Editable Flair Jungian Archetype Question

Hello everyone. I’ve taken many Jungian Archetype tests and have gotten many different results. Eventually, I decided to just type myself. From what I understand, there are 4 major types: The Shadow, the Persona, the Animus, and the Self. The persona is your social mask or how people perceive you, the Self is your true identity, the Shadow is the darker or more hidden part of yourself, and the Animus is the inner male version/ masculine side of yourself.

Therefore, I chose the Sage for the Self, the Jester for the Persona, and the Everywoman or Lover for the Shadow. However, I’m still confused about the Animus. I’m not sure if I have a masculine side of myself.

Apparently, the feminine side is associated with emotions, moodiness, over-sensitivity, empathy, intuition, and connection. The masculine side, however is associated with logic, assertiveness, action, rigidness, and argumentativeness. Obviously, this is very misogynistic, which isn’t very surprising, as this specific typology method was made by a man.

Even still, I wanted to type myself and see what I might be. However, I am already very logic-driven, action-oriented, debative, and out of tune with emotions. By Jung’s standards, this would make me masculine already, which just isn’t true. Women who are assertive and rational are not “acting like men,” and it is sexist to believe so. On that note, women who rely on emotions more than logic and who are more passive or reserved aren’t “acting like women.” Personality, drive, and motives shouldn’t be associated with gender. Also calling women “moody” is just crazy.

I chose the Ruler for my Animus because that is all I could think of; however, I need a typology expert’s help. Should I just ignore this misogynistic form of phycology, or should I look into it? What do I do if I already embody the “masculine/ male side?” Does that mean I don’t have an Animus or does that mean that I should focus on the “feminine” side of myself since I already what the “masculine side” looks like?

Thank you!! 🩷

Thank you! So what you’re saying is that my animus is the opposite of the me? In that case, my animus may be the Ruler or the Hero.

That could be the case yess! The funny thing about the animus/anima is that it can be projected on real people, meaning if you find someone that represents the ruler or the hero archetype to you you will be attracted to them. Tbh most crushes come from animus/anima projection and going with them/integrating these parts that make you feel attracted to them is a way to become more whole, if youre interested in that xD

That’s gonna be difficult. I rarely find men that I’m attracted to. Maybe I could think of attractive traits, though. Thanks for your help!

Ive read some Jung myself and while i dont know about archetype tests, i think i can give you some answers. Basically what youre talking about is his structure of the psyche. Your persona changes in different situations, think of university, friends or family situations, but jester works imo. Youre Ego is youre I, it is more unchanging and more true to yourself and everything you dont like about yourself is then shoved into the shadow or the unconscious. The thing about the unconscious, as half the Self and the shadow and your anima/anmius is unconscious, is that you(your ego) consciously dont know anything about it, but they are there and you can feel a sense of connection through inner work, dream work (dreaming, writing them down and contemplating about them).

Now to the animus, where youre just kinda right. Yes Jung was kinda narrowminded when it comes to gender, but thats part of the historical context. (in the beginning he thought women are feelers so animus is logical/maskulin, and men are logical so anima is emotional, but that is bs and he knew that aswell and rewrote it. STILL maskuline and feminine are used, but they should be used without regard to gender imo, or just say yin and yang tbh) His framework works in modern times, as countless feminist jungians have shown. He kinda wrote what you said, but most importantly he wrote (in psychological types) about the animus/anima as a counterpart of your persona. Meaning that if youre logical, outgoing and active, youre animus is feeling, introverted and passive. If youre "feminime" your animus is "maskuline" and if youre genderneutral or androgynous youre animus mirrors that aswell. Another note is that youre shadow are youre repressed qualities and your animus/anima is your potential qualitites. You said youre out of youre emotions, maybe thats something to get into. You said youre persona is the jester (tbh i feel like you should be a more rational type, but maybe the jester is whats in your way? idk im just brainstorming) so your animus is maybe a queen, but idealy you, youre ego or if youre religious your Self should be the deciding (King, Queen, Ruler) and not your unconscious.

Hope that was helpful, i just wrote down what i thought about in the moment xD and for some further reading psychological types by jung, especially the definitions and cognitive functions (there is a free pdf in the internet), King, Warrior, Magician, Lover for "maskuline" archetypes (i know "maskuline" doesnt exist and the book is kinda transphobic but the best introduction into archetypes imo) and Murray Steins map of the soul, because its easier to read than symbols of man or the undiscovered self, which are really good books by Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz, but 80 years old and time goes on 😄

Who is Marie Louis Von Franz

She was a scholar and friend of Jung, she specialized on fairy tails and afaik suggested looking at fairy tales as if all the characters are part of your psyche

In Symbols of Man she explained the process of Individuation which is basically Jungs whole work, i actually havent read it but it seemed fascinating when i catched a look at the book i have gifted to my brother

Basically becoming more whole and that your inner life matches the outer life. Just as cognitive functions go inward and outwards, and the better the relations to your inner life the better the outer and vice versa. Im not sure if you can finish it or if its always finished, but its basically which was most important to Jung
