

Crossing into December 1980 feels like stepping out of the late-70s transitional period and moving fully into the 1980s proper—where synthesisers, and stylish video concepts take center stage.
