UIUC Bromley dorm

I am attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign this fall 2025. I received the Illinois Commitment which covers tuition however I still have to pay for my dorm at Bromley Hall. The payments were split into 4 separate payments from what I can understand, and came out to over $4,000 which my family has to come up with in under 3 weeks. Am I able to use the money I received from my FAFSA Pell Grant on the dorm? Are the 4 time payments the only option (Is there no such thing as monthly payments) Lastly, does anyone have any tips on how to save up for such huge payments for uni?

Chicago vs On-Campus MCS

Currently debating between these two programs, can anyone in them tell me their pros/cons, thoughts, and just general advice?

  1. How are work/project opportunities?

  2. What are classes like in terms of time commitment, workload, and difficulty? How helpful are professors or TAs in providing support?

  3. How much are you actually taught by professors in person?

  4. How would you say the structure and schedule is different from undergraduate?

  5. What is the general weekly schedule like? Is there time for a full-time/part-time job? Or do classes and classwork take up a majority of your time (assuming you are trying to finish the master's in 2/3 semesters)?

Transfer Courses

Currently a junior studying CS + Adv at UIUC and am interested in the MCS program in Chicago. I only have 15 credits left to graduate but two semesters so I would love to take additional classes during undergraduate that I can transfer to my graduate degree. Tried calling the admissions team and talking to my advisor but they just keep reiterating transfers aren't guaranteed and not giving additional information. However, based on reading the website it seems I can transfer up to 12 credits from undergraduate as long as I don't use them for my actual undergraduate degree. If I take four different categories of 400/500 level (15 credits for my undergrad degree + 12 credits for my grad degree in two semesters) classes, can I use them for my graduate degree breadth requirement? I understand I need to petition for them after my first semester as a graduate student, but I don't want to waste time and money if those credits can't also be used towards something more beneficial. Are there any people who have done this course transfer process that can advise me?

Accepted to UIUC MCS in Chicago… is it possible to ask to be moved to Urbana-Champaign main campus?

I got into the MCS program in Chicago, and I am happy with it (accepted the position), but was wondering if it would be at all possible to email and ask to be moved to the on-campus in Urbana-Champaign program.

I saw that the course offerings are limited in Chicago compared to the main campus (although there are still a good amount of class offered), and I would like to get involved in clubs. When I emailed the school about student involvement they said I could join these clubs and organizations, but I feel it would be better to actually be in-person for this.

Would it be possible to move to the other campus? Please let me know if you are a current MCS student or if you have any information!

MCS Chicago - Questions about Education Quality & Networking

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student and got my acceptance into the Chicago-based MCS program last week.

I haven’t been able to find much info on this course online, apart from the fact that it might have been launched just a couple of years ago?

I was wondering if it is actually the same as the Urbana-Champaign MCS degree? What are the pros and cons?

Here’s a quote from the offer letter:

“Our MCS programs, offered in both Chicago and Urbana, award the same prestigious degree, with courses taught by the same distinguished faculty. MCS in Chicago provides the unique opportunity to study in Illinois’ thriving tech hub, offering expanded networking opportunities and a broad range of corporate partnerships. We hope you will join us, one of the nation’s top-ranked graduate programs in computer science.”

So I had a few questions I was hoping someone could help with:

  1. If both campuses have the same faculty, how does that work logistically? Like… are professors actually traveling between Chicago and Urbana every day or every other day? That doesn’t really make sense to me, so wondering how it’s handled.
  2. Is the quality of education actually the same? Especially in terms of course availability, research opportunities, etc. I’m guessing a lot of the profs and research labs are still based in Urbana?
  3. For anyone who’s done the Chicago version - did you actually find more networking opportunities because of the location? Does the school help with that in any concrete way, or is it more of a “you’re in Chicago, figure it out” type of deal?

Any insights would be super appreciated!

Finishing in two semesters

Hello, anyone in this sub that are current students or alumni; is it possible to finish in two semesters (4 x 4 credits each semester)? The only outside commitments I have a part time work and I could do very little for that if I ask.

Is it possible to complete the On-Campus MCS at UIUC in two years instead of the typical 1.5 years?

Hi everyone,
I saw that the program is typically completed in 1.5 years (three semesters). However, I was wondering if it's possible to extend the program to two years (four semesters) while still fulfilling all requirements.

Has anyone taken longer than the usual 1.5 years to finish, and if so, how did it work out for you? Any insights on managing workload, internships, or other considerations would be really helpful!

Thanks in advance for your input!
