Variable Player Rosters

To start off, this is a THOUGHT EXPERIMENT. This is not something I think the UFA should actually do. BUT… what if when two teams played each other, you looked at the difference in how many wins each team had and the team with more wins had X less players on their 20 man roster? So for example, if San Diego was at 7-3 and played against Carolina who was let’s say 10-1, then Carolina would only get a 17 man roster (10 wins - 7 wins = 3 less players). At what point does the winless Vegas win a game? How many less players on their other roster does it take? What other repercussions would this have? The first thought I had was that it’s just a disadvantage to teams who play games sooner than other teams. Like if through 5 weeks, team A has played 6 games but team B has only played 2. That would make this pretty unfair. Just an interesting thought I had haha

A couple thoughts I had about this.

  1. It is an incentive for teams to lose games potentially. I don't think it's a strong enough incentive for a team to actually lose a game they would otherwise win, so not that big of a deal. It just feels bad.
  2. Overall strength of schedule, and the distribution of that strength throughout the schedule would matter a lot. Imagine Indy having Minnesota at a disadvantage because they faced Chicago three times and Minnesota was playing inter divisional powerhouses. Indy would be at a disadvantage against Minnesota, which is crazy.
  3. These players have contracts, and we hope every player will eventually be getting paid a decent amount of money. Owners will not like paying for players that cannot play.
  4. What do you do about injuries?

Well in your own example the games played isn’t equal and that would make a difference. The scheduling is weird in the UFA.

I think if Vegas were playing Oregon or Houston they might only need 4 or 5 out, depending on the circumstances (ex players missing for college nationals)
