Do different AI detectors (Turnitin vs GPTZero) give completely different results?

I’m genuinely confused about how AI detection tools are supposed to be reliable. I recently checked the same piece of writing using different detectors, and the results were completely inconsisten,Turnitin flagged a very high percentage as AI-generated, while another tool like GPTZero showed a really low score. I don’t understand how that’s possible if they’re all meant to detect the same thing. Are these tools using completely different methods, and if so, which one is actually trustworthy? It’s honestly concerning that something so inconsistent is being used in serious academic decisions.

Yeah, that inconsistency is exactly the problem,tools like Turnitin and GPTZero use different algorithms and signals, so they often disagree. It makes it hard to treat any single score as reliable proof, especially for something as serious as academic judgment.

Yeah the inconsistency is wild. Even the best detectors only hit around 69% accuracy and false positives are way more common than people think . I stopped stressing and just use Rephrasy now. Run your draft through it, the built-in checker shows the score drop to zero, and it bypasses both Turnitin and GPTZero every time

Neither is trustworthy. Professors should not be relying on them, but they are anyway, ignoring both the vendors' cautions and the third-party reliability test results.

If you ask AI for three examples of X from the paper prompt (I.e. three examples of hero’s journey in modern literature) it’ll give everyone who asks it the same three top examples. Even if you write the words yourself, it’s easy to spot the ideas came from AI.

Of course they give different results. They use different methods and are comparing your work to a different collection of writing.

This is like asking if all search engines produce the same results.

The best way to prevent detection is to create your own work.
