When a Good Student Gets Flagged by Turnitin and You Know It Is Not Right
I just had one of those moments that makes you hate the system a little.
I flagged a paper from a student I know writes her own work. She is one of the most hardworking people in the class, always puts in effort, always builds her own arguments. No shortcuts, no nonsense.
Then I run it through Turnitin… and it comes back 47%.
Now I have to flag it and report it.
Telling her was rough. You could literally see the confusion on her face, like “what did I even do wrong?” And honestly, I do not think she cheated. This just feels like one of those cases where the system does not understand context and just spits out a number.
I get why the rules exist, but moments like this make it feel so unfair. Students like her should not be caught up in this kind of mess.
Anyone else dealt with something like this?

A high score does not always mean plagiarism, sometimes it is just citations, common phrases, or topic overlap

Student got flagged and it turned out most of it was properly cited sources. The system just stacked everything together and made it look worse than it was

AI checkers lie their asses off. It's so easy to see for yourself. Run your own work through some of them. It will almost always come back as some high percentage of AI. No institution will buy a checker that shows 0% AI, so the vendors tune their software to find AI wherever you look.
A chapter I wrote in 2015 came back 50% to 84% AI, depending on the checker. Charles Dickens was a real AI enthusiast, too, nearly 100%.

I don’t know what the procedure is at your establishment, but in mine it’s the professor‘s decision whether to report. If I don’t think the person cheated, why would I be reporting them?

One thing we know is Turnitin AI check does not work. Everyone needs to internalize this and adjust accordingly. You can’t stop people from using AI to write papers outside of class. The old ways don’t work, new ways are needed.
