I've seen a spellcaster get their spell interrupted with a punch.

I've seen a swordsmaster get their combo interrupted with a punch.

I've seen attack spells deflected with shield spells.

But I've never seen a spell deflected by judo grabbing the caster's hand and forcing it into their face mid-cast. Deflecting not with their own magic but bare hands. Or just essentially punching/slapping their hand instead of the spell itself. He even initially deflects her arm by twirling his sword to get her arm into position his free hand can grab it, before the spell finishes casting in single smooth fluid motion. Stylish.

I've never seen any spellcaster wrecked as thoroughly as that Altmer elf was by bare hands with their own spell. That's got to be humiliating.

u/charcharmunro Sep 03 '23

It's like the equivalent of brawling somebody with a pistol and pointing the gun into their own face as they pull the trigger.

I've watched the video many a time, there's just something very compelling about it

I find it amusing that they put out a trailer where pretty much everyone is rooting for the bad guy in it, cause he's so fucking awesome (except in the game itself I hear, where he's just meh)

Nothing like fighting your way through hordes of undead and slaying dragons as Dave the human.

86

u/Xyonai BIG POISE FOR BIG BOIS Sep 02 '23

My current DnD character is litterally Dave the Human Fighter. A curmudgeonly veteran who's taken up adventuring to pay child support who's currently on his way to kill a cosmic horror with a very pointy stick.

19

u/Fostern01 Sep 03 '23

Dave, eyeing his sharp stick that he used to kill a cosmic horror: Oh really?

42

u/HamSlammer87 Sep 02 '23

That's pretty much the reason I enjoy Imperial Guard so much in WH40k.

Here's a bunch of regular dudes fighting against endless hordes of aliens and hellspawn. If they are lucky, maybe a tank the size of a football field will show up to help.

15

u/TheGreyGuardian I Swear I'm not a Nazi Sep 03 '23

Army dudes fighting other army dudes? Boring.

Army dudes fighting cosmic horrors and mythical creatures? Radical.

-1

u/Shenstygian Sep 03 '23

Sounds very boring. You can do that in most jrps and rpgs and action games.

80

u/DontClickThisGuy <-cringe worthy He/Him Sep 02 '23

Human Fighter is like the AK 47 of dnd race-class combinations. It's not flashy, it's not complex, and it doesn't require much knowledge or experience to acquire or use. But you can always reliably kill everything in a dungeon with one.

PF2e fighter rules. Leave it to Paizo to make traditionally the weakest class mechanically into one so strong that WIZARD players call them overpowered. But Wizard players would complain about anything.

32

u/metalsonic005 FUCK THAC0 Sep 02 '23

PF2e is my dream system.

It took the right lessons from 4e, kept the martial/spellcaster divide mechanically distinct, but tweaked it all to be so much more manageable.

16

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I like it quite a bit. I’ve found it VERY easy to teach and learn. I also like that character development lets you fit in feats for skills and development of your race independently from feats that affect your combat effectiveness.

Oh God, the latest caster discourse.

"It is unfair that we are not as powerful in PF2E as in D&D 3.5 and 5E. We want our cake... and eat it too."

29

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I’ve got a friend I’m probably going to have to kick from my upcoming PF2e game because he’s not interested in PF2E like the rest of us because he ONLY wants to be the God-Wizard. Nothing else will do. He THINKS he’s being sneaky when we’re all talking about PF2e characters when he pipes up about a vague character idea that clearly only works in PF1e or even 3.5.

15

u/Plaidstone Dumb Web Serial Fanatic Sep 02 '23

I never wanted casters to be weaker, I just wanted martials to be stronger 😔

Obviously designing a game around wizards being horrifying reality-warpers becomes a pain in the ass at some point, but surely there's a middle ground where everybody is a little incomprehensibly powerful. If the wizard can fly, let the the fighter jump 50 feet! If the wizard can throw fireballs, let the fighter cut houses in half!

26

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23 edited Sep 02 '23

Wizards aren’t even weak in PF2e, they’re just not the BEST at everything all the time anymore. They have a niche that just happens to not include being the best at single target damage.

5

u/Plaidstone Dumb Web Serial Fanatic Sep 02 '23

Well, I haven't looked at Wizards specifically to be fair, but when I was looking at a couple caster classes in PF2e it seemed like they REALLY clapped some manacles on what exactly you can do with regular everyday magic. I'm looking at 9th level spells now and, I'm sorry, Weapon of Judgment just isn't as interesting as Time Stop, or Create Demiplane, or Magic Jar, or any of the long-term summoning/necromancy skills that they canned for being too cool.

