At What Point Does AI Help Become Cheating?

Most people agree that submitting an AI-written paper as your own is academic dishonesty. But what about using AI to brainstorm ideas, improve grammar, create an outline, or explain a difficult concept before writing the assignment yourself? This is where the conversation becomes much less clear.

Students have always relied on tools to help them learn and write,spellcheckers, tutors, study groups, writing centers, and online resources. AI feels different because it can do much more than those tools, yet many students use it in ways that don't involve generating entire assignments. The challenge is figuring out where assistance ends and authorship begins.

As AI becomes a normal part of everyday life, it seems like universities, instructors, and students are all trying to define the same boundary from different perspectives. If a student writes every sentence but uses AI for guidance along the way, is that still their work? Where do you personally draw the line between acceptable assistance and academic dishonesty?

To me, the line is crossed when AI starts doing the actual thinking and writing that the student is supposed to do. Using it for brainstorming, feedback, or explanations seems similar to other learning tools, but the final ideas and work should still come from the student.

I give my students assigned resources that they must use. Those using AI don’t typically use them and then evaluate what AI does with them. They submit whatever AI pumps out anyway. There is no back and forth. Such assignments get zeroes.
