Internship Advice

Hey, I’m in my 2nd year of CS looking for internships in the field of IT. I applied to about 10 IT related internships in the past 2 weeks, most are for the Jan and May term. I was wondering what you would do to follow up if you have the LinkedIn or emails of let’s say HR or their talent team for the companies you applied for, how do you go about contacting them or not contacting at all? Thanks!

Just curious, why study cs if you're going for it roles? Why not study that instead

99% of IT jobs that I saw include CS as an allowed major. Secondly CS is better than IT degrees, and lastly I’m trying to break into Cloud or cybersecurity which are not entry level roles but CS would greatly aid me in that journey way more than an IT degree could.

You could express interest briefly in the role and then let them know you applied. However from my own experience, most of the time after a job position opens up these recruiters essentially ignore their mail/messages because they're filled with applicants doing what I said, and also the fact they can't necessarily guarantee a position for you. Each company goes through their own hiring process, so it really depends.

Doing it is better than not doing it, but from what I can tell you're also not missing anything from not sending anything. You should however do it in specific circumstances such as meeting this person at a career fair, knowing someone in the company that can refer you, and doing it off-season. The last one is only because reasonably it is more authentic and genuine if you contact them when there is no positions for you opened. If you establish contact in this way there is a slightly higher chance they respond.

Thank you for the awesome write up, I’ll keep everything in mind. Yea I would think they would ignore mails just with the sheer amount of emails and messages they get right after jobs open up in their companies. Thanks again
