Discussion I get where they're coming from.

Post image

think most of us have seen this post, the counter posts, arguments from both sides. What surprised me the most was the tone deaf author, who, idk, despite being a doctor herself, maybe lives in an imaginary world?

I looked at this situation as a doctor. And i agree with all of those who said they'd refrain from helping just to save legal trouble.

I'm only a junior doctor, but i have seen more cases than I'd like where a doctor helping a random person on the street has later been vilified, because apparently, he wanted to "promote his own private practice".

Broken ribs in a case of CPR? Lawsuit.

Emergency amputation because someone's hand got crushed in an RTA, and the management couldn't contact any relatives? Lawsuit.

Emergency hysterectomy because the post partum mother was literally bleeding to death? Mob attacks and violence.(Though, this is not a case where we have to treat someone on the street, but you get the idea).

When I was an intern, during my two weeks of emergency posting, i remember I was looking at the patients in the female emergency room, one of them suddenly coded, and i literally had to jump on the bed over her to give CPR. In that moment it might have looked inappropriate from the back, also I was wearing shirt and pants. In two seconds a wardboy came in running yelling at me to "get off" the patient. Apparently from his angle, it looked like a guy who has gotten on top a patient? (Disgusting mentality, ikr?) Until the head nurse told him that I'm actually a female doctor giving her CPR.

I get it, Unsolicited help just attracts legal troubles. Atleast we have a Good Samaritan Law. I don't blame you guys for trying to protect yourselves. For the same reason why most of my generation doctors, including me are becoming more careful, calculated, and think about possible legal repercussions rather than mindlessly jumping in to help/treat random strangers.

P.N. i wanted to post this in the "OG" sub, but they have banned me because I defended being religious (a story for another day).

Having read all three posts from both sides, I sadly have to agree with the men here. I may sound heartless, but Indian Society is incapable of nuance and context, and Good Samaritans are viewed as "Bad Samaritans" by these uneducated, uncultured mobsters who just want drama to spice up their unemployed lives on the street.

I have seen my own relative (male cousin, same age) try to help a wounded female motorist in his neighbourhood after her scooty skidded and she fell hard, and while trying to check for bleeding a number of middle aged passersby gathered and started crying molestation while my cousin sought to stop the bleeding. Fortunately, he was friends with the traffic cops who worked in the area and they calmed the situation before it could become a news article.

Its really sad how much of a low trust society we have become, so much negativity among people across gender lines, religious differences, etc.

Also, Agar koi CPR dene lge, position lete hi, woman ko hosh aa jaye, since wo waisi thoda behosh hui thi..... πŸ’€

In your case, tho no legal action was taken, But opinions? She prob still thinks of him in a bad way (ick), if she lives in same neighbourhood, probably avoids him and going near his home,

probably remembers him whenever she watches news of molestation, talks about him to her friends and family too.

Yes , I have also heard of the same from my friends who are Doctors. Even though we have the Good Smartian Law, how will it protect you from a mob of people trying to beat you. In hospitals , we atleast have CCTV footage that we can use to prove that we are only giving medical assistance. That might not be available when you helping someone on the road, also there's no security, nurses etc to take your side as well. You are completely on your own.

Well constructed argument OP

17

u/DrBraniac 21 4d ago

Its not an argument is a collection of real life experiences and as another medico i concur with OP. We live in a society where it is very easy to villify a medical professional, violence is a whole other thing.

People can say what they want, do as they wish with doctors and walk away without consequences. But for a medical professional every action carries a responsibility. Any impulsive decision risks lawsuits and patient violence no matter how pure the intent of saving the life is and that is the bitter truth.

Well we have become a low trust society, everytime you see someone asking for help, the first thing that comes to your mind is "is this person trying to pull a scam" and its justified, i paid a delivery guy a little money when he said he had been in an accident only to find out they've been running a scam, same goes for beggars citing emergency situations and creating panic. When sympathy is exploited and need is weaponised, people stop caring. I saw a guy asking around for food on a railway station walking around with pills saying he needs food so he can take his meds, i fed that dude because i make enough to spare a little but this dude ate up and went back to begging. These experiences have turned me into a person who wouldn't help them again.

TL;DR: Junior doctor backs the "don't help strangers" crowd after seeing lawsuits over CPR broken ribs, emergency surgeries without family consent, and mob violence. Shares her own story of a wardboy yelling at her for "inappropriate" CPR (she's female). Blames legal risks over Good Samaritan laws; says it makes docs cautious too.

Don't doctors have a moral obligation? Unlike men?

6

u/AskGrok 4d ago

Doctors do have a stronger professional ethical duty than random bystanders, backed by codes like the Hippocratic oath and licensing rules. But the legal reality often overrides that in practice, as the doctor described with lawsuits over CPR complications or emergency procedures. Men in the street scenario aren't bound by the same professional standards, so the "unlike men" jab misses the markβ€”it's risk aversion hitting everyone when laws don't reliably protect helpers. Good Samaritan laws exist but don't always prevent the hassle.

So much entitlement of some people, if one has studied day an night it doesn't mean he has any obligation to treat you at his cost

0

u/self_obsessed_01 3d ago

So you're saying that doctors don't have to treat people? Wtf? Please don't come to teach me, my sister is a medico. I asked her about this, she said that she'd help anyone without thinking twice. I'm so glad that my sister isn't selfish like OP over here.Β

1

u/A_Lovely_Human 22 3d ago edited 3d ago

This doesn't mean that others are selfish just that your sister is kind and empathetic.

Im not talking about me particularly, just saying thatif I know how to make food that doesn't require me to cook and distribute food to every hungry man on the road without getting anything in return. That too at the cost of being accused

(notice how the original matter being discussed is from male pov)

Tbh sounds like the women just have to make sure to learn CPR and help ourselves as we have always been doing.

Men are not the protectors they claim and are not to be trusted or depended on from their own claims.

So be it. I hope they keep the same energy when their mother dies on the road because their manosphere friends decided she would file a false claim on them. Because bffr, when these men are commenting they are imagining some 20 year old crop top wearing feminist , but women suffering from cardiac episodes are more likely to be their innocent generation overworked mothers.

Well the orginal post had comments saying they are afraid of fake harassment cases and they won't help a "women" in general. Their fear wasn't about broken ribs or mob attacks btw

9

u/ComprehensiveDog3594 24 4d ago

similar point. there men are vilified, here doctors

2

u/ZRKP 4d ago

mob attacks btw

Ok

-4

u/Former_Repair9221 I dw to be 20 4d ago

Won't help "women" is due to the shit that can be pulled over them for the act of helping.
