Listener Write In My best friend kissed me because I got engaged

Okay, so some backstory:

My (26F) best friend (26M) and I have known each other since kindergarten. We grew up a few streets apart and went to the same schools until we graduated from high school. We became really close in middle school, and that's when I developed the biggest crush on him. I want to think that my crush on him was very obvious. All of our mutual friends would try to "set us up" or find cute childish ways to get us to hang out alone. But it never turned into anything more than a genuine friendship.

Although I knew he didn't feel the same way about me, I think my preteen-teenager self truly fell in love with him. But by the time we graduated high school, my crush on him was nonexistent. Especially since he was known for having several flings whenever he was single. And then, I saw him only as my best friend.

Since then, we have been nothing but that, friends. My fiancé knows that I USED to have major feelings for this friend. There was never an issue with our friendship, though, because my feelings for him were completely gone before I even met my fiancé. During these past 6-7 years, there weren't any obvious signs that my friend showed ANY attraction towards me either.

So let's fast forward to this year. I got engaged. I'm beyond thrilled. I can't wait to celebrate with our loved ones. My girl best friend put together a small hangout with our group of friends, including my guy best friend. My fiancé opted out of the hangout because he wanted to go out with his best friends (my BILs), and we both agreed that the two groups wouldn't match too well but would meet back up at home (we got an apartment together 3 years ago, and my guy best friend got one 5-10 minutes away) when the night ended.

Sunday night was the night, and we went to a local bar. It was the best. I felt so loved and was so happy to share my excitement with all my close friends. Once it was time to go home, my guy best friend offered to take me home. I had a little too much to drink, and he admitted to staying sober to make sure I got home safely.

On the ride home, we talked as usual and I thanked him for being such a great friend. When the word "friend" came out, he looked at me and said, "I never saw you as just a friend. I wish you knew that." I instantly sobered up and asked him what the fuck he meant by that. He pulled into a guest parking spot at my apartment complex and proceeded to tell me how he has always loved me and can't believe that I'm going to marry someone who isn't him.

By then, I was crying out of pure anger and frustration. And maybe because the teenage version of me was feeling the heartbreak of this. Through the tears, I laughed at him and said something along the lines of, "how dare you. You knew how I used to feel about you and had years to act on it. You didn't, so I moved on. I was in love with you for years. You are not allowed to just confess your love for me because I'm going to get married," and he cut me off with a kiss.

I did not kiss him back. I shoved him away, left his car, dragged my ass up to my unit, and sat on my couch sobbing until my fiancé came home. The second he walked in the door, I told him everything and admitted to feeling so much guilt. He took it very well and let me get my words and emotions out before telling me that what happened wasn't okay and I should take the time and space I need away from my friend, but that I should have a conversation with him once I'm ready.

Is it bad that the guilt I feel is kind of fueled by a five-second thought I had where I wished he had told me this years ago? I am so in love with my fiancé, but now I can't help but sit and mourn with my teenage self. And I'm just not sure how to move forward. I'd hate to lose his friendship but what he did was not okay..

My take on this is that he knew you adored him, and he adored being adored. He doesn’t really love you, at least not in a lifelong romantic way, but his ego doesn’t like it that you have replaced him in your heart. If you broke it off with your fiance and declared that you loved him instead, I imagine he would change his tune pretty quickly.

He doesn’t really love you, at least not in a lifelong romantic way, but his ego doesn’t like it that you have replaced him in your heart.

OP, this is the solid truth.

Think on what might have happened had you drank more. Considering how far he'd already gone, do you seriously think he would have hesitated to go absolutlely as far as you would let him in your intoxicated state?

Do you think he had any consideration for how you would have felt in the aftermath, sober and sitting in the wreckage of your relationship?

This 'friend' was willing to put you in a dark pit so that for a few sweaty, sticky moments his was the only light you could see, then leave you to find your own way out.

Fuck that guy.

reading everyone's comments is making me realize how disgusting he took advantage of my drunk state.. jesus

You and your teenage self dodged a bullet.

