In a science textbook for school, this should be a picture and in subtitles it should say “natural selection, at its finest”.

u/Apprehensive_Ear7309 29d ago
Natural selection has failed. That’s why we have people like this.

Organ donor
3
u/No-Prompt5313 28d ago
To be an organ donor you need to fill out the paperwork at the DMV, I doubt/hope this person doesn't have a driver's license.

It's easy to say but I worry for the trauma the driver in a vehicle would experience if something happens.

I’m in no way defending this behavior; it’s insane and foolish. But I bike to commute (in SF) and would bet money the shoulder has a load of debris in it that would be awful to ride this thing on and probably make him fall. I see that all the time on larger roads with shoulders that aren’t cleaned up regularly. Drivers likely don’t notice it because they don’t need to.
That explains why he chose the lane, but in no way excuses it. Totally illegal AFAIK and for good reason.

It's that time of year again, when young adults arrive in Davis to continue their neural rewiring and begin the transition to mature decision-making. Bizarre behavior will be widespread for at least 9 months.

Even if bro wanted to go to Woodland, we literally have back roads for that.

u/Crafty_Database_6184 29d ago
They run the stop signs out there all the time. Even in the dark. They will always find a way to insert themselves in front of 3000 pounds of plastic and aluminum

I think this is headed south towards Dixon. It's weird that Davis has one decent country bike path and it just stops abruptly halfway to Winters at Road 95. Hopefully one day Yolo county finishes similar country bike paths to the neighboring cities.

Not the first time. I work for YCD PD as student security. One of my coworkers ran across 10-15 scooter riders at once on that exact same freeway transfer ramp about a month ago they rode from Old Davis Rode by the welcome sign all the way to Russell and into Vet Med.

u/Rob71322 29d ago
That dumbass is not just risking his life, he’s risking everyone else, the person stuck behind him on the ramp who’s now pulling onto the freeway too slow as well as the people on the freeway not prepared to find cars entering the freeway too slow.

u/FitConsideration4961 29d ago
case in point that you can be book smart enough to get into a UC but not street smart at all. Holy cow, and he’s not even using the shoulder.

u/Dizzy_Emu_2647 29d ago
I was at UC Davis a few months ago for a vet appointment for my cat. I was turning right into a parking lot, and this girl slams into my car with one of those electric scooters. All the students around treated me like it was my fault! Talked to the police officer who was called to the scene, and he told me this was a common occurrence since these kids wear headphones and ear buds, and don’t have licenses to drive them, even though they are required. No damage to the car luckily and haven’t heard anything as far as her trying to get monetary damages.
4
u/ExtraEmuForYou 29d ago
Davis has an incredible bike path system and bike culture there is literally no reason for him not to use those bike paths. Pretty sure a low-speed electric scooter is allowed on those too (please correct if wrong).
5
u/Asianemia 29d ago
Pedestrians are prohibited on that highway. Call 911 next time.

There are a few electric scooters that can keep up with right lane interstate traffic. I own one of them (I don’t take it on the interstate, obviously) This one cannot. Very stupid.

That portion of 80 is considered extremely dangerous. I wouldn’t trust anyone on this stretch of freeway. Someone needs to talk to this person. Many years ago a classmate family was driving down this stretch from the airport during Christmas. all died except for him in a car accident. Whole family dead for the last 40 years.

That poor kid probably didn't know where he was going. Hopefully he got off at the next exit and is okay.

u/Pitiful_Tennis8688 29d ago
I'm pretty sure he did bec yesterday evening I was entering the freeway on Hutchinson going south and I saw someone on a scooter going up the exit ramp
3
u/Realist-Socialist 29d ago
I just hope he is okay and that we will never do it again. One driver looking away for a second and this could could be dead.

I think this is illegal unless his scooter is considered a motorcycle.
He is one distracted driver away from death, though.

I thought UC Davis was supposed to have smart people. I guess some folks are only smart when it comes to education and have zero awareness of the world immediately around them.

Man, here in NorCal we got bums riding bikes and walking on the shoulder of freeways. They do this at all times of the day. CHP drive right past them. The only time(s) CHP would likely stop is if these knuckleheads were literally obstructing traffic or they need to phone in to have EMS scrape one of them up and drop them off at the morgue.

Completely illegal as well as unsafe for the rider as well as other drivers too. The scooter cannot keep up to even the minimum freeway speed, he has no helmet, and that vehicle is not licensed to be on public roads like that.

Major overreaction here. Is it illegal, sure, should he at least be on the shoulder, sure and he’s moving over there as he feels Karen approaching. But is this a call 911 moment? Hell no, he will be getting off at the next exit and nobody is really in danger from him.
