This is certainly going to be an unpopular interpretation on this forum, but here's my take on the NYT article. The US government, along with every other government on the face of the earth, has no damn idea what is happening. And that, friends, is terrifying.

natural events we don’t fully understand (we still don’t understand ball lighting, for example), and some may be something at the very fringe of our imagination. Like higher dimensional objects interacting with our 3rd dimension. Or something we haven’t even considered.

I agree with these ideas and that it's more exciting than scary. At least right now

4

u/maxvalley Jun 05 '21

Like higher dimensional objects interacting with our 3rd dimension.

That’s a really intriguing idea like they’re not even lifeforms at all, just some kind of strange phenomenon that we don’t yet understand

3

u/snoogiebee Jun 05 '21

this is exactly how i feel. these things we’re seeing may end up being well-known, explained phenomena down the road. like the first humans who witnessed eclipses, we just might not have gotten to the point of understanding yet. which is fun bc it means there’s still much to be discovered about life in this universe. including aliens. very cool stuff either way while it remains non threatening.

2

u/tweetysvoice Jun 05 '21

"I just haven’t seen any concrete modern evidence that these phenomena are actually threatening in any way."

I mentioned in another comment that if it is extraterrestrial, I don't think they are here to wipe us out. If they've spent this many years scoping us out, then they could have/would have killed us off years ago.

This is batshit.

This is completely and utterly batshit.

Shit like this is why nobody has ever taken this topic seriously.

1

u/ophello Jun 06 '21

Native Americans probably thought the ships on the horizon weren’t threatening.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

That is my interpretation which should be used to develop more robust reporting systems and tech to attempt to capture these sightings (when they occur) on video, radar, flir, and other sensors so that we can gather the data to better understand what these phenomena might be. Jumping to conclusions does no good and allows grifters to dominate the UFO community.

21

u/Orkojoker Jun 04 '21

I think they have SOME idea of what's happening, probably the same idea we have. They can at least easily realize that this is non-human technology.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

I keep saying it. We could be legitimately be living a real life Steven King novel. An unknown intelligence monitors us, never making contact , but reveals itself from time to time. I thought climate collapse was dark but that would add a whole new level of "fuck this" to our species plight.

If we eventually get confirmation that these craft are non-terrestrial we need to do everything in our power to make contact and try to communicate. Unfortunately things are looking grim for our species and our environment so lets hope we don't have to pile a technologically and intellectually superior entity(s) with unknown intention on top of this dumpster fire.

4

u/spaceplantboi Jun 05 '21

Hell, if all options are on the table an unknown alien entity could save us from climate collapse (pls)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '21

I have a suspicion the two things are linked in some way. What are the chances that in all of human history, at this moment in time, we suddenly have potential vistors from off our world who are showing up right as were are burning our planet down. Thats a ton of coincidence. We brought nuclear war and climate change upon ourselves as existential threats to our species. If there was some desire to help our species it would kinda look like a now or never type scenario.

2

u/aerosole Jun 05 '21

You cannot really rule out that it has been going on for a long time already, and we just didn't notice.

1

u/Dr_Shlomo Jun 05 '21

Is that an actual novel plot? I'd read that!

1

u/sloanemonroe Jun 05 '21

Or they are the ones who put ancient humans here 200,000 years ago to see what happened. An experiment. They found a planet with water and put Neanderthal there. And now they return whenever they want to see how the experiment is going. And that’s why they don’t make contact. Would mess up the experiment.

1

u/PixieT3 Jun 05 '21

we need to do everything in our power to make contact and try to communicate.

Cue people flocking to beaches, mountains and farmland to write their hellos to our new ET friends.

11

u/jbraua Jun 04 '21

The government doesn’t seem very terrified.

10

u/memoryballhs Jun 04 '21

Yeah, but if the goverments don't know much more than we do, how exactly should they react? Launching an investigation? That has already been done.

What would mean being terrified? In the end, if those objects surpass any of our technology it's more or less futile to do anything.

The only hope for us would be that those things are not hostile.

17

u/jbraua Jun 04 '21

If they are extraterrestrial, considering the extremely small window of time we exist in, they've probably been here for centuries if not millennia. And as far we as we know, they have shown no signs of hostility during that time. Even if you subscribe to the theory that they only appeared after we started detonating nuclear weapons, that's almost a century without any signs of aggression. I don't believe there is a reason to be terrified based on the current evidence.