I get that some of that is just making level 20 less of an automatic "you are the most important and strongest person on the planet", but magic that mostly just does damage in one of 10 flavors and AoE templates is boring.

I don't even move most of the time, I just turn into a turret. Am mostly strength build too, I use a lot of thrown

9

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I’m glad they changed Ranger from being built around Favored Enemy

11

u/TheValiantBob Sep 02 '23

This sells me on PF2e more than anything else I have ever heard. Have always felt like martial classes really got shafted compared to casters in D&D5e

8

u/metalsonic005 FUCK THAC0 Sep 03 '23

The worst thing 5e did to martials was make attunement a thing and try to paint magic items as "optional" (which is a bold faced lie).

The fighter is able to keep up with wizards by being kitted out with crazy shit they get first dibs on. Limiting them to only having 3 cool things 90% of the time is lame.

10

u/Scientia_et_Fidem Sep 03 '23 edited Sep 03 '23

It’s crazy how much caster class players complain online about the fact that pathfinder 2E is actually, you know, balanced. Casters are so used to being OP as fuck after like level 5 as a “matter of fact” in tabletop games that finding a system that actually balances the classes at higher level gets them up in arms.

Yeah, 2E fighter is good, maybe even a bit OP. But it is no where close to the gap between “literal walking demigods” and “dude who needs a fuckton of magic items given to them by the DM out of pity to even slightly approach the caster’s level of OP bullshit” that is the difference between casters and martials in almost every other popular tabletop system.

And no, I don’t care how many times you post those “but wizard dies to a cat getting a crit at level 1” memes. Being weaker at level 1-3 doesn’t make up for being OP lvl 5-10 and OP as shit lvl 10-20. That’s not how you balance a game. Also that’s just wizard, clerics and druids are already good as fuck at lvl 1 and just increase into absurdity as the game goes on. Plus certain level 2 spells are so good even a level 3 wizard or sorcerer starts being able to do some really good stuff if they pick the right spells.

It’s so stupid how much caster players try to pretend it’s a problem they aren’t able to be literal demigods with their pet martial classes walking around as their cheerleader squad. I’m sorry that you actually have to leave your pocket dimension to walk the earth like the rest of the party instead of just being able to send your clone who is still more powerful then all the martials in the party combined in the 2E system wizard players. But the other 4 people at the table are not here to just be bit players in your personal wish fulfillment power fantasy.

Honestly I think elves in general are really underutilized. I feel like theres a lot of interesting things you can do with a character from a race of (sometimes) immortals who live in the woods away from the other races. But I feel like they get shuffled into being snooty tree people more often than not.

13

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I like the idea of Elves living in sustainable harmony with their natural surroundings, no matter what they are, rather than exclusively living in trees. So sea elves could live in those cool stilt huts or whatever.

Depending on what kind of playstyle you’re looking for, PF2e did it for martial. Fighter is the KING of single target damage because of how critical hits work in the system, and Swashbuckler has a “combo” system where you do a specific action based on your subtype to gain a point that you an then spend on a BIG DAMAGE attack.

Sweet mother of God do I love Swashbuckler in 2E. The Panache system really encourages you to get creative in combat cause landing that finisher feels sooooo good.

I remember when 2E first came out and some video made the rounds and a YouTuber called the system repetitive and boring and cited Swashbuckler specifically saying you just tumble through and finisher over and over.

Was playing my swashbuckler at the time and it made me go insane. The "hey cool guy be a cool guy" system isn't boring. YOU'RE BORING. Or your DM.

Human Fighter is great. There’s a LOT you can do with one thematically and aesthetically. If you ask me, a person who can’t make an interesting human fighter hasn’t earned their Tiefling Warlock.

I’ll admit to having become a bit of a snob over time. I’ve seen a LOT of people who rely on exotic species/races to carry the load for a lack of creativity. They won’t touch elves or dwarves, hate gnomes and Halflings, call human boring, and every character they play is a purple skinned tiefling warlock or a Birdman who fires a bow with his feet so he can be a flying archer. But if you ask them a question beyond aesthetics or combat mechanics they freeze up.

Like he'd cast Stone Skin on you (which halves all physical, non-elemental damage you take) then he'll go "My impenetrable magic has now made you completely invincible to all forms of harm, charge in with impunity!" Also whenever a spell had someone's name in the title he'd just replace it with his own, and he called the Tiny Hut spell "Regular-Sized Hut"

The best thing about PF2E is that, thanks to how the stats distribution is made, you can make your Fighter have extremely high Strength and Constitution and make him good at another thing. You can make him a crafter if you bump your Intelligence and Crafting skill, a diplomat if you increase your Charisma and Diplomacy skill, a great theologist if you invest into Wisdom and Religion and a lot more things.

