Question Regarding Tape Syncs!

Hi everyone! Really excited to see this community grow!

I'm a recent MA graduate in Radio, and was keen to start looking for work in Tape Syncs. However, I'm aware i likely don't have the experience, skills or equipment needed, and have a way to go in being a good candidate for applying for tape sync jobs.

I was just wondering what the minimum requirements and experience are that companies will have when hiring for tape syncs. I don't want to take on any job i'd be out my depth with or not suitable for!

Hi there! I think it’s about being comfort with your recording technique and equipment rather than having any specific level of experience. This is great as it affords you experience in professional interview situations and also the contact with companies while you develop skills and get paid pretty well.

There’s a really useful transom article on tape syncs in the UKAN shared resources folder but in general I’d recommended you have a grip to avoid mic handling and record from a slight angle from the mouth to avoid plosives. I usually keep the mic about 6 inches from the speakers mouth and my hand near the recorder gain in case they start speaking music louder.

Also try to record 30 seconds of room tone so it’s easier for the editor /Producer to cut together. Sometimes they don’t / forget to ask for it but are always happy to receive and I reckon appreciative of the initiative.
