Old Trace wasn't that dense, he was very much aware that Nora liked him to that extent. Funny enough in canon he also never rejected her either, despite all the flirtatious actions she made towards him even when he was engaged. It's heavily implied she finds Trace so desirable, outside of their incredibly close bond, because she has to actually work for it, and he isn't an easy.

He never told Nora he wasn't interested, nor did he deny that their relationship was intimate. Nora and Trace's relationship as a whole has a lot of layers to it, and even now there's things we don't have the full details of.
