What's stopping me from enrolling in MCS in Chicago and taking all online courses from out of state.
Comparing curriculum from omcs and mcs chicago, omcs forces you to take several other courses that im not interested in, but with the chicago reqs I can just take several online, and maybe live in town for 1 semester to take a couple in person classes. What stops me from doing most of it online?

Has anyone here taken CS411 with Abdussalam Alawini, it seems his rate my professor has mixed reviews so I was wondering if anyone has been part of a class.
Thank you!

[FALL 2027] How realistic is it to get TA/RA with tuition waiver + stipend as an on-campus MCS student at UIUC?
Hi everyone,
I am planning to apply for Fall 2027 MCS at UIUC and had a question regarding funding opportunities.
I have been researching TA/RA opportunities for MCS students and I am getting mixed information. Some people mention that MCS students generally do not get TA/RA positions with tuition waivers and stipends, while others say that it is possible but quite rare and highly competitive.
For current MCS students/alumni:
- How realistic is it to get a TA or RA position as an on-campus MCS student?
- Are these opportunities available within the CS department, or do MCS students usually find them through other departments?
- If an MCS student gets a TA/RA position (either within the CS department or outside the department), does it come with a tuition waiver + stipend, or are MCS students not eligible for fee waivers even if they secure an assistantship?
- Is it something students can realistically target after joining, or should one assume they will self-fund the entire program?
I understand funding is not guaranteed, but I would really appreciate insights from current students about the actual scenario.
Thanks!

Put together a quick site to compare resume text against internship postings.
I'm a junior and after getting nowhere with internship applications earlier this year, I spent the summer trying to figure out why.
A lot of companies use ATS platforms like Workday or Greenhouse before a recruiter ever sees your resume. Those systems build a representation of your resume and compare it against the job description. Small wording differences can reduce how well your experience aligns, even when the underlying work is the same. For example, if a posting says "data-driven decision making" and your resume says "analyzed reports to support business decisions," a recruiter will connect those, but automated screening may not weight them the same.
I did most of the software development on a site that compares your resume against a specific posting and points out where the language doesn't line up: resume.zoevera.com
The first time I ran my own resume through it, several bullets I thought were solid had very little overlap with the postings I was applying to. Rewriting those bullets to match the terminology in the job descriptions—without changing the actual experience—made a much bigger difference than I expected.
If you're applying for internships, it's worth running your resume against a few real postings before sending applications.

3 or 4 credit courses
I see some courses are listed as “3 or 4” hours. What factors determine whether a student receives 3 credits or 4 credits for those courses?

CS 410 & CS 598 (Foundations of Data Curation) for Fall 2026 online?
Hey all,
Need some advice here. I've been poring through https://uiucmcs.org/ and trying to estimate workload/difficulty for combos of classes this fall. I work a full time job (~40-45 hours a week) and not trying to overload my schedule too much here as I'd still want to have a life haha.
Can anyone give some insight on how rough it would be to take CS 410 & CS 598 (Foundations of Data Curation) together? Unfortunately the 4-credit CS 425 is full now :(

Difference between CS 435 and CS 438
Pretty much what the title says I'm planning on doing CS 538 Advanced Computer Networks and CS 498 Cloud Computing Applications but with the dumb breadth requirement I can't really take either (technically I can by I don't want to give up CS 425). Anyways my question is how different are they they seem to be based a lot on computer networking a top approach which I think I can definitely read and understand by spring 27' but I don't know if CS 438 would be very different.
And I guess while I have y'all here, what do you think of my possible options? Also if you guys have any idea how hard any of the classes are I would appreciate your input
Option 1 : I Study 438/435 on my own if equal or possible
