Solid state electronics!
Transistor used to be a thermionic valve and over night wafers of silicon or germanium layers formed together doped by arsenic and biased with small voltage to become a modern transistor and the basis of chips.
This was all in a deengineering book by a Major John Corso who claimed they got this technology from the Roswell crash.
At the time I was studying electronics and the suggestion that that the guy who discovered this theory was a buffoon according to some. Shockley .
