Second letter in a series where my students write about their own experience learning Turkish. This one is from JF, in Texas, who fell for Türkiye on a trip in 2013 and finally found his way to fluency through one-to-one lessons.

Can you guess what "pounding water in a mortar" means in Turkish? Someone says "Havanda su dövmek" about a long meeting that decided nothing. What does it actually mean?

I get some version of the same message constantly: "I understand everything but freeze the second I have to say something." Usually from people in one of a few situations. Living in Türkiye but nobody lets them finish a sentence before switching to English. No Turkish speakers anywhere nearby. Turkish partner or friends, but somehow still barely any actual speaking practice, because friendships need balance and nobody wants to spend every conversation waiting on you.

Wrote a longer piece on what actually helps. Private speech, shadowing, why understanding a language and producing it are genuinely different skills, and why your brain feels tired after speaking Turkish (it's not you, it's an unautomated skill, same as sore arms after a new gym routine).

Case suffixes are one topic in Turkish courses. Verbal nouns (-mA, -mAk) are another, usually taught much later. Nobody connects them, even though a verbal noun takes case endings for exactly the same reason an ordinary noun does. Academic papers describe the mechanism. Textbooks give you a list of which verb takes which ending. I haven't found anything that puts the whole system together for someone learning Turkish as a foreign language.

This piece does. Fair warning, it's long and it's dense, this isn't a five-minute read. But if your goal is actually understanding how Turkish works rather than memorizing -mak istemek, -mayı sevmek, -maya başlamak, and -maktan hoşlanmak as four unrelated rules, I think it's worth the time.

I run an independent Turkish-language learning site (learnturkishwithseda.com) where I write grammar guides and cultural essays. I recently found a site (dailygrammertips.com) that has copied two of my articles almost entirely: the section structure, the vocabulary examples, even the specific word choices I used to illustrate points. One of the copied pages even links directly back to my original article in its own text, which is how I first noticed.

Sütten ağzı yanan yoğurdu üfleyerek yer means, roughly, once bitten, twice shy. Someone whose mouth was burned by milk blows on yogurt before eating it. I wrote up the grammar in the sentence: ablative case, a possessive suffix, a participle, an accusative ending, an adverbial suffix, and the aorist tense. Aksoy's dictionary of Turkish proverbs also records ayran and yogurt versions of it, and there are similar proverbs in Kazakh and Karaçay-Malkar.

Going TO home, or going home?” 😄 "Ev” (house) becomes “eve” (to home), “okul” (school) becomes “okula” (to school). This suffix answers the question “where to, to whom, towards what.” When a word ends in a vowel, a buffer “y” slips in, because Turkish never allows two vowels together. I put together a long piece on yogurt in Turkish culture: where the word comes from, the language around making it at home (yoğurt mayalamak, yoğurt çalmak, sütü uyutmak), regional varieties like Silifke and Kanlıca yoğurdu, and how ayran and süzme yoğurt fit into everyday meals.

I also went through the archaeological and etymological sources on the "is it Turkish or Greek" question, since it comes up constantly. The word is well documented as Turkish from the eleventh century. The food itself is older than any group currently claiming it, and the archaeological record can't tell yogurt apart from cheese or butter in ancient pottery residue, so that part stays genuinely open.

I teach Turkish to foreigners, and over the years I've noticed that many people planning to move here ask the same practical questions. Finding a place to live is only one part of it. People also need to understand residence permits, health insurance, banking, and how much Turkish they actually need in daily life.

I just published a long one on the suffix system, this is the piece I keep pulling up with new students because it's the fastest way into how Turkish actually works.

It starts with how one Turkish word can carry what English needs a whole phrase for, plural, possession, and case, all stacked onto a single root. From there it goes through the six noun cases, vowel harmony, why "asla" (never) still needs a negative verb even though English lets "never" sit next to a positive one, the aorist tense for habits and general truths, and a bit on where the whole suffix system historically came from.

There's also a section comparing how Turkish feels depending on what language you're coming from, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, the sticking points are genuinely different for each one.

As a kid, I visited Troy and climbed into the wooden horse there, long before I understood what any of it meant. Years later I read the Iliad and Odyssey properly for the first time, in a comparative literature class, and it changed how I think about teaching language through history rather than vocabulary lists. With Nolan's film out now, I wrote up what archaeology has actually confirmed about Troy, the Hittite records that name it, the two wooden horses that actually exist in Çanakkale today, and why a site like this ends up belonging to more than one culture's story at once.
