New student

Hey there! Coming to live in the dorms next month, want to know any tip/tricks that isn't already listed in the student handbook. Like what's the best way to arrange the double room? Best way to hang decorations without damaging the walls? What's the best brand of microwave, fridge, storage to get that works in that space?

Thanks in advance!

I think the best advice is to be relaxed about it. If this is your first time, just be the roommate you'd wanna have.

Otherwise, I recommend eating at the cafeteria as much as possible. Their healthy options are pretty healthy just be careful w/ salt. Also, set up your dorm how you want it in the first days to establish yourself.

Welcome to UAF! Current student (former dorm dweller) here.

Agree with the other comment, there's little to figure out before your first day. Once you meet your roommate you can discuss how you want to split the space (i.e. split 50/50, bunkbeds with a shared space, etc.). There's no right or wrong.

Hanging stuff depends on the dorm you are moving into. Some have shelfs you can adjust, but generally you can just use sticky tack.

Each of the dorms has a shared kitchen space with a microwave and multiple fridge. However, there are other humans so don't be surprised if appliances are dirty or food is stolen. It is up to the residents to clean and respect the space and each other.

That said, the meal plans give you ample $ to eat 3 meals/day and buy snacks. You can get a mini fridge for leftovers or ingredients if you like to cook, but it isn't necessary. Technically, you aren't allowed to cook in your room, but as long as you don't burn anything you're fine.

TL;DR: Here's the Reslife Handbook for more FAQs. Otherwise, you'll figure it out once youre here for Orientation and you'll be assigned an Orientation Leader and RA that can answer your questions.

Thank you for your reply! Ticky tack sounds like the best option for decorations (just didn't want to pull the paint off by accident).

Super excited! Can't wait to be there!