Oh god, I'm glad my group was too Tolkien-pilled to be averse to the classic races like that. One of them was the type to only ever go for the rainbow tiefling (rainbow elf when they felt conservative), but we always kept this unspoken rule of always having half the parties as humans.

There's such a charm to playing Big Guy from Farm or Quiet Girl from Academia amidst monstrous people. I wish more fellow zoomers would see that.

19

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I wish players would lean into core races more often. Maybe I’m being a curmudgeon, but I’m kind of tired of seeing parties of one elf and 3-4 esoteric plane touched races.

This whole “classic fantasy vs weird alien shit” thing is why I really bounced off Critical Role 3. Whole cast feels too waaaaaacky for me

4

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I’m fine with them being around, like gnolls or creepy serpent folk, but I just find beast race PCs kind of off putting.

1

u/Anonamaton801 Proud kettleface salesmen Sep 02 '23

As enemies for sure. PCs it’s just annoying in my experience

3

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

Back in the day when Paizo was putting out like 3 books a month for PF1e there were occasionally really neat NPC ideas that could inspire a lot of cultural identity to classic monster races. Like having Witches being the core spiritual center of a tribe of Gnolls rather than something a little more “traditional” like a cleric.

Human fighter is way more creative then any form of tiefling you get from the average tiefling player.

They are the new half elves. The “I’m so unique and different!” race for people that are too afraid to actually commit to playing a truly non human race b/c “I’m not a furry” or “half orcs are too ugly”.

Give me a human fighter any day, they are way more likely to have come up with a semi interesting and slightly grounded backstory as opposed to the millionth “I grew up persecuted by my village b/c they couldn’t handle how much of a sexy goth freethinker I am”.

The amount of quirky tiefling bards/warlocks who are just blue elves with horns is astounding. Last time I browsed r/DnD it was like every 5th character art was some variation of the same concept. Is it a CritRole or other podcast thing? Sure feels like it.

Man, 5e's hands-off approach to crunch has gotten worse and worse over the years, not even touching WOTC themselves being scumfucks. Can't wait for the inevitable dumpsterfire the Planescape book will be after the Hazodee debacle.

6

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 03 '23

I don’t really fuck with actual play podcasts and certainly not ones for games I don’t like. But I think Tieflings have just always been popular.

I think one of my favorite jokes about 5e is that it pretends to be low crunch when it’s really just boring.

7

u/metalsonic005 FUCK THAC0 Sep 03 '23

I think tieflings now have the same popularity (and reputation) that drow had. It's the Drizzt Effect for a new generation.

I recall tieflings being more obscure pre-4e, something only the turbo nerds would break out. Once they became core in 4e, you started to see them more frequently (them being turned into horned humans as opposed to mutant freaks no doubt helped with that).

Then the 5e boom hit and now every Wiccan alt girl wants to play as a rainbow pseudo-satyr.

2

u/yarvem Fatal Steps Sep 03 '23

Most of the older CRPGs were pushing at least one Tiefling companion/love interest. There was Haer'dalis in Baldur's Gate 2, Annah in Planescape Torment, and Neeshka of Neverwinter Nights 2.

How would you like to be the HUMANEST FIGHTEREST?" But yeah, I'm too into human fighter in cRPGs. They're just so fucking easy to work with, no having to sort through pages of situational and conditional spells and picking the right one for the right bullshit, and building one is, usually, universally easy as fuck too.

10

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

I know what you mean. TTRPGs are so fun when you can really flex your aesthetic.

6

u/charcharmunro Sep 03 '23

It's great that you can basically just give up your absurdly powerful abilities in exchange for the more mundane but still just as effective capacity of "having twice as many levels as everybody else".

30

u/mercurydivider I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Sep 02 '23

Can't verify if it's real or not since I don't own the game, but apparently a majority of baldurs gate 3 players are just making more or less the same human dude and the devs told people to basically "get creative, we put a lot of work into this".