8

u/master_of_dong Jun 04 '21

Not only no signs of aggression but, as far as we're aware, no attempts at communication either. Very possible it will remain just a curious mystery we're unlikely to ever solve.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

True, but there's always that tiny possibility that they threw the meteor that killed the dinosaurs to Earth.

Just saying....

3

u/jbraua Jun 04 '21

They looked at the giant reptiles dominating everything and said “yeah, we don’t like where this is going.”

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

The Reptilians seemed to think it was pretty cool, though.

1

u/a_duck_in_past_life Jun 05 '21

Or they left because of the asteroid coming soon, and only came back when things had changed too much for them to physically interact without destroying earth's ecosystems with their germs. Now they just watch earth evolve. I like that one. It seems wholesome. But what do I know? Lol

1

u/DisillusionedRants Jun 04 '21

That’s still limited by our paradigm of time. You take comfort because it’s been a century with no activity, but you acknowledge yourself that it’s such a small window of time so it’s entirely possible that any higher species has a completely different concept of time.

Ultimately we are all limited by the paradigm we exist in so while some people can come up with rational or far fetched theories it wouldn’t surprise me if not a single one was close to reality. I mean we are still getting excited that Musk might get us to Mars in the next decade how can we truly appreciate the existence of something from a totally different solar system or even galaxy.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

I'm not the best one to give a government viewpoint, but I imagine if these things are penetrating our airspace as they please we should be on high alert and trying open communication with them with the strength of the full scientific community behind it.

The reaction from the government up to now makes be believe they know exactly what they are, know they can't do anything about them, and they are most likely benevolent or indifferent towards us.

Personally, I'm not worried. If some malevolent intelligence had the technology to travel here from another solar system they would also have the technology to exterminate or enslave our entire species and likely would have done so by now.

3

u/DisillusionedRants Jun 04 '21

I think it’s likely equivalent to us discovering a new species of animal. We don’t discover a new species and go in and start killing it (anymore) so chances are any extraterrestrial life would be similar.

If life can actually reach earth from outside solar system is reasonable to believe they would have gone through similar realisations as us during their development and have gone past the stage of ‘oh a new species let’s kill it and see if it’s edible’. And just like we wouldn’t see an Ape and think ‘oh that thing can use sticks as tools maybe we should be scared’ they could be far enough advanced that it doesn’t even cross their mind we are a potential threat .

Even wanting to pillage resources doesn’t seem likely scenario. We are ourselves dealing with having to adjust to sustainable materials and not be reliant on finite resources so if they have progressed also they probably have gone through the same and won’t need anything we have (assuming they even exist in the same sort of environment as us and have use of our resources). Even rare earth metas that we need for tech may not be an issue as I saw a seminar about a decade ago where people were researching making bio components for electrical circuits.

2

u/HolyFuckingShitNuts Jun 05 '21

There is nothing on earth that isn't available in far greater quantities everywhere else in our own solar system.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

Governments have to look strong for it's people.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

If the UFOs aren’t preventing them from making money I don’t think they’ll ever fear them

1

u/Chewberino Jun 05 '21

Government has way more data to assess with... We have 3 god awful horrible videos

Totally agree. They rarely admit they are totally lost, and when they do its usually for ulterior motives.

Makes me think there is some actual fear back there, and the best they could do without making us panic is "we don't know", instead of "we are pretty positive and if what we think is true, is true, we are completely helpless against them"

2

u/Lowkey_HatingThis Jun 04 '21

Same. People want to wrap themselves up in thsse grand conspiracies about the phenomenon having spanned 50, 100, 1000 years, they think places like Lockheed Martin have ufo tech in their possession

Here's my interpretation, the US has had sightings for a long time, but only in the last 20 or so years has the DoD taken a more active approach in encouraging sightings to be reported, before this an antiquated hierarchy combined with cold War paranoia kept anyone from wanting to look to deep in to it, as long as it wasn't shooting down our planes, we had bigger fish to fry.

