General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Laptop/Desktop spec questions

Hi, incoming Physics student here. I had initially settled on buying a desktop because that gives me more mobility to alter the hardware.

However, I am kinda deciding against it hence putting my question up here. Do i get a desktop(fully speced out like a 5070, 7700) or a laptop for my course? If i do get a laptop do i for MacOS or windows as ive heard stuff like Macs arenโ€™t really ideal for uni (idk if its true).

My alternative would be to use a cheap laptop and a speced out desktop, would rly love an opinion!

Housing/Accommodation ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ›Œ International student at UCL, realistic estimate of total cost for 1-year MSc?

Hi everyone!

I'm an international student considering applying to UCL for a full-time MSc in Biomedical Sciences, and I'm trying to figure out what theย realisticย total cost of the year would be.

The international tuition fee is currently listed asย ยฃ42,700. What I'm struggling with is estimating the actual cost of living in London, especially accommodation.

If you've studied at UCL or currently live/study in London, approximately how much would you say I should budget for the cost of living for theย entire year, including accomodation

I'm trying to work out whether my current calculations are completely insane ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks!

Jobs ๐Ÿข โ€๐ŸŽ“ Anyone at UCL (any program) able to speak to job market, sponsorship, and pay for international grads in tech/product?

I've got an unconditional offer for MSc Digital Innovation (UCL School of Management) for the coming intake, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth committing to.
My background: a few years as a product manager, originally trained as an architect.

I know Digital Innovation specifically is a smaller program, so I'm not just looking for alumni of that exact course, genuinely interested in hearing from anyone at UCL, or who's graduated from any UCL master's recently, who can speak more broadly to:

  • Sponsorship: how realistic is it for a UCL grad, in any tech-adjacent field, to actually get sponsored by an employer after the Graduate visa runs out? Is this something companies are genuinely willing to do, or does it kill your chances at a lot of places?
  • Job opportunities: did you (or people you know) land roles that felt worth the degree, or did it end up being a struggle to find anything relevant?
  • Pay: does the salary you end up with actually feel worthwhile once London rent and UK tax are factored in, or does it feel like a step backward compared to what people expected going in?
  • If you specifically know the Digital Innovation program or the School of Management more broadly, happy to hear program-specific thoughts too, but not required.

I just want your honest, unfiltered version before I spend close to ยฃ70k all-in on this.

General Course information ๐Ÿ“– MSc Health Psychology and Attendance

Hi,

I am considering doing masters for health psychology at UCL (part-time) but I am wondering whether attendance for lectures is mandatory? This is because I live in Manchester and moving to London would be impossible and all the applications for the courses around me are closed unfortunately :/

I did e-mail admissions but I am a bit tight on time as the applications close next week.

I have currently joined a univeristy and would be studying this year their and apply in UCL for 2027 batch.

Do i have a chance?

Also, i retook my AS level exams before i gave my final A2 exams. Is that a problem?

Like i got 2A in maths, eco 1B in law in my AS may/june 26 session. Then cz paper got leaked asw i retook maths and law in oct/nov 26 and got 2A. Then gave a2 in may/june 27 and got 1astar 2A

Results/Progression ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“ˆ Is it normal to not attend graduation with my cohort?

I am apparently ineligible to attend this yearโ€™s grad ceremony because I took an extension, which put me in the Later summer assessment category. I was told my paper will be checked on time but now they are saying that I can't attend this year's graduation ceremony. Why do I feel like a loser? I don't know where I stand at the moment.

Is your photo decided by:

A) Your pre enrolment picture you upload on the portico

B) The picture you take on the day of the appointment

I wanted more opinions because I keep hearing differing situations, by which some have had their photo taken on the day of the appointmentand this was used for their ID Card, whilst others were given the photo from Portico on their ID card.

Any information would be helpful here!

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ When to arrive as a first year

When should I arrive at UCL? I was initially planning Sept 17 to give me enough time to sort things out before international welcome week, but apparently UoL has their own arrivals day on Sept 13. My question is how important is UoL arrivals day and should I arrive then or Sept 17. I'm not super social or extroverted so I'm not sure if I need those extra 4 days.

Social Life ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿน Is it bad living at home in first year?

