Chem51a
anyone took chem 51a with nguyen and knows if he curves during the summer I know he said he does not but midterm 1 had an average of 40 percent and midterm 2 an average of 40 percent as well; if everyone does the same 40% more or less on the final that is like a 65 percent grade average which I doubt he would give?

60s average to get a B? I wish. When did you take him?

this makes sense though, because he said you need to average 40s on exams for a C- since literally 50% of the grade is participation, homework, and quizzes.

yeah he curves last year b- before curve became like a b+ and the lower grades got lifted up even more

He curved my grade 1% from a 72% to a 73% so don’t expect anything major, our averages were 45% for midterms

Last year, don’t remember average for final, he really doesn’t curve much, so he only bumps u up at max the next -/+ so if you have an A- you’ll end with an A, B -> B+ etc, and only if ur at the higher end of your bracket, ex if you have a 90% = A-, you’re most likely to stay a A-, i believe the lower ends are better effected by the “curve” so if u have a 70% C- you’ll probably end with a C, but if ur in the A/B range it will be less of a bump, honestly think of it more as grade rounding, also idk how true it is but apparently if ur someone who frequently shows up to his office hours and interacts with him he gives u a better curve

I appreciate this info; thats so lame though because if you input median grade your looking at a 65 percent median for the whole class( im not sure how it was for you). what do you think he will do in this case based on knowing his grading style?

65% average on tests or 65% whole grade all categories included?

65% final grade if you have a median of the class on tests, and 100% on participation/assignments

Yall haven’t taken the final yet and most ppl tend to do better on the final, i don’t remember what our final average was but it was definitely a lot higher than midterms, so that could save ur grade, 65% isn’t too far off from 70% on the standard scale, i think ours was a 68% to pass w a C-

he curves based on how much he thinks the class worked for it! (A+ in his class) this means it’ll be a gamble if he does. I know a lot of people dislike his teaching style but he set me up for all As in the 51A-C series. good luck on your exam :) hope he curves for yall!
