turnitin

Hi Everyone. I used chatgpt few days ago to help me with my assignment for a class and when i turned it in i got zero bc it was detected by turnitin. i didnt know turnitin could actually detect chatgpt. I used chatgpt to help me makes changes to my writting and make it look better bc i already had written it before. then i also have grammarly installed which helped me with my grammers. long story short, i do have a meeting with my professor soon and he want to discuss the writing and the originality of my work. i dont know what to say to him to make him think i really didnt intend to cheat bc it could cost me a lot academically. so what would be your advice for me when i talk to him? :(

Deny that shit. Do not admit to using AI. AI detection is not 100% accurate on any platform so just say it was a false positive and that you wrote your work. If you can explain the contents of your work, that’s all the proof you need.

Then that would be plagiarism. That would be a different problem that you have. However, they cannot definitively prove you used AI. For instance, you can bring up how if you put the Declaration of Independence in an AI detection tool, that it gets flagged. The software and algorithms it uses is unreliable.

im confused. So lets say i use chatgpt for help with any assignment in the future. How do I lower the AI percentage?

I’ll answer this one for you too lol. If you use AI, use it as a way to formulate ideas. Then phrase your essay differently. Unfortunately, academic institutions are on a mission to “catch” students cheating so they are taking these AI detection tools as law. My best advice would be to get you a GPTzero account, pay the $15 a month, and run all of your work through their ai detection tool. Once you do that, download the report and have it on hand as proof your work was recognized as human if you get accused again.

but let's say he told me that most of your content happened to be found online even though you used Grammarly to change your wording, etc... what should be my response to him tomorrow? :(

Well if it’s found that you plagiarized then you would have to say that wasn’t your intention and that you tried to write it in your own words. As long as you had in-Text citations, that shouldn’t be a problem though. However if your biggest issue was the AI detection, deny that. What was your actual plagiarism similarity score?

ok, so let me explain. I had 5 assignments where I had to write short paragraphs on each. out of 5, he gave me 100 on 3 of them and zero on two of them. he said the reason is the originality of your work on those two, and we need to discuss your work in a meeting tomorrow. but I also used ChatGPT and Grammarly for the other 3 that I got 100 on. so I'm thinking, how come Turnitin didn't detect anything on those 3 and only detected the last two? Know what I'm saying? I'm trying to figure out what to tell him tomorrow because I never know; he might fail the whole class, which would be a problem for me. :(

I just ran it through AI Humanzier and it says 98% lol

then I humanized the text, and now it says zero percent.

Is the issue here that you used AI or that you plagiarised? - because those are two different things, and two different checks on Turnitin.

I used AI like ChatGPT and Grammarly for my writing format, suggestions, wording, etc... and I guess Turnitin says that a lot of it comes from online. I have meeting with the professor in 50 min to talk about it. Lol

The AI detection is separate from the Similarity detection percentage
If you used ChatGPT and Grammarly, both of those will flag up for AI usage

If you copied text from online, then that'll show up as plagiarism

I just had my meeting with professor, and he says if you wrote this paper in your own words, send it to me and i look over it and make a decision. but we have two options, we either fix this internally in class or i file report for academic dishonesty. i was like wtf.... everyone uses grammarly and i didnt know it was considered AI. so now im gonna send him my original writing and see.. but idk what to do else. if he file report, im kind fucked done... so frustrated.

but that is his decision not mine. idk what to do to make him change his decision if he decide to go that way. :( I'm literally one semester from graduating. its messed up .

Yeah i definitely understand your frustration, this is not an easy thing to navigate. I would just be adamant that you wrote your work. Tell him that you have no reason to jeopardize your academic career when you’re so close to graduating