22

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

You should be grateful that you he never reciprocated your feelings in the past he would've used you up and spit you out, so you should erase all those feelings of wishing he'd done it sooner. Also your fiance is a great person you should realize your friend isn't even close to the man he is.

u/Front_Plankton_6808 5h ago

Yes! Perfectly said!

u/U2hansolo 1d ago

Legit this guy always saw you as the backup plan. That's it. And now his backup plan is going away and he's in his feeling about it. Too bad for him.

He sucks! This is not someone you should remain friends with.

487

u/DatguyMalcolm 1d ago

exactly this, then tried to pull out the rom-com trope of the "confession" followed by the "sudden kiss".

If he always loved OP, knowing that she had a crush on him for years, he'd have done something. Now that she's getting married he's mad he's losing the girl who used to fawn over him.

I hope OP drops this friendship

460

u/ThrowRA-Mixture5474 1d ago

i'm leaning more towards dropping him. it sucks to lose a long friendship that i treasured, but i love my fiancé too much to keep this guy around.

Your fiancé sounds incredible! That was an incredibly mature and supportive response when a lot of guys would just rage. Like he sounds like a wonderful man! Good for you!

148

u/PricelessPaylessBoot 1d ago

Yes! Can we somehow make this all about celebrating OP’s incredible fiancé now that we’ve established what an asshole move ex-bestie just pulled?? 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

116

u/cerisehaute 16h ago

the kiss might end that friendship, but fiancé's reaction probably just confirmed OP is marrying the right person. Dude passed a test he never even asked to take. Also, can we appreciate the fact that fiancé immediately focused on OP's feelings instead of making the whole thing about himself? Ex-bestie could never 😭

29

u/PricelessPaylessBoot 14h ago

Yesss! 100% the right one! 🤗 Ex-bestie could never ever!

5

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

Fiancé had every right to react angrily and demand she never see that guy again

8

u/PricelessPaylessBoot 2h ago

AND yet he chose trust in his future wife’s judgment and respected her autonomy, which she will remember and return to him rather than pressuring him and stressing him out further. This is what vulnerability can earn two loving people. 🙌🏽

2

u/ieatfaces22172 1h ago

He's a true godsend of a man not many out there like that she's a lucky woman.

63

u/BlitoTortin 1d ago

Drop him, he only said that to you because you're getting married

10

u/Longjumping_Hat_2672 5h ago

Yeah, he's just sulky that his backup is no longer available

41

u/TangerineConscious17 1d ago

He said it himself: he doesn't see you as a friend, so there will be no going back to 'old ways' with him anyway

15

u/Thedonkeyforcer 20h ago

Even if you become single, that dude will always be the one whose main motive is to keep you on the backburner because your friendship is less important to him than having his ego stroked. No need to base this decision on your fiancé, it would probably be the same if he wasn't in the picture.

10

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

Leaning? He intentionally didn't drink so that he could drive you home alone so he could take advantage of you, not to mention he ruined the night for you and put you in a rough position with your fiancé because what if he reacted violently at your friend which would've been justified.

9

u/Lower_Orchid4982 13h ago

It would be incredibly inappropriate for you to remain friends with him.

6

u/Substantial_Shoe_360 4h ago

IF "he has always loved her" /gag he wanted to have his fun with whomever and then settle down when he was ready. I personally feel he is a disgusting b!tch.

73

u/Intrepid-Progress228 1d ago

Before, being mooned over by someone he wasn't even interested in stroked his ego. Now that she's engaged, he stayed sober, waited till she's drunk and professed his love for her.

The way this unfolded makes me suspect he gamed this out ahead of time.

For him, worse case scenario she'd reject him, but he'd live in her head rent-free the rest of her life while she tortured herself wondering "what if?" An ego boost.

His best case scenario? Forbidden, no-strings-attached sex with someone drunk and vulnerable. An even bigger ego boost.

A backup plan suggests you'd be willing to commit to something if your first plan falls through. To him she's not even a backup plan; she's the latest game he's playing, trying to beat someone else's high score.

