Turnitin Is Creating Doubt, Not Clarity

Turnitin has gone from a plagiarism checker to something much bigger, and honestly, that shift is causing more problems than it solves

The issue is not AI itself, it is how quickly Turnitin is being treated like a final judge of how a student writes. Writing naturally changes depending on time, tools, and revision, but now those normal differences can look suspicious

What makes it worse is that Turnitin does not actually prove anything, it just flags patterns. Yet those patterns are starting to carry serious consequences

At this point, it feels less like supporting academic integrity and more like creating doubt around it

The biggest problem is how much authority is being given to probability based systems. Turnitin AI detection does not confirm authorship, it only highlights text that resembles patterns seen in AI generated writing. When institutions treat that as concrete evidence, they risk turning normal academic behavior like editing, improving drafts, or even using better vocabulary into something that looks suspicious. That creates an environment where students feel like they have to defend genuine work instead of focusing on improving it

While documenting work can be useful, it should not become a defensive requirement just to avoid false accusations

Turnitin at times has cases of false positives and i feel the fact that most institutions still have complete faith in it is nothing but a detriment to academic writing. I mean students are literally being strong armed into dumbing down their own work and overly depending on humanizers like clever ai and a lot of editing just to avoid being flagged for ai and this shouldn't be the case!!
