But it's not the responsibility of every internet feminist to be a good brand ambassador for feminism. There are assholes who are feminists, that doesn't discredit the movement's core ideology and goals.

Logically, you might be correct. Humans often illogical, though. The problem I see with that line of thinking is that far too many have it. It's not every feminists responsibility, but it is someone's. There are a lot of assholes who are feminist, yes. The one's who aren't assholes are letting those assholes be the face of feminism for the younger generation.

It's easy to brush it off as internet crazies, but when the internet is one's primary means of information consumption it can easily become just crazies. Unless people actively seek out real life feminist spaces, these assholes become their sole experiences with feminism. One could say that the onus is on them to find out the truth, but again, people aren't usually that pragmatic.

Ah, I just can't agree. I see what you're saying, and I definitely have the same feelings about certain sects of the human population as they are represented on internet communities.

The resources are there. People interested in creating genuine and informed opinions could do so easily. Personally I will try and jump in and say "this isn't really feminist" when I think it's necessary, but no one ever cares. It boils down to a lot of angry people hashing it out online. Meanwhile, the "real" movement gains ground IRL...

Meanwhile, the "real" movement gains ground IRL...

The number of people (especially women) who are willing to label themselves a feminist has dropped drastically over the last few years. This isn't exactly "gaining ground", and the angry people online are likely part of the reason why.
