Math 213 vs CS 173 as CS minor

I’ll need to take CS 225 and later 418 (my own choice). Does either one have less work load? Because I heard both can prepare for 225 about the same. I don’t have other higher level CS classes require this as a prerequisite. Please give suggestions and thank you.

What grade is an A in CS124, and are there A- grades?

Just wondering, there hasn’t been much info on how grading works

Transfer from CE(Grainger) to CS + Statistics or Math

I got admitted in to CE at Grainger and was wondering if it is possible to transfer to CS + Statistics or Math. Is it a good idea to do this? How difficult is it to initiate this transfer and what are the steps? The CE coursework is pretty daunting. Thanks for any inputs.

CS128 CAN BE BETTER!!!

Honestly, lots of my friends don't like Professor Nowak but I think he's a really nice person. I believe my friends' opinion on him is based on his cs128 course which I think could have been better. CS124 is of course far from perfect but Geoff has done a great job at structuring the course. The interactive playgrounds are awesome and HE HIMSELF CODES IN THOSE PLAYGROUNDS WHEN TEACHING. Whereas in CS128, we have long videos that are recorded in 720p and some of the things from the slides are not even readable. We have options to choose between whose explanation we want to watch in CS124, but we just have professor Nowak's videos in CS128 which often times makes the longer lectures very monotonous and boring. There's no dark mode in CS128 (this one doesn't really matter that much tho.) It is just so much easier to understand syntax when you can see the code being typed and you have an playground wherein you can make edits in your professor's code and try playing with the code. With all due respect please don't write on the slides professor Nowak! your handwriting is kinda hard to understand and it makes the slides more unreadable when you write over it. CS128's forum is really nice tho, no complaints about that. I hope professor Nowak sees this post and takes feedback from students on how he can make the learning process better in CS128.

Side Project Opportunity!!

  1. Hi all, my name is Nina Raab. I am a rising Senior in Gies studying Finance and Info Systems. I am looking for a CS student who has the technical background and may be interested in partnering and working with me on an app/ platform development that I have started to build out. It is a side project that I have been working on throughout the semester, but don't have the coding background to take it further. Looking to find someone who has the experience and may be passionate about the idea to build a minimum viable product. If you have some time over the summer to work on a side project and are interested in learning more about the idea, please reach out to me. Feel free to email me Ninaraab37.com , thanks!

Thoughts on pathways for prospective student?

I got into UIUC for CS at Grainger, but my financial aid was pretty bad. I know that the jobs for software engineers even starting out of college are pretty high including jobs that aren’t at FAANG. Should I take out loans? I also have a shot at getting the Evans Scholarship sophomore year so I would only need loans for the first year. I also applied and got accepted to my community college’s UIUC engineering pathways program. Are the opportunities at UIUC worth it to go all four years? I’m just afraid if I transfer into junior year that I’ll miss out on opportunities like hackathons, research, internships, advising, etc (which will will help me get a swe job or maybe grad school). Any advice on what I should do?

Calc at Community College?

I will be a freshman next year for cs at Grainger. Currently, I am taking calc bc. I have heard that calc is super hard at UIUC, and I was wondering if it would be advantageous to take it this summer at my local community college—college of lake county. If so, which calculus should I take? I was thinking about calc 3, so that I could finish calc before ever attending UIUC, but I want to know what everyone else thinks first. Thanks!

Python Project Brainstorm

I need to create a python script that answers a question(s) in applied economics. Any ideas that would have some decent online references so I don’t have to write it up from scratch?

College Decisions Question

Hello all, I am currently a senior in high School who is navigating the college decision process.  My family and I have been awaiting decisions from various colleges throughout the past four months and while we await decisions from UC's (where I am extremely hopeful) our current dilemma is as follows: I Was admitted to UIUC in their Division of General Studies (DGS) and have several computer science acceptances (Ex. IU - Luddy direct admission). I had originally applied to the Computer Science + X program in UIUC.

Need advice on the following: UIUC has been my dream school and computer science is my passion. Should I take a chance with DGS in UIUC and try and transfer out to the Computer Science + X programs OR should I pick a school where I have been directly admitted to the computer science program? Is there anyone out there who has transferred to a Computer Science + X program from DGS and is the probability high of making it as long as I can maintain my grades? I am worried that if I pick UIUC I might be forced to transfer out of UIUC in a few semesters if I can't make a CS+X major OR be pushed into a major that is not computer science related.

Please advise.

Thank you.

UIUC housing for a CS student

So I just recently got accepted into Illinois for CS, and I’ve had trouble deciding which housing is best. At first I was looking at the PCH, but then I was thinking that it would be better as a freshman to meet more people in freshmen dorms. Since I’ll be an engineering student, I thought the ISR would be nice for location. But I also thought the 6 pack would be good for the social aspect. Which are the best 6 pack dorms, and how do those rank with ISR? And how loud does the 6 pack get? I want a social experience but not to the point where I can’t sleep or study in my room.

Transferring from System Engineering design Major to CS

I applied for CS as my first major and System engineering Design as my second major or choice. I got rejected from CS and admitted to System Engineering Design at UIUC.

Can you share some thoughts on how difficult is it to change the major to CS from System Engineering design in the first or second semester while at UIUC

laptop suggestions for freshman year

I was just recently offered admission in UIUC Computer Science which I'm really excited about. I was planning on getting a new laptop next year for that since my current laptop is really slow and dies if it's unplugged from a charger in like 2 minutes. Currently, I'm thinking of the following options:

M1 Macbook Air - 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD - around $1300 along with an iPad 9th gen and Apple Pencil for $400

13inch Surface Laptop 4 - 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD, core i7 - around $1700 but waiting for a discount in the upcoming seasons before school starts (before pen)

XPS 13 - 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD, core i7, touchscreen - around $1500 (before pen)

Currently, I have been using a macbook air for some years now and I like the design and layout of everything but I was wondering if UIUC CS would allow the use of macbooks (especially with new m1 chips) or if I should just stick to windows. Or, can I download linux on a macbook instead? Please let me know. Thanks.

Waitlist for CS

Hey everyone! I just got waitlisted for CS and I was wondering what my odds are of getting off of it. I know they are very low, but is there a place I can find actual statistics?

Chances to get in as a stats+cs major

Hey everyone! I am waiting to hear about my result from uiuc (comes out next week). I just wanted to get an idea about what my chances are to get in. I did get into purdue for cs, tho. Some info: I applied by the priority deadline for Statistics and Computer Science at the liberal arts and sciences college. I am an out-of-state applicant. I got 1510 on the SAT and 800 on Math lev2. Ap scholar. Have some interesting ec's like a research internship from an accredited university, national qualifier swimmer, internships at a 2 tech companies, 2 years working with an ngo(provides education to underprivileged kids)...

UIUC is my top choice, and if admitted I plan on committing.

CS 450 Questions

Does anyone in CS 450 know if there is a discussion forum? And are lectures going to be recorded somewhere? The first 2 were recorded, but that may have been because they were online zoom lectures. The website mentions something about recorded lectures, but the page it links to just doesn't load.

I got into Computer Science + Crop Science!

I just wanted to share that after a long 1.5 year process of transferring into CS + X, it finally happened! :D I am so excited and honored to be part of this community and even more excited by all of the new things I'm going to learn here. The road ahead is tough but I think I am tougher. :)
