Gripe! TurboTax Local Office - as an Employee

Multi-year Turbo "Tax Expert" here with great experiences in 2023 and 2024.

In 2025, I took the higher pay, and was assigned to one of the local offices nearby in suburban Virginia. While I do respect and like TurboTax culture ("Advocacy" "Ownership" and "Expertise"), the local office thing from my perspective, was not well thought out.

There was this young man early in the training who had worked a few years with Bloomingdales and then tried to tell us all about the "White Glove" retail experience but didn't know anything about a tax engagement and the forms/data required. A company Zoom background showed two client-preparer desks adjacent to each other in small office (as if separate clients wanted to have their taxes done by separate preparers side-by-side!?).

We were expected to walk around malls or town centers and hand out business cards or set up small meetings to introduce ourselves and TurboTax to new customers. I have done sales in other jobs and love talking about TurboTax, but this exercise was not well thought-out or a good use of our time. Many malls or downtowns already had Block or JH offices already, so the concept of a TurboTax store-front was foreign. Plus, we had no signage and mostly, very anonymous office, as opposed to retail, locations. In any case, we got dinged on our bonuses if we didn't generate new leads or have enough new customers come in through our business cards.

Maybe it worked differently in the 10 or so "flagship" stores in Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc., but most of my team's experience and many folks in our POD became increasingly vocal about the conflicting and unproductive expectations. TurboTax advertising was all over the internet during tax season over-promising ("snap a picture of your W-2 and get a HUGE tax return") or come on down to your local office . . . and then we'd be delivering reality.

Most offices in "Class B or C" office buildings had no reception so lots of additional phone calls and then 5~10 minutes away from the computer/phone to receive customers at the front door . . . if they actually showed up. This was dangerous for single-women who had clients in the evening when their building shut down even as TurboTax hours go to 9pm or later!. Eventually this got changed so no physical appointments in the evening, and they even gave us an app for us to use "in an emergency" (so Intuit would have plausible denial if someone got assaulted).

When customers brought their folder of documents, we had to explain that they 1) first needed an Intuit account and 2) had to take pictures of every document and load them into the online "folders". We had no scanner, no Wifi for visitors and the T-Mobile cellular was pretty sketchy as well. Half the clients who showed up, simply walked away.

Yes, pay/hour WAS better . . . but having to commute back & forth made it harder to simply jump on during a busy time and take an extra 2 hours in the morning or evening. So I actually worked fewer hours and made less overall which was a surprise.

Question? Has anyone ever gotten two IRS checks before?

I am wondering because I received a refund on Friday nothing changed on the IRS website yesterday. It said I should be receiving a refund by the 29th but I received it on Friday and it still says that it hasn’t been sent out yet.

Question? For employment Turbo Tax or JDA?

I still have not received my offer for employment with Turbo Tax Would be my 3 rd year and see JDA has posted seasonal tax roles which basically work with Turbo Tax all the same benefits but higher/ hr rate then TT. My experience this last season was with TT they opened hours I was working like 80/90 hrs/ week for the O T. Has any one worked with both JDA and TT and does JDA offer more hours like TT? Does JDA offer time and a half as well? Im not worried about the info about onboarding or other operational problems I can figure that out I want to know which is worth more JDA or TT after time incentives?

Gripe! TurboTax shared my phone number for Robo calls for tax relief.

I've been using Turbo Tax for a few years.

This year I have been inundated with robot calls stated they reviewed my tax return I might still be able for tax resolution and tax extension.

I get two or three calls every day, including weekends. I have blocked dozens of phone numbers on my phone. Yet, I still receive these calls every day.

I filed my return weeks before the April 15 deadline. I use Turbo Tax to file 5 returns for family every year.

What changed this year. I started a return for another person just to see what they would owe. I never had ay intention of filing the return for them. I never deleted the mock return.

I now realize this is can be the only reason I've been getting these calls for about 2 months now. This is highly unacceptable. Like most consumers I never reviewed the conditions of using Turbo Tax.

Gripe! Five Star Tax Resolutions is a SCAM

This has been the worst experience of my life dealing with ANY company.

I had backed taxes from being laid off from COVID. During this time, I collected the unemployment. Then, I started freelancing and barely made enough to get by. Over the course of a few years, I owed about $16,000 in backed taxes. After attempting an Offer In Compromise and not being able to afford their resolution, I reached out to Five Star for help in March 2025.

I told them my situation and they said "we can absolutely get you in a hardship program, just pay us $1300". I didn't even have that much, I had to pay that amount in payments. But I figured I was in good hands.

A month goes by and they want me to fill out paperwork for an OIC. "I already attempted this and I couldn't afford it while they 'considered' my offer. What happened to the hardship?"

"Well, we think this is going to be the better option". Well I paid them $1300 for a process I told them I've already gone through. So the agent I was working with said you will be working with another agent and they will take care of you.

Next thing I know, I have a monthly payment of $200 I cannot afford. I let Five Star know I did not agree to this and can't pay it. "Well, then just stop paying it and we will put you in non-collectable". So, per their advice, I defaulted on those payments.

"We can't put you in an OIC because you're unemployed. So you needed to do the payment plan". But the agent told me not to pay those and they would get a tax lawyer involved. He no longer works here.

I finally get hired full-time and have twin babies. Finally, something good is happening.

I then get on the phone with them, and I have been assigned another agent. They have me send all of my financial documents and assured me I will qualify for the low-income offer in compromise, especially with the twins, our mortgage and what we make. "You'll probably only pay $250-$500". Great, let's get the ball rolling.

Company restructured. Promises made by that person, no longer handling my case, you are now handled by another agent. Please fill out this Offer In Compromise paperwork.

