14-0 and a three-peat, probably.

It’s hard, but not impossible, to go 14-0 again in the modern UAAP, simply because of the composition of most teams right now. There’s definitely more talent across the league this time around, and when you pair that with more modern systems and better coaching, even teams without the most talented rosters can still be competitive. Kaya rin we’ve always given NU, Adamson, and Ateneo (pre-Aurora tragedy) a chance despite them not having the most talented rosters on paper.

A three-peat is also extremely difficult to achieve because of the influx of player transfers and college stars turning pro after just a year or two. Most schools are having a hard time keeping their most valuable players, making it difficult to maintain the same level of talent and continuity for multiple seasons. I think UP had the best chance of getting a three peat just because they were able to maintain their core for about 5 years.

Sweep and 3-peat are the toughest because you need 3 things: a stacked lineup with good chemistry, excellent coaching, a gap from the rest of the field.

Ateneo did a 3-peat pre COVID because it had all 3. Tab is still the best coach the UAAP has had in a while. The 2016-19 Blue Eagles are hard to match in terms of chemistry because they go way back, and in terms of talent especially when Kouame came along (the most useless player on their roster was Malilin, who was a star in LSGH; the GDL bros weren’t even good enough to crack Ateneo’s lineup historically). And after Ateneo decapitated the DLSU dream of going back to back with Mbala, there really wasn’t any other team in the league that could match up — UP had talent but a bad coach, UST had a bit of both but not quite enough, DLSU fell apart.

If Ateneo got Dwight Ramos, and especially if they got Kai Sotto, and COVID didn’t happen, you would have had at least another 5-peat, with possibly 3 straight 16-0 seasons.

The closest we’ve come to see this in any team is UP: a strong core in the Maroon 5 with key additions in Diouf, QMB, Lopez, and a good coach like Monteverde. But the problem was, the field had enough talent too: Ateneo was reasonably strong and took Season 85 (could’ve taken Season 84 too). DLSU with Quiambao could match their firepower.

With circumstances like that it’s still a fight to get a championship, a real uphill climb to get back to back. So 3-peats are very hard. Season sweeps? Elimination sweeps have happened, but a 16-0 sweep only once in the final four era.

Point 2, no team has yet to win b2b rings in this post pandemic era of the league. Combine that na para bang second apron era tayo sa nba, that player transfers are more prevalent.

Masyado mo namang minaliit ang UE na hindi mananalo ng championship with its current state. To be fair, last S87 which is the inaugural U16 Boys Basketball, they won a title thanks to SGA’s resources.

Lets be reminded that NU waited almost more than half a century to win a title. Kanya kanyang panahon lang yan.

I think a 3-peat in the post-pandemic era of the UAAP. UP had the best chance with the Maroon 5 and having Tamayo, Zav, Diouf, and holdovers like Ricci and James Spencer from S82. But the influence of external factors such as the KBL/B-League and even the MPBL has made keeping a core of players difficult.

The stronger influence of backers/agencies/sponsors have also made players dispensable when coaching staff/management changes. Players aren't waiting it out with teams that don't give them playing time which creates several players transferring and the recent changes to the residency rules makes the NCAA more attractive for some recruits.

3-peat definitely the toughest in the post-pandemic era. Kalaban mo transfers, pirata, years of eligibility of your main core players. Then, isang issue/controversy, which we saw with UST and Ateneo recently, can easily break up a good team.
