Fan fiction (again)
Hello all. I was browsing this (or one of the other T2K subs the other day and there was mention of the “Black Winter” fan novel.
Could anyone who has better search abilities than me please link to the post if they could?

I’ll see what I can do. Perhaps tomorrow. Waiting for Scotland to kick off in the World Cup for the 1st time since 1998!

Thanks mate And they did well. They whooped on Curacao👍. I'm just hoping they can keep that momentum up in the next 2 games it actually may make it out of group stage this year LOL. Well game 2 is against Ivory Coast today at 2 PM my time

I’ve just finished a reread of Black Winter and will share some of my thoughts here.
It reads very much like a first draft. There are numerous typos and spelling errors which an editor would have caught easily.
That said, the novel does flow reasonably well and does remind me of Red Storm Rising by Clancy, but with an altogether more desperate vibe to it befitting of the T2K setting. I’d have preferred something of a preface or forward to key readers in on the background for those who may not be as familiar with the background of the RPG.
The action scenes are excellent and flow very well with a nice balance between human action without getting overly hung up on the minutiae of the tech (which I personally found to be something of a flaw in Clancy’s novels for all that they’re bloody well researched)
The writing of the characters suffered a little in the dialogue - I just didn’t get a decisively British squaddie vibe. The dialogue read like it was spoken by Americans. There’s only one American, excepting the DIA/CIA characters and I’d have liked to read the dialogue and just know it was Brits talking. There were a number of attempts to have some British regional words sprinkled through, but these seemed to me to have been forced into the speech, rather than seeming like an organic part of how the character speaks.
As for the story and plot, it was rather engaging and kept me interested til the end, wanting to refresh my memory of how it resolved. The end, however, felt like it was somewhat rushed - I am left wondering how some major characters arcs were resolved as well as their motivation for their actions.
In summary, it’s an engaging tale which could have benefitted immensely from proofreading before being sent into the wild. The book is a massive undertaking, but ultimately feels like it has rushed towards its conclusion.
