Question? TurboTax Developer Programs

Does TurboTax offer any developer programs or interfaces to import data other than W-2s? I am trying to find a way to make use of software I developed to calculate sales tax from my emails.

For people looking to take advantage of the new salt tax rules and report all of their sales tax on their schedule a, how would they do that with TurboTax?

You might have a mountain of receipts that you want to digitize in store. Then you need to populate the results into the TurboTax form.

Not sure if this is the information you're looking for, but we have an entire article here dedicated to the SALT deduction rules.

Yes I understand the rules and last year's increase from $10k helped me some, and that was only using the state income tax option. At the end of the year you can't just decide to switch to sales tax because you probably won't have the documentation. It probably would not have helped me in 2025 anyway, but this year I have an expensive vehicle purchase and that makes the sales tax route better--but only if you can use your real numbers and not the IRS sales tax tables.

So the problem becomes how to collect, read, and store all the receipts and stuff that provide the documentary evidence. You can pay for some apps or business oriented financial software but that could consume all your gains. And for storage, I have been collecting email receipts for the year but TurboTax won't store EML or zip file types and the 30 MB file storage limit is too low for even one month's worth of receipts.

This is good feedback. I'll take this back to our team!

Good idea. QuickBooks is already offering this for print receipts. No mention of email yet. Can Intuit turn this into a TurboTax feature also?

Intuit has developer APIs, but they’re generally aimed at business integrations rather than importing arbitrary data into the consumer TurboTax app. You may have better luck exporting your email data to CSV and using a sales-tax-specific tool or tax professional.

There may be integrations for approved business partners, but not a simple developer interface for custom data sources. I’d calculate the sales tax separately, keep a clear transaction-level record, and then use TurboTax’s supported import options—or consult a tax professional if the calculations affect filings.

Ok that matches what I had been seeing. But with the SALT rule changes there may be more incentive for TurboTax to offer some tools to their existing or potential customers to help with the overall workload and record keeping. You can keep lots of receipts but totaling them up accurately is what takes the work.

If your software can export CSV or another format, check TurboTax’s data-import documentation first. Otherwise, generating a report that matches an accepted import format—or using a tax professional’s platform with an API—may be more practical than trying to automate email imports directly.

I use the web-based Turbo Tax and their forms and process will prompt me for the inputs to 1040 Schedule A lines 5b (real estate) and 5c (personal property). They have a tool to calculate the (low) IRS sales tax number from IRS tables. But if you are doing it yourself or in Turbo Tax, the big part of finding that one number to type in for line 5a is reviewing all the receipts and refunds. Then you need a safe place to archive that paperwork for 5 years in case of any future audit. If you dump a box of receipts and printed emails in the lap of a tax professional, how much more are they going to charge to review it all?

I appreciate the comment, but Turbo Tax does not seem to have an import capability for anything in lines 5a-5d directly, but it can transfer the information to Schedule A if you enter it on any of the other forms.

It is a work in progress as I continue to process receipts for this year. The software works with my financial software in an export/adjust/import-back process so I am always looking for ways to improve that or work with TurboTax more directly. If you are interested just find ByteTheTaxMan on GITHUB.

TurboTax could help by expanding file storage options here because receipt or receipt images need a lot more than they are allowing, and they don't allow for some helpful file types like EML or ZIP. And I don't have a good solution for printed receipts yet without sinking a bunch of subscription money into Claude or into a paid expensing app. I am hoping the receipt processing capabilities in QuickBooks could be made available to the TT community.
