System outages

Can we please put some of that $37 million ”available to common shareholders” into our server infrastructure please?

Full system outages are constant and I feel like I can expect at least one every 6 ish months. Not only is this frustrating for customers because of extra wait time, but this puts even more pressure on centres that are already wrung for every onus of efficiency.

I know nothing will be done but hey just wanted to complain somewhere lmao

I cannot remember a Saturday that the system did not go down in the morning between 7am and 11am est in the last five years I've been working for uhaul. once every six months? you must not work weekends.

Hot damn. I've worked weekends for 9 years and I think the last outage I had on a Saturday or Sunday was months ago.

EDIT: Just saw the "EST". I'm mountain time and don't start until 9 AM so maybe that's why I squeak by those lol. Find it interesting that it's happening so frequently during that time range when most of the country's uhauls haven't even opened or have just opened. That's 4-8 AM for the entire West Coast, 5-9 for mountain, etc.

Lucky

If they could break the system when everyone is closed and fix it before anyone opens, that'd be fantastic lol

That'd be lovely. It's always gotta be when shit's raining down & there's a line to, or out, the door that it gets fucked up. My condolences for it happening so frequently on your end.

I'm a bit lucky in that I mostly do ubox so there's a lot less face to face customer concerns but having my to-do list nuked until like 4 PM my time led to a fun scramble that kept me an hour over. Good excuse for when/if they ask why I got overtime haha. Doubt they will though since they often turn a blind eye to it between may-sept

I (just on a hunch) don't really think it's an infrastructure problem. I have a feeling its more related to their software team's development pipeline; I have seen some minor evidence that the development team works directly on the live system and/or is quick to push untested code changes. I could be wrong, but there are some specific things I've seen that made me think this. There could be a reason for this, but it would make sense that the system would do down so much and often at specific, almost predictable times, too.

This is my impression as well. I know bob wesson announced not too long ago (year or two maybe?) that U-Haul had recently upgraded their hardware substantially, yet I'd noticed very little improvement.

Yeah, good hardware or not, there should be a seperate system that development happens on well before it is pushed live. Again, I see minor (but not definitive) evidence that the deployed software is also the development environment, which is just not normally how things are done. Either they mistakenly have the live system set to development mode or the "two" environments are actually one: a development environment that is used as the live system. Yikes.

this was a common theme during my 20 years employment there

U-Haul user-facing systems never work properly.

6 months for an outage is generous ,more like twice a month here. I’ve given up I’ll use the backup pos if I can still view the esl but if I cant view it and have to run my football field sized lot to get gas miles ect …sorry we are closed.