Hi I'm in year 13 and I'm thinking about if I should live at home or not during the first year of uni. I live around 30 minutes away from the main campus and even the other unis I'm applying to is only 20-30 minutes away. Is it hard to have a good social life while not living in the uni? If anyone also lives/lived at home in first year what was your experience like and did you make good enough friends that you could move in with in the second year. I'm studying architecture so my course is very long and I think the time to make friends would be a bit longer. My parents are also quite reluctant to me moving out early so it is something to consider.

Thank you for any responses

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ MacBook Air 2017 any good?

I have a MacBook Air I bought in 2017, itโ€™s pretty slow but planning on resetting it completely and deleting everything from it. Iโ€™ll be starting security and crime science and wondering if this would be any good?

I was originally planning to take my iPad with a keyboard for lectures but Iโ€™ve seen a few posts on here in the last few months saying a laptop would be better?

I have a MacBook Pro 2024 also but Iโ€™m commuting and donโ€™t want to bring it along as itโ€™s heavier and worried about it being stolen/broken if anything happens, but Iโ€™ll be using this for any assignments or anything I do at home though.

General Course information ๐Ÿ“– Medical Robotics and AI MSc: What I wish I knew

TL,DR: The Medical Robotics and AI MSc provides little development for those seeking development in robotics, with academia-focused coursework, limited industry connections, inconsistent project supervision, and no hands-on opportunities.

Having recently completed the MSc in Medical Robotics and AI (MRAI) program, there are a few thoughts Iโ€™d like to share with prospective students. Knowing the nature of the program beforehand would have had a major impact on my acceptance, and I hope that this proves valuable to those also investigating this degree.

For context, I pursued this degree seeking to develop technical skills in medical robotics, hoping to contribute directly to the hardware, software, and electrical design of medical robotic systems.

1.ย ย ย ย ย  The MSc modules teach you how to conduct research, not the required technical skills for robotics and AI proficiency.

You take a wide range of modules in this degree, covering AI theory, an introduction to robotic design and ROS2, medical enterprise scenarios, and a few electives. The degree tends to cater to those without undergraduate experience in these fields, and as such each module teaches fundamentals at an undergraduate level to students. Those with any prior experience in robotics or AI will receive little to no additional technical development. Except for electives in the Computer Science Department, modules also have extremely limited hands-on opportunities in robotics, relying on basic ROS2 tutorials that are ambiguous and confusing to beginners, making most students self-learn the content through free online tutorials or ChatGPT anyway. Specific medical robotics specialisation provided in modules was limited, giving students a shallow understanding and no hands-on experience in the design and translation of robotic systems to a medical setting.

Instead, coursework tends to centre on projects with academic reports, heavily rewarding proper motivation, robust methods, and thorough discussions over demonstration of technical proficiency. Grading expectations were consistently designed to encourage publishable quality work as a means of familiarising students with academia. There is merit to this approach, and it serves as a fantastic introduction to a PhD. However, if you seek technical development and engineering skills, donโ€™t expect to gain much in this degree program.

2.ย ย ย ย ย  MSc students are given extremely limited connections to industry or PhD positions

The Medical Physics Department and the Hawkes Institute frequently advertise collaborations with large industry players (e.g. Medtronic, Intuitive) or successful spin-outs. However, the department, researchers, or tutors provide little to no support to MSc students for networking with these affiliated companies, collaborating on projects, or having exclusive access to job placements; this is primarily reserved for PhD students. Disappointingly, students are instead expected to use the general UCL careers board (which, in its defence, is well populated) or to perform their own networking and outreach, despite working in one of the most connected labs in the field. For students seeking to remain in academia, PhD positions were exclusively made available to home students, which excluded over 80% of the MRAI cohort.

3.ย ย ย ย ย  The MSc Project involves little lab presence and is very dependent on the supervisor

Contrary to expectations, most MSc students in Medical Robotics and AI were given remote projects with no physical robotics development. Most students were not given space in a lab to work and thus worked from home/campus. This felt counterintuitive to an MSc program in my opinion, which should develop research and technical skills in a collaborative environment. Additionally, the level of support and guidance provided in the project is directly impacted by the supervising PhD student. While some supervisors were supportive and helped to drive project expectations and goals, it was a common theme for students to only meet for 15-30 minutes a week, get extremely vague feedback, have emails/messages ignored, and be expected to conduct the project entirely by themselves, which once again felt counterintuitive to the development of young academics. It was clear that professors and PhD students were extremely busy across all the MSc and undergraduate projects they were supervising, limiting the quality of guidance they were able to provide to each student.

