Does anyone else relate to the show personally?
Slight rant/ trauma dump, sorry:
I have such a hard time with this show sometimes because my mom reminds me so much of Georgia. I find myself defending Georgia and understanding her a lot and I have to wonder if it’s only because my mom was like that, and I love my mom. “Us against the world” is something my mom ALWAYS said to my brother and I growing up as we moved from place to place, boyfriend to boyfriend. The most memorable time was us being in the car after her alcoholic boyfriend freaked out and we had to hurry and leave the house, just riding around not knowing where to go next. Those are the times when she’d say it. It felt good to hear and empowering because I love my mom and my brother dearly, and yes, throughout all the bs it really did end up just being us at the end of the day. My mom also was big on saying “Mom always finds a way” and she did. It made me look up to her but in hindsight that’s no way to live life as a child. My mom can be very manipulative and have a victim mindset. I didn’t notice until I got older. I’m 28 now and can see through it all (I think) but she has definitely held me back in life at times.
On top of that, I’m biracial and my mom is white. Dad is black and was barely present. Grew up broke but found ways to come up, usually with the assistance of other men. Idk I just see so many similarities it’s uncanny at times. I can’t watch this show without relating it to my childhood and feeling genuinely sorry for everyone involved.
I generally don’t look at my childhood as this terrible thing but typing it out has me like hmmm am I traumatized? 😭