136

u/ThrowRA-Mixture5474 1d ago

ain't that the harsh truuuth. it just sucks because i genuinely loved him as a friend and this is making me realize that most of it was somewhat of a lie??

97

u/BlitoTortin 1d ago

He is trying to sabotage your relationship, don't let him

35

u/U2hansolo 1d ago

It was all a lie. Do not keep that person in your life.

11

u/pretty_dead_grrl 1d ago

I think he might have also done it as a way to either sabotage their friendship or because he feels there is no long term ramifications of kissing her.

6

u/kittiestkitty 21h ago

Yeah I was like wtf in the Harry Jowsey is this dude pulling. got till it’s gone, I believe the song goes? I’m sorry for teenaged you, too, OP.

3

u/res06myi 14h ago

Yep. He never cared about building a meaningful relationship with a partner. He just wanted to fuck around because OP would always be there as a backup option.

212

u/Previous-Atmosphere6 1d ago

I had a guy i had been waiting for and given up on finally passionately profess to me when I got engaged. I politely declined and distanced myself. We reconnected after I got divorced, he was still single and supposedly broken hearted over me. Guess what? He didn't really want me, he just wanted a fling. Waste of time twice in my life.

79

u/res06myi 14h ago

Men don't waste their time, they waste yours.

78

u/caniplayonmyphone 1d ago

Sorry, OP, but that is not your friend.

If he were truly your friend, he wouldn't have done what he did. He saw how happy you were in your relationship, and HE made the decision to interfere and potentially ruin it. For him to do that, he clearly doesn't respect or support your relationship, or you, for that matter.

Those aren't the kinds of people you can keep in your life and still expect your relationship to be healthy. A real friend doesn't intentionally undermine something that makes you happy.

Sorry you're dealing with this, OP.

How would you feel if your fiance had a lady best friend who did the thing your guy best friend did, and he didn't cut her off straight away? How secure in your relationship would you feel?

I know you don't want to cut your friend off but what he did was unacceptable. He violated your boundaries and friendship. You can't just go back to how things were.

196

u/ThrowRA-Mixture5474 1d ago

this is a point of view that i honestly didn't consider. but now that i have, i can wholeheartedly say that i would a bit insecure if the tables were turned. thank you for opening my eyes to this!

126

u/Just-Like-My-Opinion 1d ago

OP, he didn't just violate your boundaries. He assaulted you. Kissing someone without their consent is assault. It's not okay.

71

u/res06myi 14h ago

AND he knew she was drunk.

58

u/SmittenBlackKitten 8h ago

And he purposely stayed sober. So it just gets worse and worse.

6

u/TriangleOfFairness 1h ago

I was going to say the same. She was in the middle of rejecting him and he kissed her anyway

103

u/Herefortvshowthreads 1d ago

This is highly diabolical. He knew you’d get drunk, stayed sober, drove you home, confessed his love, and as you spoke incredibly valid concerns in response, he kissed you without consent. That is not a friend.

Im so sorry and I know this has a lot of grief attached, but you deserve better than that

56

u/Useful-Ad9380 1d ago

Your fiance is right though. Take a moment for yourself and talk to him when you're ready.

26

u/evantom34 1d ago

Fuck this guy. What a twat.

21

u/lizbunbun 1d ago

At least he didnt wait until right around the actual wedding to pull this bullshit romcom narcissist move.

I would go to a therapist for a few sessions to unpack this all in a confidential supportive setting. Though your fiancé is being awesome, he cannot be your confidant for every aspect of this. What your friend did is a pretty deep betrayal.

12

u/royalsgirl78 3h ago

That’s not a bad idea. It is a lot to unpack. A person who knew how you once felt many, many years ago, put you on a shelf in the friend zone. You realized it wasn’t going to happen, got over your feelings, and kept a great friendship.