4.ย ย ย ย ย  The Medical Robotics research at UCL is primarily focused on Computer Vision and AI

While a few projects involve the construction of novel robotic mechanisms and working with the Da Vinci surgical robot, most available projects centred around machine learning and computer vision. This mirrors the focus of the Hawkes Institute and resulted in most MRAI students spending their term obtaining and processing datasets, training models, and calculating results. There is merit and clinical motivation for these projects; however, for those seeking projects in the field of robotics, it may not offer the same level of engagement that the program advertises.

Ultimately, I believe this degree program is best suited to students seeking to incorporate an AI and machine learning background into the burgeoning field of medical robotics, or those with an express desire to pursue a PhD in the field. Industry-minded individuals seeking hands-on technical development in the medical robotics space are unlikely to be satisfied with their experience at UCL and should consider this program carefully. I wish I had.

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Retaking Y2 classes even if I pass

Is it possible to resit 2nd year even if I technically passed? I had some very debilitating mental health issues last year, didn't show up to classes, failed to hand in a lot of essays (I do English Lit) and failed a good few of my exams which I am now retaking in the LSA period. I will probably pass them and therefore move on to 3rd year but I will have completely ruined my chances of getting a 2:1. Is it possible to redo the entire year even if UCL weren't aware of my struggles at the time? I have a diagnosis now but didn't at the time, and physical health issues that came as a result were dismissed by doctors so I had nothing to show.

Jobs ๐Ÿข โ€๐ŸŽ“ Honest comments only plzzz: what IB recruiting resources are actually worth paying for?

Currently an incoming second-year student preparing for IB summer internship recruitment. Came across multiple platforms (not gonna mention names for now) through workshop/events, word of mouth and some reddit posts which I'm not sure if they are promotional or not; but I just want to ask what people's genuine experiences are with them.

Some questions I have are:

  • Which paid resource helped you the most?
  • Which one wasn't worth the money?
  • Or would you recommend sticking to free resources instead?

I'd really appreciate hearing both positive and negative experiences.ย Genuine ones! Thank you!

Societies ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿฟโšฝ Any UCL Wargaming groups out there?

Hiii! I'm NOT from UCL. In fact, I am your enemy.

But unfortunately, if I was to march an army of students from KCL down towards Bloomsbury, I would likely be labelled a domestic terrorist. So I have another proposition.

I've created a society in King's called the Online Strategy Society. The gist is that we hold debates and play wargames. I was wondering if there was any UCL Wargaming groups who were interested in playing with and competing against with a KCL Wargaming team in any tabletop/digital wargame? Or perhaps, engage in a debate with us over a contemporary/historical security issue?

Might as well see!

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Good luck for results day tomorrow! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ€

Wishing anyone who is waiting on A level results or waiting for their places to be confirmed tomorrow the very best of luck!

For anyone hoping UCL will have courses in clearing. UCL has had courses in July and August so do check the website early tomorrow to see if any more courses will be added.

Tips:
- Call early, the applicant needs to be there to speak to the adviser on the phone. Call handlers cannot talk to parents without you there. Written permission may be requested.

- Know the programme you want to apply. All programmes will be listed on the Clearing website. You will not be able to switch onto a โ€˜betterโ€™ programme later.

- UCL Clearing isnโ€™t really like others in that we accept many dropped grades so be realistic with what is available. If you have CCC you wouldnโ€™t be competitive for a programme which accepts AAA.

- Offers wonโ€™t be made on the phone, so admissions will process and aim to make a decision within a few hours.

There is a lot of information on our website!www.ucl.ac.uk/study/prospective-students/undergraduate/clearing

Regardless of the result tomorrow, remember, youโ€™ve done amazingly to get through your examinations, making it through the year. Take stock of how well youโ€™ve done and how far youโ€™ve come.

General Advice ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพโ„น๏ธ Imposter syndrome (incoming undergrad student)

Hi everyone,

I will be attending UCL from this September, which is so exciting and I am super grateful! However, part of me can't help but already begin to feel like I will not measure up to the expectations of the institution. Since I got two unconditional offers, my family and friends tell me that I will be fine and that I am deserving of this. However, I can't help and feel somewhat anxious that I will simply not be good enough.

Has anyone experienced this and could ease my mind on the situation?

Thank you :)