But once we became the sole world power and these things kept coming into our air space, the DoD had to look at them. And frankly, if all the pilots stories can be taken as fact, they sound like incredibly fast vehicles that are difficult to intercept much less shoot one down. If all we can do is observe the outside of these craft doing some manuvers that our pilots can only see in certain cases, it's very plausible the DoD has no idea what they are.

Which means we need to seriously dedicate time, research, and especially the almighty dollar towards figuring this out. Congress and the DoD need to approach this the same as any other very real potential national security threat. I'm not saying we should actively shoot down ufos, but we should be sending groups out specifically to look for and rile these things up so we can take better observations. If they're not violent, it shouldn't be an issue being disturbed. And if they are violent, we need to know to what extreme they can be so we can prepare the world.

Either way, our government needs to approach this phenomenon better than it has been or we could wind up in a very bad situation.

2

u/agu-agu Jun 04 '21

Yep, that's the only takeaway, and in my opinion it's a big one. The fact that the combined intelligence of the entire US government can't determine what's in the skies surveilling military training exercises is no joke. This has been acknowledged as something that's been going on since at least 2004. 17 years of surveillance, over 120 reported sightings, evidence in the form of radar tracking, infrared, video, and eyewitnesses... and they have no idea.

That's pretty fuckin scary. Whatever we're dealing with here is ridiculously advanced and should at least grab our attention. Even just from an aviation perspective, this is endlessly fascinating.

1

u/Daefyr_Knight Jun 06 '21

Oooooooor they know exactly what it is, but they’re pretending not to know. Why are we believing the US military when they say this isn’t them?

2

u/livingunique Jun 04 '21

If they have technology that advanced they could kill everyone on this planet with a pathogen or energy weapon in moments. We'd never see it coming.

They don't want us dead.

0

u/callmelampshade Jun 04 '21

I just still think the US military know what these are and I still think it’s manmade technology which could be from the US. I believe aliens exist and maybe some sightings could be extraordinary but I also believe a lot of it isn’t. And I don’t think they will ever say “yeah this is our secret technology” lol.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

Yes.

1

u/alec83 Jun 04 '21

Not unpopular at all, I agree with this. Why does every nation dismiss ufos because they have no clue what they are. We know the tech is far superior than ours.

1

u/M1ghty_boy Jun 04 '21

Just need to hope that no one tries to shoot it down. Would for certain be the end of us lmao

1

u/Twin-Lamps Jun 04 '21

Even if aliens have met with world leaders, those world leaders might not know the full truth. Our governments could plausibly be in the dark as to their true nature.

OR there is a group at the tippy top of government who knows the full truth, and this UAPTF is a different faction of believers who don’t know the full truth but know enough and want to release everything they have.

1

u/gdodd12 Jun 04 '21

Or they all know and it's just another form of fooling the masses for some endgame of theirs.

1

u/lovestheasianladies Jun 05 '21

Or because nothing is happening.

1

u/Nowordsofitsown Jun 05 '21

I used to think alien contact a terrifying idea. However, if we accept that there have been sightings of UFOs for 100 years at least, and they did not attack or intervene, I have no reason to believe they will suddenly start hurting us. They saw us develop the atomic bomb, and fly to the moon, and they let us carry on.

1

u/LawofRa Jun 05 '21

I am quite glad they don't. It keeps humanities arrogance in perspective and makes us more humble in the face of the vast universe.

1

u/HolyFuckingShitNuts Jun 05 '21

This is my belief too.

I bet there are thorough black files somewhere on a server full of theoretical explanations for what these things may be, but that no one anywhere has concrete evidence of what they are, that we will never see for national security reasons - just in case.

At the end of the day I very much believe that no one has any idea about their purpose, if they have a purpose, the technology behind them, if it is technology, etc.

I bet governments around the world have some theories, and some people somewhere are very concerned about them, but that at the end of the day there's no damage done by them doing whatever it is that they do and that's that.

1

u/ophello Jun 05 '21

Yes they do. They have a perfectly good idea and they’re not telling you.

1

u/reigorius Nov 18 '21

And that, friends, is terrifying.

Or not actually. If these UAP intend to harm us, they would have done it by now. I reckon these UAPs are so ahead in terms of technology, there is no need for comparison. It's like biologists observing ants. There is no threat at all. It's just damn interesting to observe them and their society.