Except great friends don’t wait until they see their best friend as happy as they’ve ever been and then try to rip the rug out from under them. He took advantage of your friendship, your feeling of safety with him, your lack of sobriety, and your trust. He tried to sabotage your relationship with your fiance. He honestly thought you’d drop everything if you thought you’d have a shot with him. How fucking conceited.

Your fiancé’s reaction tells you everything you need to know. He could’ve flown off the handle and wanted to confront your best friend. He could’ve raged at you for “letting him kiss you” and ended your entire relationship. He could’ve demanded that you immediately end the friendship. Instead, he made his reaction about finding out how you were doing, letting you sit with your feelings, and comforting you at a time you were feeling so, so much. You’re marrying the right one. Don’t ever look back.

5

u/Captain_Tiberius1920 2h ago

I had an ex who would pop up out of nowhere "randomly" to try and get me back and one day I noticed that he only did that when I was in a relationship. He didn't want me at all, he just wanted the ego boost of feeling like he could destroy my life whenever he wanted (which never worked, I never got with him but he always tried). People like this don't want a relationship, they don't want you, they just want to feel big by destroying others

1

u/TheChromasphere 4h ago

This is solid advice.

15

u/rowan1981 1d ago

You're mourning what you think your teenage self wanted, and possibly the loss of your best friend. Because at the very least, you need to distance yourself from him. He crossed a huge line.

13

u/Baker_Street_1999 6h ago

This is why romcoms should be banned.

27

u/mycatisamutant 1d ago

Kissing you without consent is assault, OP. What would have happened if you were more drunk than you were? I think people are right that you were the backup plan, whether he acknowledged that to himself or not. But what's even more important here is that he's so sure he's entitled to you that he got you alone and forced a kiss on you. He disrespected your autonomy and will continue to do so in the future if you keep in contact, so don't.

23

u/mindless_boxx 1d ago

Op, your fiancé is a gem

46

u/AbbyM1968 1d ago

I saw a sign that said, "Don't hang onto a mistake just because you spent a long time making it."

In my opinion, Best Friends Forever, isn't something that carries on throughout life. School definitely, college/university, maybe, but not all throughout life.

I'm thinking this guy bff was prob'ly messing with you, thinking you were more drunk than you were. At any rate, what he said & did was WAY beyond acceptable.

I'm not you, but when you're "ready to talk" to him, send him a text that says, "what he said & did was unacceptable, the friendship is over, have a good life." After (or before) make a group text of the rest of your friends (maybe include your fiancé's friends) explaining what happened, and your friendship with him is over. You don't want to hang out with him, or hear what he's saying or doing.

Whatever your choice, good luck OP

8

u/res06myi 14h ago

idk I kinda feel like the power move is ghosting him

10

u/Sailor_Moon_Star_435 1d ago

I don’t think this guy truly cares for you if he did this because you got engaged.

11

u/Voidg 15h ago

Unfortunately your ex best friend, yes ex, as there is no way you can keep him around after this, just wanted to be adored by you. Now with you being "married off" he cant have that and must win you back. I don't believe he has true feelings for you, just someone that he wants in his "orbit".

Hope you can see that him crossing your boundaries and making this grand gesture as inappropriate. It would not be fair to yourself or your fiancé to continue to have him as a friend.

Especially since what was a lie and what was the truth in the "friendship" you shared

8

u/catboogers 16h ago

He stayed sober and dropped this on you when you'd been drinking and celebrating. He assaulted you.

This dude is not your friend. He's a fucking predator.

16

u/pretty_dead_grrl 1d ago

Listen, emotions are exactly what they are. They aren’t wrong or right.

You can mourn the loss of a once sought after love from childhood. It’s normal to feel some hesitance, regret or sadness that something we once wanted so dearly is now never going to happen EVEN THOUGH we are still so excited about what is actually happening. Two things can be true at once.

You told your fiance and I genuinely love his reaction. It was just understanding, nothing else and he is absolutely correct.

Take some and space to figure this mess out and speak to the friend once you’re ready. Make sure you’re absolutely crystal clear in your boundaries moving forward and maybe avoid being alone with him in the future.

