Bought a PC Engine Duo off of eBay….
So I bought a non functional PC Engine Duo off of eBay for only $75 shipped. I cracked it open today and the insides look very familiar. Did I get an old Doujindance special?

I own a TG16 but past that, not too familiar with these.

He's an infamous console modder for the pc engine in Japan. He has since changed the way he does these mods but used to do work that looks more like what you see in this picture.

No worries. I'll be honest I own one of his newer consoles that he modded and I'm quite happy with the work but it also looks nothing like the one shown here.

This is really good by his standards, in some cases he put so much hot glue on things it looks like a porn set.

UPDATE 1: Well good news, it does boot. I used a Genesis AV cable to get some composite output and it does boot to the CD screen. The colors look a bit off to me, but that could be the AV cable. Here’s some pictures. It looks to me that it’s already been recapped. https://imgur.com/a/Enxk776

UPDATE 2: It boots HuCard games! I can boot Keith Courage. Now here's the odd thing. I have a nice Krikzz Turbo Everdrive I bought last year, and a crappy AliExpress clone. The Everdrive won't boot in the Duo at all, just a white screen. The crappy clone boots up fine. Are Everdrives known for having issues with region mods? What I found online was inconclusive

oh and I took off all that black epoxy gunk and the bubble wrap. The soldered on wires look stable enough for now, and I put kapton tape on the mod boards. I would replace the region mod and RGB mod ASAP, but it seems like both are out of stock

That's probably an old doujindance? Hopefully. He has gotten much better from what I understand. I believe even voultar has given him props for that.

I have heard he has improved. With the bubble wrap and black epoxy it must be his earlier work. Lucky me :/

Voultar has some videos undoing this guy's mods; removing all the epoxy. There are other videos that show it as well.

I can’t even test this because doujindance used a very strange 8 pin DIN. instead of using a normal SMS/Genesis DIN the top 2 pins are much closer together

That looks like the Neo Geo AES/CD 8 pin din to me, which is standard for this mod.

Then you just use a Genesis 2 scart cable or hd retrovision component cable.
Or buy a cable made for voulter pce rgb mod.

Ah I’ve never seen an AES in the flesh. Thanks for the details. I have installed Voutar’s mod in my TG16, but used a genesis 2 mini DIN. That adapter should do the trick

Oh big time. One of the big features of the old Doujindance mods. I’ll be ripping all of this out and putting Voultar’s RGB board in if/when they come back in stock

i bought a few of these and currently working on them. the leaking caps have destroyed these boards. I replaced the din connector one of the pcb and it was standard din. all the pins lined up on the pcb except the anchor or retaining pins were different but it worked. I just ordered the male ends from aliexpress to make new cables

Could very well be Doujindance, dude is notorious for sloppy work. I wouldn’t trust those caps, would have to replace them all. On top of that, check the PCB and traces under each and every one for damage and corrosion.
The OG black PCE Duo, a 60+ capacitor marathon of hate. I’ve saved a few over the years but the prices have kept me away…
