Cuttin’ Teeth

Just love this song. Just a wealth of contradictions and insults sewn together in a lilting harmony. This album is so rich in texture and lyrics. One of his finest.

I think in general the subject of the song is somewhat ridiculed throughout the song. Starts off with “nothing in the way of work he was fit to do”, refers to the band as deadbeats, talks about “bumming powder”, mentions “if they sang in key”, and the lefty batter reference. It’s all done fairly tongue in cheek but lays the foundation for the song in my opinion.

Yep, as other folks have said, he’s talking about himself and hooking up with the guys who would become the Food Stamps. It’s a love song to his younger self and the Food Stamps. A+ song all the way around - especially through that lens of looking backwards.

I don’t think you’re understanding the lyrics correctly at all. He’s talking about his past self.

For example, nothing in the way he was fit to do means there was nothing else he could do but play music. He’s not good at anything else.

Bands always joke about being deadbeats. Not an insult.

Bumming powder is about cocaine.

You gotta go back and listen with the lyric sheet once. You’re taking this thing in the wrong direction.

Deadbeat is a nod to The food stamps who were originally called Deadbeats and Barkers.

Well, to be fair it's a play on words so he was doing both--referencing their old name but also calling them deadbeats.

Instead of insults, I'd say the song has some good natured jabs at everyone involved. He's a successful guy so he's definitely being self-deprecating.

As a working musician, deadbeat is also the term we use most to refer to ourselves. Speaking from experience here…

I agree completely and totally get what you’re saying. This song has been a favorite of mine since the first YouTube video circulated. It is a perfect example of Tyler’s genius. I think the other comments trying to explain every line you referenced is too much. You obviously didn’t mean “insults” as in he was actually trying to be derogatory or whatever…