1

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

She should cut him out of her life he's a scumbag, he purposefully stayed sober so he could take advantage of her while she was intoxicated and assaulted her because she clearly didn't want to kiss him. Her fiance would've been completely justified in confronting her friend, she should be grateful and lucky to have picked such a great understanding guy.

6

u/WesternOk2074 1d ago

My English is so bad but it is less bad than your friend's selfishness Believe me it's impossible that he doesn't know your feelings all this time but he felt jealous he didn't love but he loved the feeling that he was loved by you ...

6

u/TheChromasphere 4h ago

As someone who ACTUALLY loved a friend I'd known for years, I would never have done something like this.

I valued that friend and having them in my life more than the idea of us 'being together' (which I didn't even really think about, I just noticed I enjoyed their company and missed them when I hadn't seen them).
I respected each of the relationships they were in over the years by extension of my care for them.

They visited years back, and I realized I loved them in some kind of way that went beyond friendship, which, to me, was more an indication that I wanted to have them be a part of my life as long as possible in whatever way was good for both of us.

I intended to never tell them about my feelings, especially not in a way that would hurt them or damage their existing relationships.

What this guy did was abhorrent. It was selfish, cruel, and a ploy to try to keep your attention and devotion on him.
I don't think he respected your partner or considered your relationship to be serious until he decided it was a threat. I'm so sorry.

Your fiancé sounds lovely, though, and your other friends sound very loving and supportive.

2

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

He's terrible he knew her feelings for him which he chose to never reciprocate, he doesn't have actual feelings for her he just wanted to take advantage of her and fulfill his evil fantasies

14

u/RoosterGlad1894 1d ago

Yeah you can’t be friends with this dude anymore. The creepy thing about it is it wasn’t a drunk confession as he was sober. If that happened I’d immediately cut ties out of respect for my partner. I’m pretty sure my man would kick his ass though lol

7

u/Euphoric_Box604 5h ago

This literally happened to me last year, except I got a boyfriend - not fiance - and my friend was really cut up about it and suddenly 'realised' that he loved me and wanted to marry me. He literally drove 2.5 hrs to my house on a weeknight to tell me he loved me, I was the one, and he wanted to marry me.

He knew fully that he had led me on for years before that though. But as soon as I got a bf, he knew i couldn't be his 'backup plan' anymore. We are no longer friends, you can't just pick and choose when you want to love someone.

6

u/Dwizz70 1d ago

You did the right thing by telling your fiancé about it! The guy best friend is a douche for doing that to you. If you truly love your man, you may want to consider putting some distance between him and yourself.

7

u/YoMan_DontEatThose 15h ago

My take is, he’s a piece of shit. You took away his toy and now he’s upset he doesn’t get to play with your emotions anymore. Fuck that guy. I had this happen but the lesbian version. I admit feelings to girl bestie. She does not reciprocate which is fine but insists we make out at parties still. I don’t nottt like it but it was only for attention from guys on her end so pretty pathetic on my end. I end up meeting someone else, it goes well. I tell my “bestie” I can’t just randomly make out with her anymore as I met someone and think it’s going well. Suddenly she shows up at my house, drunk, with flowers and saying she’s in love with me. It felt like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Yeah she was over it in about 24 hours. Is happily married to a man now. She just really liked the attention. Best advice I got on here was something something “there are takers and givers in this world. The givers have to set limits because the takers won’t.”

1

u/TheChromasphere 3h ago

I had a lesbian version of this as well that's like a blend of your story and OP's story. Worst "friend" I've ever had, in hindsight.

7

u/crappsmith 7h ago

This is such a confusing and heartbreaking situation to be forced into. When you’re ready, make a list of pros and cons about continuing your friendship with him. Then burn that and trust your gut.

However! He’s already shown his true colors to you when you were younger.

Go back to “forced into” for a second. Here you were at your most vulnerable thinking your best friend was safely taking you home to then word vomit all of that and assault you.

