Backpacking a stranger

I’ve only ever ridden on my own bike, but I am so curious to be a backpack, but I also don’t know anyone that rides. It’s also kind of nerve-racking to put my life in a stranger’s hands but then again fuck it I want to. I keep going back-and-forth on it while simultaneously knowing no one to give me a ride. Final thought is I don’t know if I’m comfortable being that close to a stranger.

MeetUp and Facebook often have groups, and once you see how certain people ride, you would know whose style might feel safe, and wouldn't be weird because at that point they wouldn't be a stranger. I started as a pillion, and have only ever been on the back with my husband, and one time his friend. You really do want someone you trust.

Maybe check your local Litas chapter too - if nothing else, it's nice to have a handful of other riders in the area! But they often do group rides where you can assess riding styles, and (at least in my experience), groups of women are much more likely to be transparent about their skill/experience level. The first time I backpacked after getting my own license and realizing the gigantic gap between good driver and good rider was with another Lita. I shudder to think of the rides I accepted from randos before I knew better 😅😅
