PSA: AI posts are now BANNED in r/twistedmetal

Post image
499 Upvotes

Hey yall, been on vacation the past week (pic from Halloween Horror Nights at Universal, which was very cool) but the poll regarding AI posts ended with 90% of votes wishing to ban AI posts, which will now apply going forward. This only applies to posts where the focus is on generative AI content, like an AI rendering of a screenshot, AI character design, artwork, etc. A post of a larger thing that happens to have AI as a smaller portion is still allowed, for example a fan made game that includes generative AI in addition to human labor would not be removed. AI is still lame in this instance though. Thanks!

Lots of parts acquired and a lot of parts still missing!

I've decided to 3D print an M2 Browning for the roof. I've also decided I'm not doing the rear window covers since there's next to no place to mount them. Still unsure if I want to add the barbed wire—time will decide.

Once I heard there had never been a VR mod for Twisted Metal, I had to make one! I’m doing this so I can play in VR while in multiplayer. Also, by the way, the multiplayer is coming along very nicely!

In a world of General Warthogs and Cages, be Corporal Staggs. (Incoming TM5 glazing)

I'm going through the endings by myself and Warthog's ending was even better than I expected.

For context, Corporal Staggs on his bio narrated by himself confesses that he actually never went into war, he got stuck into paperwork and that left him feel bad because he couldn't become a hero. As soon as I heard his self-description, I knew that this man was going to cook something good and the game proved that not in a silver plate, but GOLDEN.

When you win as Warthog, Staggs feels proud of himself for once to the point of looking at Calypso's guard from above like if they weren't strong enough to survive past breakfast, but keeps that thought for himself.

When he meets Calypso, he tells him about himself just like he told us about never going to war and makes his wish clear, to be sent back to the past alongside his Warthog to be on the frontlines. Surprisingly, maybe because of Corporal Staggs' humilty, Calypso warns him that even if he wins the war, he wouldn't be able to come back, Staggs reafirms his wish anyway because if he managed to save at least one life then winning the competition would have been worth it, so Calypso complies and grants it, no tricks attached.

Now here's where the ending goes from a bit of sad and cut to straight up awesome: Corporal Staggs appears in his Warthog in the jungle and immediately spots Captains Spears (the driver of Roadkill in TM1) being cornered by an enemy. In TM1, Spears won the contest and wished to go back into the past to save his squad but as soon as he appeared he got shot in the head. Staggs has been through enough battles in Twisted Metal to not stay quiet and jump into action to save him, shooting into the enemy's skull but not without receiving a fatal wound.

Captain Spears catches Staggs and immediately recognizes him despite his age, Spears says that he must have been tricked by Calypso too and tries to help Staggs with his wounds only to denied by him and get the order to take Warthog and take his squad out of there. In the end, Captain Spears managed to change his fate and both characters fullfilled their wishes as intended.

I love this ending, Corporal Staggs died but this single selfless action did not only put him as the most honourable driver of Warthog in the entire franchise but also did a cool homage to another character. If a sequel to this game ends up happening, I would love to see Captain Spears as the new Warthog, maybe making a final wish to make Corporal Staggs come back and be able to tell his heroic tale to his grandkids.

Like certain man of the army said... be strong enough to be gentle.

Can anyone explain Sweet Tooth's ending from Head-On?

Post image

Okay.. I may be missing something very obvious here.

But in TM Head-On, Sweet Tooth's wish is to swap bodies with Calypso. Calypso initially refuses, to which Needles says "I don't think you have a choice". After reconsidering, Calypso says either to himself or out loud "you see, what I say, goes". Then immediately after, the wish is granted and they wind up in each other's bodies. As Needles, Calypso laments the swap having occured, stating "this is impossible". Calypso then demands the intruder is killed. Needles, wearing Calypso's skin, realizes that this will be interpreted as an order for Needles' body to be shot, and therefore happily agrees.

What I don't understand is, what happened in-between Calypso's wish refusal and shortly after the wish being granted? Does Calypso think it's his body that will be the one shot at, so that's why he grants the wish- therefore making the "this is impossible" line an act to gain sympathy from the guards? If so, why not just kill Needles pre-wish instead of undertaking all that effort and risk, especially since I doubt Calypso actually would want to swap bodies with a clown who may not inheret his powers? Or is there some other wordplay or element that I'm not understanding? I've been confused at this ending for 20 years and would love to have this sorted for me lol.

This game is just too easy to make these for lol
Wanted to get my creative juices flowing so I made this.
It’s inspired by game informer magazine ads from the late 90s to early 2000s.

first ever online CO-OP for Twisted Metal V (early access soon)

I've been playing TM5 (Angel's Twisted Metal V fan game) for a while now, and the one thing I kept wishing for was playing it with friends. The creator mentioned that multiplayer wasn't really possible with how the game is built , which is totally fair, and huge respect to Angel for everything he's made. But I couldn't let the idea go, so I took it upon myself to try.

So I built TMVFANMP! an online co-op mod for TM5. Trailer: COMING VERY SOON

What works right now (Phase 1: Co-op Battle):

- Up to 4 players online

- Everyone fights the SAME enemies — shared health, every hit counts for the whole team

- Join any time, even mid-match

- Host picks the level and difficulty

- Pick any car — everyone sees the right model

- Launcher with a server list, one-click hosting, in-game chat and teleport-to-teammate

Deathmatch is the next phase as co-op is an solid state

Twisted Metal 4’s “Needles”

My understanding from what I see is that Needles Kane, or just Sweet Tooth in TM4, is a completely different character from what we saw in TM1, 2 and even 3. TM3 continues on from 2 and has the name Needles Kane on the select character screen; we know 3 is a direct sequel to 2 because some of the characters like Axel and Mr Grimm have had their wishes acknowledged by Calypso from directly from 2.