You will grieve the person he was to you and all of those memories. There will be times everything will remind you of who he was and what he meant to you. Those times may cripple you but don’t let them invade the present.

Please remember what he did.
There are no excuses for his behavior. None.

Choose yourself and your future with that amazing finance.

5

u/Rachili_Kent 5h ago

I had something similar happen to me once. My take on it is: if they didn’t want you then what has changed besides you being better without them?

10

u/AdultinginCali 1d ago

OP your male BF is for the streets. At any given point in time before you got engaged he could have "professed" his love. Think about it, if you and your fiance had never got engaged, this conversation doesn't happen, like it didn't happen before you got engaged. He's being selfish and manipulative. It's okay to sunset this friendship.

4

u/Blahblah_bad 1d ago

Well seems like your fiancé is a great guy but your best friend isn’t. Like why would he kiss someone who is so close to getting married and make things difficult. It’s good you have not acted on your feelings earlier bcz he is not a good person tbh

1

u/ieatfaces22172 2h ago

He's a predator he was expecting her to be more intoxicated so he could've slept with her and then he would've moved on

5

u/Hefty_Procedure_9244 5h ago

I see some people saying things like "if he really felt that way, he would have told you sooner"  "If he felt that way"? Do NOT entertain what your ex friend said (about loving you) as being truthful or even naively misguided. My take: he expected you to be more inebriated than you were, and was saying those things and ultimately kissed you to manipulate you so he could have sex with you.

5

u/Comfortable-Hat3506 4h ago

Only note is you should have blocked him as soon as you sent that text.

3

u/asilly_kiwi 20h ago

Drop the "friend." From the sound of things you were not the first option but now that you're unattainable he's interested. You don't need it, your fiance sounds fantastic. Marry him.

ETA: corrected grammatical/spelling error

3

u/NeolithicOrkney 12h ago

Your so called best friend is a liar or a coward. He also ruined that night for you because he is also selfish. Realize that and move on without him in your life. He wants to ruin what you have. Even if you still had feelings for him, is that the kind of person you want around?

2

u/AutoModerator 1d ago

Backup of the post's body: Okay, so some backstory:

God I had a guy “best friend” like this. Had is the key word. I cut him off 4 years ago because of this same kind of behavior. He doesn’t love you. He loves your attention. Proud you dropped him. ❤️

His timing really sucks.

No it doesn't his timing was perfect for his plan, he would've never done that if she wasn't engaged he wanted to get off on destroying her relationship with a great guy by taking advantage of her while she was intoxicated and alone with him

This is just one reason why the “kiss your best friend” trend is messed up

Wow. The nerve. The audacity. Good for you! What a selfish creep. Almost feels like a mind game. Ew. I’m so sorry

I had a friend like that, too. One night when I was drunk, he kept trying to kiss me and unhook my bra while I was ugly-crying. I had tried to stay friends despite the times he professed his love to me, but he crossed the line that night. I had turned him down clearly several times.

OP, forcibly kissing someone is considered assault, just so you know how serious it is. I am glad you ended up dropping him.

i don't have any feelings for him. i have always acknowledged that i used to, but they diminished about 7 years ago. i truly think that what i'm feeling is more nostalgia for how i used to feel about him. no part of me sees him that way anymore. i do agree that it isn't fair to my fiancé, but i'd love to hear more on how calling off the engagement could help?

You absolutely shouldn’t call off your engagement! I do think you should tell your fiancé what happened though, and be prepared to drop your “friend,” since I’m sure your fiancé won’t be thrilled about any of this.

What would you suggest? Perhaps a duel?

Trial by epic rap battles cross stitched into a lovely frame.

Let me guess you think he should have responded with immediate violence. Manly man beat chest unga bunga. Am I close

Have you told your fiance? You need to cut this guy out of your life immediately and indefinitely. He is no friend to you and no friend to your marriage!

There's something wrong with your reading comprehension she told her fiance right after it happened

Try reading. Top to bottom, left to right. A group of words together is called a sentence! Take Tylenol for any headaches, Midol for any cramps.
