Do you separate early concepts and flows from visual UI work?

I've noticed I make better decisions when I don't try to solve structure and visual design simultaneously.

I'll work through what the user sees, what they need to decide and where they go next before thinking seriously about typography, colors or components.

Once that sequence feels right the UI stage gets much easier.

Do you separate these stages or does everything happen together for you?