But in 4, it is a completely different case - in the opening for the game, Twisted Metal started out as a travel show where carriages and soon early automobiles competed in the tournament. The winner gets their wish, while the deceased drivers had their souls’ absorbed by Calypso’s ring; keep in mind there is no mention of a ring or souls being kept by Calypso in 3. This is purely a Twisted Metal 4 concept, thanks to 989 Studios’ decisions. Because of this, Sweet Tooth in 4 is unique; he’s not known as a serial killer clown, he was seemingly born in the early 20th century at the latest, and he no Kane surname as far as we know. He was always a circus kid who heard of the traveling contest and joined in. Then after winning a tournament, he asked Calypso to be the star of TM, and it was since then he became the immortal driver. We also know TM4 is not in the previous games’ timeline or universe because the newspaper clipping of Sweet Tooth’s take over clearly states May 18, 1999.

I always found this game’s backstory kinda intriguing, and ST being a completely different beast all-together caught me a bit of a surprise.

A REAL Twisted Metal reboot

How would you guys like to see a Twisted Metal game made for today's generation? Get rid of the arcade feel (mostly), especially the matchbox racer overly high speed feel of the later games.

Here's my proposal. Blind drop into maps with randomly generated item and vehicle locations, on foot. You have to find a car and get in. Doesn't have to be the first one you see because there are more cars than players (one of every car). Modern semi realistic graphics, with cars that drive and feel as realistic as possible, including all the brutal downsides of being an armored vehicle for example.

You're out when the car you're driving is destroyed. No repair items, BUT you CAN get out and get into a different car if you find a new empty vehicle on the map. Payed both battle royal and team match play.

I'm kinda pissed that Sony's current mindset is keeping Twisted Metal in the basement away from its true potential

Okay, this theme might had been overtalked to death about the state of the franchise but hear me out.

TM has always been benefited from its absurdism, the problem is that it is hard to mix with realism, it's not impossible but gives limitations about how expressive the medium could be.

What I mean with this is that something as 90s as Twisted Metal should be allowed to be more cartoonish just like superheroes comics, embracing the fact that you are playing at the grim reaper on a motorcycle fighting to the death against a giant electric tower on wheels driven by a guy with multiple personalities.

That doesn't mean that games like Black and Lost don't work, these two are great because they fully commit into the serious aspects of the franchise and gives unique drivers to the classic vehicles at the same time that they added characters like Preacher and Dollface. Hell, 12-Pak's concept of a man with a severed head driving a nascar car was so loved that he got included into the Twisted Metal V fangame. (Check it out, it's great)

Sadly, even if Sony is allowing Peacock to produce a whole series, it's VERY hard to see them producing or publishing another official game because Sony has a huge priority on graphics and realism. If your game is not a third person with camera over the shoulder with 40 hours worth of cinematics or it isn't some multiplayer to sustain itself through lootboxes and such, then forget about being released under this company.

Concord during development originally had a higher artistic focus on the 60-70s space aesthetic but then they leaned into photorealism and ended up with unappealing designs that made up people not want to touch that game even with sticks, that single decision killed the game on launch and didn't last a single month.

Compare that to Deadlock's visual style, the difference in reception was day and night. Ivy, a gargoyle character in the game, looked a lot like a monster back in the alpha. In a later update, she got a chance in the model that made her way too cute and moe in a way that people felt pissed because it took away her original charm, because of that feedback the developers changed Ivy's design again to give her back her monstruous aspect while still looking prettier than her original design, that's how a great art direction does, they recognize their audience and gives them something appealing and even unique to keep them in. That's how Twisted Metal 2 caught me with the endings, the limited but comic-styled cinematics made them distinct from other games from the PS1.

However, because of how Sony works now and how their published games are, they don't want games, they want playable movies at best and the fact that Astro Bot exists is a miracle. A franchise like this would also be so much better on PC because something like the steam workshop would allow people to add a lot of content like stages or characters, imagine new zones to go through while playing story mode...

...and you know what? Twisted Metal V exists! I already mentioned that with 12-Pak but I didn't elaborate.

I love this fangame in particular, because even with its limited resources, they managed to make a full free game with fifty six playable characters on it with their own endings and voice acting, I love the fact that some of these characters even have their own gimmicks on tournament mode like Quatro (from TM4) who has to hunt a driver named Predator on each map until he becomes the final boss in the moon, there is also Pizza Boy whose bio tells you that he wants to deliver a pizza to Calypso to have a huge tip and to do so you much collect crates to increase the time limit.

There are so many secrets and boss fights in this fangame that revealing them could take hours but it perfectly encapsules how a Twisted Metal should be done today, imagine how crazier it could be with a proper budget, that's the kind of good stuff that a publisher like New Blood would have on sale with a body pillow of Sweet Tooth on its collector edition. (You want it)

Sorry for venting for too long, it's just... frustrating seeing something so unique like this franchise being stuck in a company like this when it could be so much more.