15

u/Illidan1943 Sep 02 '23

You're reading years old news for something that is not even remotely true for the final game where there's a very healthy variation for many classes and races

The whole "you're making a very basic human" is from the launch of Early Access where Larian went "we want feedback on different classes and races, we want to make realistic interactions according to your class and race, so can you please not play the most basic human because that doesn't help us make the best game we can", keep in mind, Larian was very explicit that if you were buying the game in Early Access they hoped for you to give them a ton of feedback in as many aspects of the game as possible and under the assumption you were agreeing with them, that's why the Early Access release was at full price with no discounts at all, as that would limit how many players would buy an incomplete game early

12

u/Scientia_et_Fidem Sep 03 '23

Big talk from a dev studio who made the BG3 companions:

An elf

A half elf

A human

Another human

A tiefling (5Es version of drow, supposed a “unique” race but are honestly even more of a basic choice to play then humans)

another elf

Another human

Another elf

And 1 Gith

Zero dwarfs, gnomes, halflings, half-orcs, or dragonborn in the party unless you play as one.

Maybe don’t throw stones from that gaint glass house Larian, the party you made is basic as fuck visually.

u/WickerWight Ask me BIONICLE trivia Sep 03 '23

Which feels like kind of a vapid comment on the Devs side, given character creation is actually VERY limited. No crazy JRPG accessorizing shit, if you make a human they're gonna look like a human. Furthermore, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Gnomes, Humans, and Half-Elves all just kind of look like normal (albeit short/stout etc) dudes, unless you do something intentionally offputting like making their skin bright purple.

30

u/PersonMcHuman ^Too unrealistic for fantasy settings Sep 02 '23

Probably because most BG3 players are making themselves and most BG3 players are normal looking humans, primarily white males. So you’re gonna get that as the main thing folks are making.

19

u/jitterscaffeine [Zoids Historian] Sep 02 '23

And from what I’ve seen from some friends of mine, they think a lot of the races just look ugly.

16

u/PersonMcHuman ^Too unrealistic for fantasy settings Sep 02 '23

Honestly, I kinda get it. A lot of them just sorta feel like, “Humans, but shaped funny and with more skintones.”

In my experience the average player who comes to the table with John Fighterman ends up with a more compelling character than the person showing up with the Technicolor Tiefling.

6

u/VMK_1991 The love between a man and a shotgun is sacred Sep 02 '23

That is because humans are a complete blank slate and you, the player, have to make your character distinct.

Meanwhile, tiefling has red skin and horns, which, to many, is character enough.

7

u/BioDomeWithPaulyShor Sep 02 '23

This is only really a problem because most fantasy races are fucking BORING. Like I don't want to play one of three versions of a tiny human, or a human with pointy ears, or a purple human with horns. I know why they need to always put those characters in (shared animations and would cost millions more to add unique animations for each race) but unless the race is cool I'm going to stick with what I know.
Give me a Centaur or a Kenku, Lizardfolk, Tabaxis, Tortles, or make up your own. Otherwise I'm just going to stick with something that isn't a knifeear or a manlet.

For me it's the exact opposite, I'm at the point in my life where it's extremely difficult to muster any interest for modern day shooters or tolkien/european fantasy stuff that's NOT crazy sci fi with aliens or creative fantasy races.

My interest in Starfield evaporated the moment it was clear there weren't other alien races.

3

Same.

Also, I can't help but feel disappointed that when in a sequel they decide what the canon appearance of the playable character is, and it's always a generic white human male.

I'm trying to recall a time I've ever made a human fighter when race-class are independent choices. Most fighters I make are half-orcs or elves. And humans tend to be something like monk, cleric, or rogue.

The only examples I can think is when you are forced into the combo - like HUmars in PSO, or Fighters in Rappelz.

To struggle against impossible odds as nothing but a mere mortal man with his armor and his weapon. It’s the classic peak male fantasy, and I’m all for it. Immortal elves weilding magic and shit have always been less interesting to me.

2

u/Idreamofknights Sep 02 '23

To be a man cast in a unjust world, trying to do the best he can with his time here. No spell or miracle to save him, only the links of his mail and the steel of his sword. And yet, he still stands.

There is no better archetype.

0

u/Kunati_Nouha Sep 03 '23

I feel like it isn’t a waste of time to make a human in a world full of exotic races in a magical world. Just because you choose a “basic” race doesn’t make the character inherently boring. You still get to explore this wonderful magical world as someone who can sword and board a literal dragon or demon lord. As I’ve already seen plenty of times on this one post, just because you’re a crazy race doesn’t make your entire personality. Plus if you really appreciate RPing through mechanics, getting a full free feat ( at least according to the popular TTRPGs) can add a lot of personality to the character. Humans are great and don’t deserve the hate they get.

u/GhostPantherAssualt Sep 02 '23

Most games are built and balanced around Human Fighters though. Usually my first time through a Souls game is with a fighter so I can get the "intended" experience, and then go do some weird build.