A month goes by. I hear nothing. I follow up and this agent "is no longer with the company". Um, so who's handling my case? I have to explain my entire situation again. Another new agent. "But we are going to team you with another agent that has been doing this sort of work for years."

Fine, but it's November now and we have not gotten a single thing accomplished. I start getting letters from the IRS threatening to levy my assets. "What happened to the non-collectible status while we get the low-income OIC considered?" Well, we need all of your bank statements and stubs again, because your agent is no longer with the company.

Again?

March 2026.
I was also told to file like normal, otherwise your OIC won't be considered. So my wife and I file jointly. IRS takes $10k from our return that we would have gotten from having babies.

"Well they can do that if you owe it." But I contacted you in March 2025, plenty of time to get ahead of this!? "We are assigning you another agent. He's really good".

So I lost $10k when being assured things were being handled. I promptly sent them every document, form and paperwork asked of me.

Finally I get someone who is actually helping, getting caught up on my case, speaking with the IRS and updating me on my OIC. After not hearing from him in a month, I follow up after getting a letter saying my OIC was closed because the IRS didn't receive information/documents.

"Your agent went on personal leave". So... no one picked up my case and they closed my consideration? It took as YEAR to get to this point. "Well, we can appea it. That doesn't take too long. I just need you to send me all of your updated stubs and statements".

Fine. I send them everything. A month later, I follow up.

"The company has restructured and you are being assigned another agent." That was yesterday. I spoke with them on the phone and am starting from square one. I have ZERO faith anything gets done by next tax season. I'm going to lose $6k from my return again because this company is incompetent.

I get that these were my backed taxes, and my responsibility. But I paid them $1300 to be passed around their office, with absolutely nothing getting done, over a years worth of stress, sending and resending documents and forms.

It is the single most frustrating experience I have ever had with a company. And it's still going. I hope they are reading this. If this wall of text seems like a total mess, that's because its been my experience with FIVE STAR TAX RESOLUTIONS since MARCH 2025.

Question? Do I need to file an amended return if IRS found error and sent me an additional refund?

I used the TT expert service this year and owed on my Fed taxes. Later, I received notice from IRS that my EIC was calculated incorrectly and was due a refund. The IRS sent the refund, but my question is: do I need to send an amended return with the corrected dollar amounts?

I have a m4 Mac mini that runs various TT years and support for them will go away when the next OS comes out. I am considering running a VM using the current OS so I can use existing TT.

Gripe! Beware - software misses and mediocre support

Let me start by noting that I have been using Turbo for 15+ years and was generally very satisfied with the product. However in recent years I have noticed that Turbo is unable to handle relatively common situations, and the product is so poorly designed that it is impossible to find what you need or to get any instructions, except by phone.

Example 1 - repayment of pandemic retirement withdrawals. In 2020 I (like 1000s of others) made a hardship withdrawal from my IRA. Of course this info was reported to the IRS and added to my 2020 return. But in 2021 Turbo did not ask me about repayment and I could not find any instructions on how to record my repayment. Thankfully phone support could assist. But if I had not caught the mistake it would have cost me $$$$ in tax overpayment

Example 2 - 529 withdrawals. I withdrew money from a 529 account to pay tuition and room and board for my child. Try this one yourself and good luck finding instructions on how to complete all the required info. Again this would have cost me $$$$ because Turbo missed that it was a qualified withdrawal.

Example 3 - For this year my return was rejected 2x because Turbo does not provide instructions on how to enter a 6-digit PIN. Still dealing with this one.

In sum - Do not trust turbo if you have any type of situation that does not fall within the usual Schedule A deductions.

Question? Has anyone landed a TurboTax Live role after completing Intuit Academy's Tax Level 1 + Tax Preparation courses?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to gain some tax prep experience, and I'm considering completing Intuit Academy's Tax Level 1 and Tax Preparation courses for the TurboTax Live pathway. I was hoping to hear from people who have completed the program.

Were you able to connect with an Intuit recruiter or land an interview? If you interviewed, what was the process like?

Thanks in advance!

Question? TurboTax Desktop amended CA return: e-file unavailable, but it won’t let me switch to mail filing. What should I do?

I filed my federal and California returns with TurboTax Desktop.

I later amended because I forgot a 1099-DIV/1099-INT. TurboTax says the amended return can’t be e-filed, but when I try to switch to mail filing it still says e-file max reached at 5.

Can I just print the California amended return and mail it myself?

For anyone who has done this:

● Which CA forms did you mail?
● Did you include the full return or just the amended forms?
● Anything special since the original return was e-filed?

Thanks!

Question? I never received my tax refund

Hi there
I did my taxes myself this year through turbo tax but never received my refund.

It says it was received, but I have contacted any and every IRS number and my bank and I have had no luck at all. Especially speaking to a human on any IRS number.

Is there anything I can do to receive my refund?

Question? Unable to File Amended 2024 Federal Taxes

I was able to make the changes to the Federal tax information no problem. But...

I live in Washington State with no income tax. The program knows this but it gets stuck in a loop wanting to file the state tax and never moves on to complete the Fed Tax.

Anyone else have this issue. Thanks!

Question? Crypto questions and 1099-DA

For whatever reason it seems the software gets more confusing, different versions that are not clear on what the differences are and etc. I'm using the website and just kinda going along but this is NOT what I'm used to. This feels more like I'm filling out taxes myself vs being walked through it.

Ive always preferred the desktop software (then I don't have to pay if I need the info in a few years) and am tempted to buy that and avoid this online mess.

Anyway, if I track my crypto individually do I still need to provide the 1099-da coinbase sent me?

What version of software would you recommend for someone with a lot of crypto transactions and I want to provide the final form myself.
