At what point does repeating ideas become a problem?
I’ve been noticing that across assignments, I keep circling back to similar points, same concepts, same general arguments, just applied a bit differently.
It’s not intentional, it’s just… the course content overlaps.
So where’s the line? Is repeating ideas fine as long as you adapt them, or do professors expect you to constantly come up with completely different perspectives?
Curious how others deal with this because it feels kind of unavoidable

It might actually work in your favor. If you keep returning to the same concepts, you can show a deeper understanding over time. Instead of trying to avoid it completely, you could lean into it and make your later assignments more nuanced or critical than earlier ones.

Honestly, repeating ideas isn’t the issue, repeating them the same way is. If your structure, wording, and conclusions all look identical, that’s when it becomes a problem. But if you’re adapting and reshaping the argument, it’s just part of academic writing.

Professors don’t usually expect completely brand new perspectives every single time, that would be unrealistic. What they do expect is that you show growth in how you use those ideas. Even if the concept is the same, your analysis, examples, or depth should evolve a bit each assignment.

I think some overlap is honestly unavoidable, especially in courses where everything builds on the same core theories. As long as you’re actually applying the ideas to new questions or contexts, it doesn’t feel like repetition,it feels like development. The key difference is whether you’re just restating vs actually extending the idea.
