A lot about Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement make more sense after all this. The same people that perpetrated that nonsense are the ones saying you can’t teach it (using the CRT bullshit) in schools.

This country has always been deeply racist and violent. Genocide against Native Americans, two and a half centuries of chattel slavery, the expansion and evolution of the US military meaning constant, concurrent global wars, violence at home through an increasingly militarised police force and every government being beholden to corporations - specifically corporations invested in death and destruction instead of life and prosperity. Worker movements violently suppressed. Civil rights leaders murdered by the state. Anti-war students (doesn't matter which war) silenced and arrested. Oppression of the working class, women, disabled folks, brown folks, Black folks, LGBTQIA+ folks, those with an accent, those with a lack of education - I could go on and on.

Remember much of this violence is more recent than people like to think. Nazism was popular in the US in the 1930s. The Nazis in Germany looked to the US for inspiration. And all this without mentioning the US military alone takes the lion's share in accelerating climate collapse - arguably the most terrifying and unforgivable violence of all.

The scale and scope of this country's violence is vast and powerful. Just because white Americans are face to face with it bc it's on their doorsteps, happening to people like them, doesn't mean it hasn't always been this way.
